Do Your HomeworkHave you ever been in a conversation that seems to revolve entirely around the other person? Try as you might, somehow the “gravity” of every story seems to pull towards the other party. When I am in these types of conversations I struggle to feel any connection. It’s as if I’m a spectator and the conversation will go on with or without my participation.

When you are trying to build a relationship, the most obvious way to avoid making the other party feel this way is to ask questions – lots of them. After all, not only do you learn about their situation, you also make them the most important participant in the conversation. But there is another way to ensure that they feel valuable: do some homework before you meet with them.

Customers are impressed when they see that you’ve put in the work to learn about them before your meeting. They love the fact that your questions are insightful. When you are

informed, your conversation can move on to important details much

faster, skipping past the preliminary

fact-finding. Not only are you showing them how much you value their business, you are saving them time, and that always makes a big impression.

Obviously, this is especially effective in new partnerships, but don’t slack off with your longtime relationships. There is always something new to learn, and the more important you make people feel, the more productive your conversations will become.
