was in sixth place with 13.56 percentageof the vote.“It’s nice to be here with all the people
who have worked so hard on this cam-paign,” said a beaming Francisco, at anelection night party at Blush. “Myapproach since I have been on council isto focus on city issues. I am not interest-
ed in ideology.”Rowse, who was appointed to the
council seat last December after DasWilliams was elected to the state
Assembly was thrilled with the results. But the biggest surprise of the night
was Murillo’s third-place finish.

NEWS IN BRIEFCain: I won’t be forced out
Businessman Herman Cain defiantly denied sexual harassmentallegations against him on Tuesday and vowed they would not forcehim to withdraw from the race for the 2012 Republican presidentialnomination."Ain't going to happen," Cain said, referring to the chances of
him giving up his presidential bid. "We will get through this."Cain spoke at a televised news conference to respond to Sharon
Bialek, a Chicago woman who went public on Monday with allega-tions that Cain made a sexual advance against her in 1997 when hewas head of the National Restaurant Association.Bialek is among at least four women to accuse Cain of sexual
harassment. A woman who last week accused Cain of a series ofunwanted advances spoke publicly for the first time and told TheNew York Times she had been warming to the idea of a "joint pressconference where all of the women would be together" to lay outtheir cases.
Big-city incumbents win racesIncumbent mayors in Houston, Philadelphia, Indianapolis,
Baltimore, and Charlotte, North Carolina, appeared to defeatchallengers on Tuesday as voters favored the familiar in a timeof diminishing local budgets and a weak national economy. The elections were among the biggest of hundreds of mayoral
contests across the country that for the most part featured lack-luster races and low voter turnout. In Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States,
Mayor Annise Parker, a Democrat and the first openly gaymayor of a major U.S. city, defeated five challengers in an offi-cially nonpartisan race. She avoided a runoff by snagging 51percent of the vote.Parker, who has dealt with citywide layoffs and cuts to services
because of budget reductions in her first two years in office, facedrelatively unknown challengers as she sought a second term.
Reality stars expecting 20th child"19 Kids and Counting" stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are
expecting the birth of their 20th child, the couple said on Tuesday, predicting they would yet again change the name of their realityTV show. The Duggars said their new baby is due in April."We are just really looking forward with excitement to this new
little gift," Michelle Duggar said in a video for cable network TLCthat was posted online on Tuesday. "And so the title will change to'20 and Counting.'"The Duggars' television show has changed titles as the family
has grown. It was called "17 Kids and Counting" in 2008, and withthe birth of each child the name has been updated.Michelle, 45, said in the video that she and her husband were sur-
prised at the latest pregnancy. During her last pregnancy, Michelle wasdiagnosed with pre-eclampsia, or pregnancy-induced hypertension.
NEWSCounty offers Veterans discountsIn honor of Veterans Day on Friday,
the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelteris making it easier to adopt an animal. On Saturday, prices for all cats and
dogs will be slashed by $30 and all rab-bits by $10. Without the discount, theshelter charges $90 for dogs, $65 for
cats, and $25 for rabbits. Each of thecounty’s three shelters, one in SantaBarbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc iscurrently full, collectively housing morethan 650 animals. Adopting from the shelter ensures that
the animal has been given proper veteri-
nary care, vaccinations, flees and ticktreatment, and will be spayed orneutered. There are a lot of reasons whyanimals wind up in shelters, but they allhold one thing in common — a secondopportunity to find a loving home.

Marriott coming to GoletaBY NICK C. TONKIN
DAILY SOUND CORRESPONDENTThe Courtyard Marriott is coming to
Goleta. The city broke ground yesterday on a
new hotel at 401 Storke Road. Officialshope the hotel will boost the city’stourism industry and get a foot in thedoor for hosting conferences as it worksto shed the perception of being a suburbof Santa Barbara.“It will be a great benefit to the city in
many different ways,” Connell said. The $28 million project entails a
68,000 square-foot, 106-room hotel with1,300 square-feet of meeting space.Rooms feature free WiFi, flat screenTVs, microwave ovens, and workspaces.Mayor Margaret Connell said this
will be Goleta’s first boutique hotel. It’salso the first of Goleta’s three hotelsunder development to start construc-tion.Officials expect to complete the proj-
ect by the summer of 2012. Goleta citycouncil member Roger Aceves said thatcoincides with the changes in Goleta’srevenue neutrality agreement with thecounty, which allow the city to keep allof its bed tax revenue.“It couldn’t come at a better time,”
Aceves said. With UCSB only a mile away, and
next to the hub of Goleta TechnologyPark, Aceves hopes the hotel willbecome a magnet for visiting students, families, and professionals.“To have a nice hotel literally within
walking distance from UCSB is going tobe extremely beneficial to those events,”Aceves said.
FINAL PIECEDeveloper Bob Olson said the project
is one of the final pieces in the CaminoReal mixed used project. Guests will beable to shop at Camino Real stores, playat Girsh Park, and eventually skate at thenew ice rink.“Everything works together,” Olson
said.
Lack of conference space within thecity has been cited as a key economicconcern for Goleta. Despite a preponder-ance of companies headquartered in theGoleta area, Santa Barbara hotels gobbleup the larger conferences.Aceves said that will change as the
city puts in hotels across the price spec-trum.“There’s going to be enough variety
that there really isn’t any reason to gointo Santa Barbara when there’s greatplaces to stay in Goleta,” Aceves said.

Schwartz tanks at pollsBY NICK C. TONKIN
DAILY SOUND CORRESPONDENTOnce hailed as a frontrunner, Santa
Barbara City Council candidate DeborahSchwartz crashed and burned at the pollson Tuesday.Although she raised more than
$100,000, Schwartz finished in sixthplace.Schwartz and her supporters stayed
optimistic throughout the night at ElPaseo Restaurant but hope never materi-alized.“We’ve done everything we can to
connect with voters and encourage themto come out and vote in this importantelection,” Schwartz said.City council member Grant House had
expected a rally toward the ends. But hethought Schwartz had a very “statesman”presence and the results would have beendifferent.“I would have thought Murillo and
Schwartz would have been at the verytop,” House admitted. The three incumbents, Dale Francisco,
Randy Rowse, and Michael Self, workedto hold onto a conservative majority heldsince Rowse’s appointment to DasWilliams’ seat in December. They faced challenges from three
Democratic-backed candidates, formercouncil member Iya Falcone, formerjournalist Cathy Murillo, and Schwartz.Stunned by Rowse’s appointment,Democrats organized early and the chal-lengers had managed to out raise theincumbents.Independent Sharon Byrne launched
her campaign under the protests of con-servatives but became a spoiler for bothsides after snapping up the third publicsafety union endorsement.
Schwartz emerged as the front runneramong the three Democrats, grabbingendorsements from the public safetyunions and almost every Democraticheavyweight in the county. She hadexperience in the private sector and twoyears on the planning commission, andthe name Schwartz was already known inSanta BarbaraShe eclipsed all the other candidates in
fundraising early on and still ended upraising more money than any other.Assemblyman Das Williams down-
played Schwartz weak performance.“For the first time in over a decade,
local Democrats and environmentalistswere almost completely united in sup-porting the three candidates,” Williamssaid.Williams noted that word about
Schwartz’s default on a $34,000 loanhadn’t helped. One Democratic cam-paign volunteer commented that someregistered had been put off by the allega-tions.Schwartz said she stood by her cam-
paign work.“Some said they wouldn’t vote for
her,” the worker said.

DEATH NOTICE
New ‘Oz’ book alittle long winded
“Out of Oz” by Gregory Maguire; c.2011, WilliamMorrow; $26.99 / $29.99 Canada; 568 pages
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYERTHE BOOKWORM SEZ
You know the value of books.Just by virtue of reading this article, you
understand how much books bring to your life. You know how they take you away to anotherplace and time. You can learn from a book, laugh or cry, find ideas, get comfort, or getprovoked. But what if having a book meant life or
death? What if it could change the outcome ofan entire nation? Or what if, as in “Out of Oz”by Gregory Maguire, words in an ancient bookcould influence the future?Lady Glinda was tired of war. Word of Munchkinland’s invasion by
Emerald City forces was bad enough, butwhen Loyal Oz troupes invaded her home andforced her to cut staff, well, that was the finalinsult. How could she ever run a proper housewith a maid, a butler, and a ragamuffin scullerygirl?Sir Brr supposed that it was safer to travel
with the dwarf than alone, even though thedwarf was encumbered by the tumbledownwagon holding the Clock of the Time Dragonand that ratty book he called the Grimmerie.Nor, Brr’s human wife, also thought that stay-ing together was prudent, especially since Brrhad lived up to his Cowardly name and wasnow a fugitive Lion - and yet, Brr was braveenough to keep his vow to protect the grand-child of the Witch of the West, ElphabaThropp. Little Rain was a strange girl. Perhaps it was
because she spent her childhood working, without parents to raise her right. Maybe it wasbecause few paid her heed until the EC com-mander taught her to read. Down deep, Rainwas a smart child and she learned fast – whichwas good, because there was much she neededto know.Long ago, Munchkinland was rocked by
that whole Dorothy thing, and though Dorothyhad nothing to do with the clash betweenLoyal Oz and the Munchkins, people stilltalked about what happened. Surely, that girlknew her house was going to fall on ElphabaThropp. Surely, Dorothy Gale was guilty of
murder.Surely, Dorothy would have a big surprise
waiting when she accidentally, unhappily land-ed in Oz again…If you’re a fan of this series, stop right here
and go get the book. Go on. You won’t besorry.Sweeping, grand, fantastical, and a little
long-winded, “Out of Oz” snatches readersfrom their comfortable chairs and plants themin a world where dragons pull boats, greenotters swim through rivers of rice, and “a littlebird told me” could be correct. This is a worldat war, but author Gregory Maguire lends it acertain beauty with his words, as well as a bitof humor and definite wit. I enjoyed this satis-fying end to the Wicked Years, though it willleave fans groaning for more.If you’ve somehow missed the first three
novels in this series, go back and get thembecause “Out of Oz” isn’t the place to start. For devotees of these books, though, this is avaluable one.

Murillo, a former journalist for the SantaBarbara Independent and KCSB, will becomethe first Latina in the history of the SantaBarbara City Council.“To be the first Latina on the council would
be a great honor,” said Murillo, tears rollingdown her cheek. “I only wish that my motherand grandmother could be here to see thisbecause they would be very proud.”Murillo campaigned on a platform of open-
ing libraries seven days a week, and promisingto improve after-school and recreation oppor-tunities for the youth. She is also an advocatefor affordable housing and alternative trans-portation.Murillo’s success came as no surprise to her
husband, David Pritchett, who said that theservice she has provided the communitythrough her career in journalism has earned herwidespread popularity.“I’m not surprised,” Pritchett said. “Cathy is
very popular and has 15 years of positive namerecognition.” He also said that her success in part was due
to a last-ditch effort by her supporters to rallyvoters in the days leading up to the election. Murillo was the only candidate backed by
the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party towin a council seat. Falcone, who was alsoendorsed by the party, and who has namerecognition from serving eight years on thecouncil, said that she respects the decisions of
voters but also thinks that the power of incum-bency played a large part in the results. Councilman Rowse said he was helped by
his long ties to the community.“Being a businessman all these years, not
being a political figure, I think a lot of peoplecan relate to that,” Rowse said.Though happy to be serving another term
with fellow incumbent Francisco, Rowse saidhe would be sorry to see Self off the council.“We really had a good seven-man team
working,” he said. Regardless he is happy to have another shot
at the council. Being elected to the positionwill be a first for the councilman, who wasappointed to the position last year.“It’s nice to have people say ‘yeah it’s good
to have you up there,’” Rowse said.If results hold, Self would have been ousted
from the council after serving only two years. She told the Daily Sound that she had no
regrets about her campaign and that she washopeful the election would turn her way by theend of the night.“I felt it would be close,” Self said.Since last December, a conservative major-
ity has ruled the City Council. Self, Francisco,Rowse and Hotchkiss have targeted the home-less, cracked down on medicinal marijuanadispensaries, and pushed for a gang injunction. The Democratic Party announced their slate
of candidates early in the year, looking to seizepower at City Hall. With the election of Murillo, the power has
shifted back to the liberals.
