DAILY QUESTION
November 25, 2008
1. A neutralization reaction occurs between an ______ and a _______.
Agenda 11/25/08
• Daily Question• Check-in: Lab Worksheets• Ch 8 Section 2 Notes
Assignments: 1. 8-2 Worksheet due 11/26
Neutralization Reaction
• A reaction between an acid and a base
• Spectator ions are ions that do not change during the reaction between H3O+ and OH-
.
Salts
• Strong acids and bases react to form water and a salt
• Salts are ionic compounds that form when a metal atom or a positive radical replaces the hydrogen of an acid
• Salts are often soluble in water
Not all neutralization reactions produce neutral solutions
• The final pH of a solution depends on the amounts of acid and base that are combined AND whether they are strong or weak
Titration
• Process of gradually adding one solution to another solution in the presence of an indicator to determine the concentration of one of the solutions
• During process, the color changes
Equivalence Point
• Original amount of the acid equals the original amount of the base
• Can occur at the pH 7 – which is neutral
• But the equivalence point is not always neutral– Strong base and weak acid – Weak base and strong acid
Salts (including NaCl, but not limited to NaCl)
• Have many different uses– Seasoning on food– Water softeners– Medical diagnosis
• Are all around us– In food– Building materials– Soaps – Detergents
