We can look back on a very positive year 2011.We were able to sell considerably more trucks than in the previous year, with all of our business units contributing to this positive development. The indications are good that our truck business will continue to grow, as demonstrated by the incoming orders we are receiving from around the world.
Daimler Trucks consistently expanded and modernized its pro- duct range in all market regions in 2011. Among other things, Mercedes-Benz added another chapter to the Actros success story by creating an all-new model of its flagship truck. The new heavy-duty truck instantly became the benchmark at its introduction on the European market. Meanwhile, the Freightliner and Western Star brands presented several cutting-edge vocational trucks last year, and Fuso launched a new generation of its best-selling Canter on the market. At the same time, Daimler Trucks raised the bar for fuel efficiency, robustness, and longevity with the newly developed Mercedes-Benz engine family known as BlueEfficiency Power.
One of this year’s highlights for the truck industry will surely be the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show, which will be held in Hannover this September. As a showcase for top performance, the IAA represents at once incentive and obligation for Daimler Trucks as the world’s largest globally operating truck manufacturer. You can rest assured that we will present a spectacular array of products from all of our brands at the show.
Today, I would like to use this opportunity to invite you to visit our IAA stand. In order to help shorten the wait, you can use the following pages to become better acquainted with our products, our business units, and our goals.
Best regards, Andreas RenschlerMember of the Board of Management of Daimler AGresponsible for Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler Financial Services provides financing, leasing, fleet management, insur-ance and innovative mobility services.
The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. As a pioneer of automotive engineering, Daimler continues to shape the future of mobility today: The Group’s focus is on innovative and green tech- nologies as well as on safe and superior automobiles that appeal to and fascinate its customers. For many years now, Daimler has been investing continually in the development of alternative drive systems with the goal of making emission-free driving possible in the long term. So in addition to vehicles with hybrid drive, Daimler now has the broadest range of locally emission-free electric vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells. This is just one example of how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsibility towards society and the environment.
Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of the world and has production facilities on five continents. Its current brand portfolio includes, in addition to the world’s most valuable premium automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz, the brands smart, Maybach, Freight- liner, Western Star, BharatBenz, Fuso, Setra, Orion and Thomas Built Buses. The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and Stuttgart (stock exchange symbol DAI). In 2011, the Group sold 2.1 million vehicles and employed a workforce of more than 271,000 people; revenue totaled €106.5 billion and EBIT amounted to € 8.8 billion.

Six strong vehicle brands are concentrated under the Daimler Trucks umbrella. All over the world, we offer customized applications and pioneering technologies in our products.
» Trucks Europe/Latin AmericaThe Mercedes-Benz brand is a synonym for first-class product and service quality, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and sustain-ability, as summed up by the slogan “Trucks you can trust.” Whether the vehicle required is for long-haul, distribution, or construction site operation, the Mercedes-Benz brand provides individual and reliable solutions in the medium and heavy-duty truck segment. For many decades now, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz Trucks has generated groundbreaking innovations – from alterna-tive drives to active and passive safety systems.
» Trucks NAFTAThe Freightliner trucks brand, the main pillar of the Daimler Trucks North America business unit, manufactures trucks in the Class 5 to 8 segment. These vehicles cover a broad range of application areas in the commercial vehicle segment. In line with the “Run Smart” slogan, the company puts its faith in innovation, technology, and customer-focused activities.
The Western Star brand offers premium-class heavy-duty trucks, primarily for use by owner-operators or small fleets. Western Star serves market niches such as special and construction site applica-tions as well as long-haul transport. With their striking exteriors and ideal suitability for off-road appli-cations, the vehicles are without a doubt “serious trucks for serious truckers.”
They’re a common sight on North American roads: the yellow school buses from Thomas Built Buses, which are built on Freightliner chassis. North America’s leading school bus manufacturer can look back on a long and distinguished history. In fact, Thomas Built Buses has been the embodiment of safety and top quality since 1916.
» Trucks AsiaThe Fuso brand has made a name for itself worldwide as a quality-conscious manufacturer. Nowadays its reputation extends well beyond Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The vehicles developed and produ-ced by Fuso are not only of high quality, they are also cost-effective and tailored to the requirements of their application areas. As a result, customers can totally rely on them, day after day. Fuso offers extre-mely customer-focused and comprehensive spare parts and workshop services for its trucks and buses.
Today Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) is an integral part of Daimler Trucks. It plays an important role as competence center for light-duty trucks and state-of-the-art hybrid technology.
» Daimler India Commercial VehiclesThe introduction of the BharatBenz brand strengthens Daimler Trucks’ involvement in India and serves as the basis for introducing a local generation of trucks. The new brand offers customers a com-prehensive product range in the weight classes from 6 to 49 tons, as well as solutions for various areas of application.

Global Excellence. Growth and Market PenetrationWe intend to further expand and strengthen Daimler Trucks’ global presence. This includes the penetration of markets with good growth opportunities, such as Russia, India, or China. We are employing dif-ferent market penetration strategies that are suited to the respective market situations. In markets where we are already active, we want to further strengthen our presence and focus even more intensely on the customers’ needs. Our aim is to grow in terms of quality and quantity alike.
We intend to increase our market share in the triad as well as in Brazil. In this endeavor, our new Actros flagship truck is the most important truck project of the past decade. As part of our strategy for opening up new markets, we will offer customized products for the increasingly important “modern domestic trucks” segment in order to boost growth in these markets.
With the “Get to 8!” program, which addresses continual cost manage- ment and the consistent utilization of synergy potential, Daimler Trucks aims to achieve an eight percent return on sales across the entire business cycle, beginning in 2013. Our global modular system is growing and allows us to develop new products for traditional and new markets at manageable costs. As a result, these product genera-tions will have an unprecedented level of commonality.
Future Product Generations and TechnologiesEnsuring that future product generations offer innovations and even more value for customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative within the Global Excellence program. Thereby, Daimler Trucks is strengthening its leadership position in the area of new technologies. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck was redeveloped from scratch in line with the principles of economy, handling, and comfort, and presented to the public in 2011. The truck already meets the Euro VI emissions standard. One of the areas Daimler focuses on is alter-native drive systems. To this day, Daimler is the frontrunner in the development of hybrid drives – not only for buses, but for trucks as well. The Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid has expanded Daimler Trucks’ product range with a hybrid truck for the European market. At the end of 2011, Fuso unveiled the heavy-duty truck Super Great Eco Hybrid in Japan, and the company will present the new generation of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid for Europe as a highlight at the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in September 2012. These activities – alongside those in the fields of natural gas and fuel cell drives – are combined in Daimler’s Shaping Future Transportation: CleanDrive Concepts initiative.
The Global Excellence program has noticeably shaped the strategic direction of Daimler Trucks since 2005. The program encompasses short, medium, and long-term goals. Global Excellence boosts efficiency and generates economies of scale, while also enabling Daimler Trucks to professionally address the distinct cycles of the commercial vehicle business.
The Global Excellence program encompasses four initiatives:Management of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and Market Penetration, and Future Product Generations and Techno-logies.
During the past year, we transformed strategic growth targets in emerging economies and traditional markets into operational pro-jects with milestones. For example, we expanded Daimler Trucks’ global production network to incorporate the Juiz de Fora plant in Brazil and the production of the heavy-duty Actros truck in Turkey.
Management of Market CyclesThe first initiative – Management of Market Cycles – is designed to make Daimler Trucks less dependent on the cyclical developments that are typical of the sector. This will ensure the long-term profit-ability of the commercial vehicles division. Due to the specific commercial application of the vehicles and, in particular, the exhaust emission regulations and the life cycles of vehicle fleets, the com-mercial vehicle sector is impacted by strong external factors in the global economy.
Operational ExcellenceThe second initiative – Operational Excellence – concentrates on the rigorous reduction of material and fixed costs, the optimization and standardization of global processes, and the increased flexibility of production plants. The foundation here is a management system known as the Truck Operating System (TOS), which is based on the principle of lean management. TOS is designed to be used not only in production but also in all specialized units and departments. Daimler Trucks is also intensifying its efforts to generate additional synergy effects and economies of scale by further networking individual units and pursuing a parts commonization strategy. With the realignment of its powertrain production operations, Daimler Trucks has taken a further step in the implementation of its Global Excellence Strategy.

Low-emission and zero-emission trucks, buses, and vans. Com-mercial vehicles that automatically engage the brakes when they approach obstacles. All-around service – from the purchase of the vehicle and its use to its subsequent disposal – to ensure minimal costs throughout the years of operation. For Daimler Trucks, all of these elements can be summed up as Shaping Future Transporta-tion. Under this caption, we bring together a wide range of technolo-gies and services that make commercial vehicles more environmen-tally friendly, safer, and more economical.
Our aim is to be the driving force behind sustainable mobility. Daim-ler is promoting measures to drastically reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of commercial vehicles with its CleanDrive Concepts. This approach extends across all levels of technology – including combustion engines, natural gas and hybrid drives, fuel cell vehicles, as well as alternative fuels. It also applies to all vehicle segments – from light vans to heavy-duty trucks – and all of the Group’s brands around the world. More than 610,000 environmentally friendly commercial vehicles are already on the road with SCR technology worldwide, as are 22,000 with alternative drive systems. This way, Daimler Trucks is underscoring its leading position with regard to en-vironmentally friendly and sustainable transportation solutions. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros is the world’s first long-haulage truck to be systematically designed in line with the future Euro VI emissions standard. At the same time, we were able to achieve a significant re-duction of fuel consumption in spite of the adaption of a sophisticated emission control system.Daimler Trucks is forging ahead with the development of hybrid tech-nology. A milestone in this regard is the new generation of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, which was unveiled to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in December 2011.
As a pioneer in road safety, we are striving to make driving accident-free. For years now, all of the major safety system innovations have been invented by Daimler. Our SafeDrive Concepts are paving the way for the widespread and particularly safe use of commercial vehicles in road traffic. From trucks and buses to vans, our vehicles are the benchmarks for active and passive safety. For example, our Active Brake Assist and adaptive cruise control provide drivers of trucks and coaches with electronic support. The Active Brake Assist 2 system for the Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty truck can also initiate emergency braking in front of stationary obstacles, such as a sudden traffic jam on the highway. A major advantage of the radar-controlled system is that it is effective from 0 to 89 km/h, regardless of visibility or weather conditions.
Obviously the new safety systems are transferred to all of our vehicles as quickly as possible. No other automaker offers such a wide range of cars, trucks, buses, and vans. Thanks to this approach, our buses can be fitted with systems similar to those used in our trucks. Mercedes-Benz vans have a lot to gain here as well. They can take advantage not only of the safety technology used in commercial vehicles, but also of the systems used in cars, which are more closely related to vans in size and handling.
The third component of Shaping Future Transportation consists of our ValueDrive Concepts, which provide individual customer utility. Commercial vehicles are designed to earn money while also cutting costs as much as possible. However, the purchase price of trucks, vans, and buses represents only a part of their total cost, as the larg-est share is accounted for by operating expenses. That’s why Daimler offers a diverse range of customized services that address every-thing from the vehicle’s purchase and use to its subsequent disposal. This issue has become particularly important in times of economic uncertainty. Mercedes-Benz, Daimler Trucks North America, and Fuso are pioneers in offering a large number of different services in their respective areas.
Shaping Future Transportation.
