2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS

GENERAL MANAGER’S UPDATE2013 WORLD SCHOOL MILK DAY

World School Milk Day is an annual international event that celebrates the importance of milk in children’s diets and the dairy farm families who work hard to provide this nutrient-rich beverage.

On your mark, get set, ready, clear the way!

Schools across the Southeast are opening their doors to thousands of active, energetic and hungry students. Beginning this year, SUDIA will kick-off its pilot Fuel Up First with Breakfast Challenge in both Georgia and North Carolina with plans to span the Southeast. Fuel Up First challenges school districts to increase breakfast participation by at least 20 percent during the upcoming school year. Fuel Up First will take place

September through November and involve all public, charter and private school districts that are currently participating in the National School Breakfast Program.

“The purpose of World School Milk Day is to educate students about milk and its nutritional values, as well as how it’s produced,” said Molly Szymanski, director of school programs at SUDIA. “Most children are so far removed from farm life. This is a great way for them

to be able to see real cows, meet a real

dairy farmer and under-stand where their milk really comes from and who produces

it.” Participating

dairy farmers will visit local schools,

conduct media interviews and speak to students and families about the impor-tance of milk and its unmatched nutri-tional value. The potential to gain media recognition in video newscasts and newspapers in their respected commu-nities is tremendous. “When dairy farmers participate in events like these, it peaks the interest and curiosity of the students,” said Szymanski. “They ask those hard-hitting questions, which provide a great opportunity for us to educate them about the importance of drinking milk and eating dairy products for strong bones and healthy teeth.” To participate in WSMD events in your area, contact Amanda Trice at [email protected] or 1-800-343-4693.

“We know that kids don’t learn quite as well when they’re hungry,” said Cindy Culver, registered dietitian and direc-tor of school nutrition for Marietta City Schools in Marietta, Ga. “When students are hungry, they’re focusing on hunger pains. Making sure those students are eating breakfast when they arrive at school is critical; they can focus on what they came here to do, get an education.” Research has shown that breakfast helps combat childhood obesity and encourages healthy eating. In fact, children who don’t eat breakfast miss 25 percent of their daily nutrition. SUDIA’s Dairy Everywhere program continues to increase dairy consumption and sales in schools. For every breakfast sold, a carton of milk is offered. For more information, contact Molly Szymanski at [email protected] or 1-800-343-4693.

Fuel Up to Play 60 event gives student ambassadors the

materials needed to propel dairy in Southeast schools

Football is back! SUDIA, Dairy Management, Inc., and the Carolina

Panthers made a statement during the Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP 60) Leader-ship Summit held in Charlotte, N.C. this past July that exercise, eating well and healthy children are here to stay. The FUTP 60 Leadership Summit brought together dairy farmers, 67 student ambassador leaders and 50 program advisors who are committed to improving their schools and surround-ing community by encouraging others to eat smart and remain active through the dairy checkoff’s FUTP 60 program. Southeast dairy farmers were repre-sented by North Carolina dairy farm-ers Eugene Blackwell and Zach Myers. They spoke to attendees about the importance of programs like FUTP 60, the consumption of healthy foods that include dairy and also encouraged the ambassadors to find their passion in life and drive change through the FUTP 60 program. “The Fuel Up to Play 60 Summit was an amazing experience and the kids were very active,” said North Carolina dairy farmer Eugene Blackwell. “Dairy farmers should be proud to know they’re part of this great program. It promotes healthy kids and we farmers play a ma-jor role in that by producing one of the

most nutritious products, milk.” For more information about the FUTP 60 program, contact Molly Szymanski at [email protected] or 1-800-343-4693.

Taco Bell, the largest Mexican quick-serve

restaurant chain in the nation, recently launched the first of several new dairy-friendly menu items. The Cantina Double Steak Quesadilla features real pepper jack cheese and is the brand’s first offering of the Cantina Bell “chef inspired” menu to feature cheese and sour cream for dipping. “Taco Bell has seen the success that competitors like McDonalds have had by partnering with dairy farmers and the most recent result of this partner-ship is a new quesadilla menu contain-ing plenty of cheese,” said Zach Myers, North Carolina dairy farmer, National Dairy Board and SUDIA board mem-ber. “I am excited about the possibility of selling incremental pounds of milk

through these new menu items and other potential dairy-friendly creations in the future.” The dairy checkoff and Taco Bell formed a partnership in 2012 that includes a dairy scientist, employed by the dairy checkoff. Together they grow dairy sales by helping develop entrees, desserts, beverages and breakfast items that incorporate dairy ingredients. The Cantina Double Steak Quesadilla launched in late June and is now avail-able at Taco Bells across the Southeast.

A study sponsored by the dairy producer-created Dairy Research

Institute shows that whey protein is more effective than soy protein in developing lean muscle. The study is one of several that helps identify the connection between dairy proteins and lean muscle mass.

Research findings support the value of resistance training and whey protein supplements to build lean muscle in young adults. Whey protein is a high-quality dairy protein that plays a signifi-cant role in muscle maintenance

and repair. “Many athletes depend on whey protein to enhance exercise recovery,” said Mary Martin Nordness, SUDIA’s

director of nutrition affairs. “This emerging research suggests consum-ing whey protein during and/or after exercise may improve an athlete’s strength and help fatigued muscles recover quicker, but more research is needed.” The results of the study were pre-sented during the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting. SUDIA staff will be continuing to get the message out to health profession-als on the benefits of whey protein for
