WHILE VISITING DCB YOU CAN:

TWO DCB EMPLOYEES SIT SIDE BY SIDE. One points to a Bachelor’s degree hanging on the office wall and says, “I have that exact same diploma.” She walks out and comes back with the same Bachelor’s degree issued from the same N.D. four-year university. Both have the same look and feel to them. Both have the same “Bachelor’s” degree title. Both have the same Cum Laude Honors distinction on their diploma.

Employee A went straight to a four-year N.D. university and studied there for five years, with one semester abroad. She changed her major three times and worked full time in college to “keep costs down.” After college, she graduated with $70,000 in student loan debt to land her a $28,000 job fresh out of college. For the next 30 years, employee A will pay a minimum of $400 per month to pay off her student loan debt.

The other DCB employee studied two years at a two-year N.D. college and transferred into a four-year N.D. university to graduate. She also worked full time to keep student loans down and studied hard to make sure she finished in four years. Employee B’s student loans were only $30,000 and for the next 15 years she will pay $100 per month in student loan debt.

Now, let’s add a third employee to the mix for reference. Employee C studied two years at a two-year N.D. college and played sports on a scholarship. He later transferred to a different four-year N.D. university. He studied a total of five years, changed majors and worked part time. Employee C had saved money during school and paid for one semester of college on his own. After graduation, he left with $20,000 in student loan debt and will pay $250 per month for the next seven years.

THESE ARE THE TRUE STUDENT LOAN STORIES OF THREE DCB EMPLOYEES. After reading their stories, who do you think made the smarter choice? Which route are you going to choose? These are serious matters to consider when entering into higher education and future students need to be thinking about the end result before they make costly decisions.

With the economy we live in today, students have to consider ways to save on their education. At DCB, we are among the lowest tuition rates in the state of North Dakota, which is a big way to save. Students can attend DCB for the first two years of their four-year degree, cutting their cost of education down in a significant way.

FINANCIALLY DCB MAKES SENSE

BE A PERSON, NOT JUST A NUMBER

Students can receive their first two years of their four-year degree at DCB. Students can take general education courses at DCB and the best part is, all these courses will transfer to other N.D. universities.

DCB athletes know that they are stepping up their game by playing during their freshman and sophomore year instead of sitting on the bench. By working hard on the field/court and in the classroom, many DCB athletes often continue playing at four-year universities.

Two-year schools have a bad stereotype for being a place to go if you can’t hack it at a four-year school. This is not true! DCB will challenge you! With the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and an Honors Program, there are plenty of ways to push yourself to the limit while taking in the benefits of studying at a two-year school.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF LEARNING ON A SMALLER CAMPUS? I absolutely love having the ability to be on a personal level with my professors. It helps me feel more confident to ask for help.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ATTEND A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE VERSUS A FOUR-YEAR? At first, I was going to get my generals completed. Later, I found that DCB offered a great nursing program and it made more sense to get my schooling done quicker.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST PART ABOUT DCB? The best part about DCB is knowing everyone on campus and being able to develop friendships with everyone.

WHAT IS DCB'S “BEST-KEPT-SECRET” THAT NO ONE EVER TOLD YOU ABOUT AND THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE? There is a sauna!!

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SMALL CLASSROOM SIZES?I love the small classes. It helps me learn at my own pace to fully understand the material.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT ABOUT DCB? A two-year college is a great place to meet all different types of people, to build relationships, and to prepare for a four-year college.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF PLAYING A SPORT FOR DCB? My teammates are the best! Win or lose, we are friends on and off of the court.

MEDICAL ASSISTANTSMedical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, optometrists and other healthcare providers running smoothly. These allied health personnel are trained to perform administrative duties or to work directly with a physician.

Medical Assistants often directly assist the physician by preparing patients for exams, taking vital signs, obtaining medical histories, explaining treatment procedures, performing basic laboratory tests and setting up instrument trays.

ALLIEDHEALTHDakota College offers a three-tier nursing program. Students begin by enrolling in the pre-nursing curriculum. During this time, they must meet grade point average standards, hold a current Certified Nursing Assistant certification and complete an application to be admitted into the practical nursing program. Once accepted, they may begin the 11-month PN program, taking a state exam to become a licensed practical nurse afterward. After completing the PN program and meeting qualifications, students may be permitted to continue for another year of training by applying to the Associate Degree Nursing program. Once a student graduates from the ADN program, they can take a state exam to earn their title as a Registered Nurse.

PRACTICAL NURSES (PN'S) Students who complete the Practical Nursing program take the state board exam to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's). LPN's care for the sick, injured, convalescent and disabled under the direction of a physician and registered nurse. These nurses see to the basic care of patients, taking vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, monitoring patients and making sure they are comfortable. In doctors’ offices and clinics they also may make appointments, keep records and perform other clerical duties.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSES (ADN'S) Associate Degree Nurses take the state board exams to become Registered Nurses (RN's). RN's work to promote health, prevent diseases and cope with illness. They are advocates and educators for patients, families and communities. When providing direct patient care, they observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress in patients. They assist physicians during surgeries, treatments and examinations. RN's also develop and manage nursing care plans, instruct patients and their families in proper care and help individuals take steps to improve their health.

PARAMEDIC (EMT) TECHNOLOGYPeople's lives often depend on the quick and vital services provided by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics. In emergencies, Paramedics are dispatched by 911 operators to the scene of an accident or other situations in which immediate medical services are required. Paramedics provide more extensive pre-hospital care than EMTs. In addition to carrying out basic EMT procedures, Paramedics can administer medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKG's), perform endotracheal intubations and use monitors and other complex equipment.

Students must successfully complete their EMT-Basic certification before enrolling into DCB’s Paramedic (EMT) Technology program. After completion of the Paramedic (EMT) Technology program, students can take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) written and practical examination to become a certified Paramedic.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYInformation Technology (IT) is the study of how computers process and manage information. An AAS in Information Technology prepares you for entry-level positions as a help desk operator or computer user. IT professionals work in a variety of industries, designing hardware, software, communications networks, Internet applications and more.

New students, or working professionals, can benefit from the program by staying current with evolving trends in technology. Currently in North Dakota, the demand for two-year IT degrees is high.

Students seeking a four-year degree in IT can enroll in the 3+1 collaborative program between Valley City State University and DCB. Through this program, students can study at DCB for three years and finish their final year at Valley City.

LABORATORY & FIELD TECHNICIANSEnvironmental technician jobs are more practically oriented than those of scientists. Technicians perform laboratory and field tests to monitor environmental resources and determine the contaminants and sources of pollution in an ecosystem. Some are responsible for waste management operations, control and management of hazardous materials inventory or regulatory compliance.

Employment of environmental science and protection technicians is expected to grow much faster than average according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most of this growth is expected to be in firms that assist other companies in environmental monitoring, management and regulatory compliance.

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENTThe nation’s natural resources provide a variety of benefits ranging from recreational to commercial use. Managing, improving and protecting natural resources for economic and recreational purposes require many different tasks. Workers in this field assist in developing, maintaining and conserving the resources by growing and planting new seedlings, fighting insects and diseases, controlling soil erosion and managing water resources.

Workers develop and maintain relationships with local, state and federal governments and advise farmers and ranchers on conservation plans, watershed protection and soil preservation. Management professionals need to be able to apply principles of agronomy, soil science, forestry and agriculture to achieve their conservation goals. Demand for conservation workers will increase as more land is set aside to protect natural resources or wildlife habitats.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TRANSFER PROGRAMDCB’s Wildlife Management Transfer Program prepares students for a four-year Bachelor’s degree. This program prepares students for higher-level employment opportunities, and students often continue on to become officers specializing in fishing, hunting and boating laws. Game wardens patrol hunting and fishing areas, conduct search and rescue operations, investigate complaints and accidents and aid in prosecuting court cases. These individuals must also meet specific requirements. While most states require at least two years of college studies, a competitive job market favors those with a Bachelor’s degree. Once hired, fish and game wardens attend a training academy lasting from three to 12 months, sometimes followed by further training in the field.

A collaborative program (3+1) between DCB and Valley City State University (VCSU) provides DCB students with the opportunity to remain on the DCB campus for a third year. During the third year, students enroll in VCSU wildlife courses in pursuit of a four-year wildlife management degree from VCSU. Students then transfer to the VCSU campus to complete their fourth year of study. For other university transfer options, check out our Featured Transfer Programs on page 18.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF LEARNING ON A SMALLER CAMPUS? I really appreciate the fact the professors here take the time to get to know you, not only as a student, but also as a person. The classes are very good and the smaller class size helps you stay motivated.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ATTEND A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE VERSUS A FOUR-YEAR? It is a lot cheaper, but it also gives me the time to improve as a student and to learn more about myself and what I may want to pursue as my career.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST PART ABOUT DCB? The fact everyone here is so friendly and supportive. After you spend time here you become thankful for the memories you make and the friendships that have developed.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SMALL CLASSROOM SIZES? Love them because the teachers actually know who I am and I don’t feel like a number.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT ABOUT DCB? DCB has a lot of opportunities for students and to take advantage of them. The teachers are very bright and professional.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE GAME/CROWD AT THE ATHLETIC EVENTS? The whole town supports Jacks athletics. The games are a great environment to have fun with your friends.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF PLAYING A SPORT FOR DCB? The support from the whole school (student body, faculty, staff). All the sport teams here encourage each other to succeed no matter what sport you play.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF LIVING IN THE DORMS? It gives you the feeling that you are a part of the “college experience.” It’s also very convenient. All of my buddies live in the same dorm so we always hang out and have a good time.
