Big Ben kicked off proceedings, her- alding the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games by chiming loudly for three minutes. Then more than one billion sets of eyes worldwide turned to the Olympic stadium to be dazzled by fireworks, entertainment and the for- mal proceedings of the Opening Cere- mony. Queen Elizabeth II played her part. After co-starring with James Bond (aka Daniel Craig) in a clever video, she went on to declare the Games open. At the end of the 3-hour-45-minute show, seven teenage athletes in keeping with the London 2012 “inspire a gener- ation” motto, lit the cauldron made up of 204 copper petals brought in with each team during the athlete’s parade. With the Olympic flame alight in London the Games could begin. Opening Ceremony Procession Order During the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the procession of ath- letes is always led by the Greek team, followed by all the other teams in al- phabetical order (in the language of the host country), except for the last team which is always the team of the host country. Burning Bright The London2012 torch relay has been on a 70-day journey passing famous landmarks, through villages, towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom. The Olympic flame began its tour at the traditional lighting ceremony that took place in front of the ruins of the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece on May 10 and finished at the London Olym- pic Stadium where it was used to light the Olympic cauldron during the Open- ing Ceremony. The Flame will remain lit for the duration of the Games and will be extinguished at the closing ceremony. The torch has passed through the hands of 8000 torchbearers who carried the flame approximately 8000 miles (12,800km) during the relay. Badminton BADMINTON made its full Olympic debut at the 1992 Games. Athletes have lightning quick reactions making it a fast, dynamic sport. The aim is to hit a shuttlecock over the net into the opponent’s half of the court within the boundaries so it cannot be returned. Matches are played over the best of three games. The first to reach 21 points by two clear points wins a game. At London 2012 medal events are men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Players have to be strong technically and tactically as they cannot touch the sides or bottom of the pool during play. Matches are divided into four periods of eight minutes. Each team has 30 seconds to score before the ball returns to the opposition. At London 2012, 12 men’s and eight women’s teams will compete in two medal competitions. Men’s water polo has featured on the Olympic program since the Paris 1900 Games. Women’s water polo was introduced at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The white pants/skirts and dark green blazers finished with blue trim, gold buttons, gold Australian emblem and Olympic rings looked classy. The outfit was complemented by a pair of iconic white Dunlop Volley shoes with bottle green and navy trim, green laces, a gold embroidered Olympic ring motif and an “AUS 2012” gold tag. On the sporting fields and arenas our Aussie athletes are outfitted in competition wear of green and gold with a touch of fluoro yellow, hidden kangaroo prints and the Southern Cross. Designed and made by adidas they incorporate state-of-the art technology to help the athletes perform their best. Hopefully we will see the team uniforms on the podium regularly throughout the Olympics.
