Los Angeles leads the season series, 3-1, having taken three of four at Dodger Stadium July 25-28. After a nationally televised tilt with the Reds on ESPN Sunday night, the Dodgers will head back to Los Angeles for a seven-game homestand against the Diamondbacks (3) and Giants (4). Los Angeles leads Arizona by 12.0 games in the NL West, is 27 games above the .500 mark and the club’s magic number to clinch the division is 12. The Dodgers’ biggest lead this season was 13.5-games, which they held heading into play Wednesday. That lead was the largest by a Dodger team since the 1977 squad led by 13.5 games after play on Sept. 13. The last time the Dodgers had a lead larger than 13.5-games was after play on Aug. 2, 1977 (14.0). With a victory tonight, the Dodgers can clinch a winning record on the road for the second consecutive season and just the fourth time in the last 10 seasons (2004, 2009, 2012 and 2013). With 13 games left on the road this season, the Dodgers have a chance to set a Los Angeles mark for road victories in a season: Best Road Records in L.A. OUT OF THE BLUE: The Dodgers are now 3-1 in September on the heels of going 19-5 in July and 23-6 in August. Since the All-Star break, the club is 36-9 (.800) and since June 22, Los Angeles is 53-14 (.791). The Dodgers rank third in the Major Leagues with a 3.23 team ERA, including an MLB-leading 3.09 ERA by the club’s starters (293 ER/852.1 IP). Since July 26, Dodger starters have a 24-6 record with a 2.11 ERA (58 ER/247.1 IP) and 12 starts with zero earned runs in 38 games. Overall, Los Angeles is tied with Colorado for first in the NL with a .268 team batting average and leads the Senior Circuit with a .330 team OBP. ROOKIE SENSATIONS: On this date in 1981, Dodger hurler Fernando Valenzuela tied a National League rookie record by posting his seventh shutout, a 5-0 victory over the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium. In that contest, Dodger first base coach Davey Lopes had three hits and two RBI while Dodger broadcaster Rick Monday tripled in a run. An argument could be made that the 2013 Dodgers boast the league’s best rookie pitcher and best rookie position player in Hyun-Jin Ryu and Yasiel Puig, respectively. Ryu, who had his start pushed back due to mid-back soreness, will most likely take the mound against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday or Wednesday. The left-hander is 13-5 and ranks 10 th in the NL with a 3.02 ERA in 26 starts. Puig aggravated a right knee injury Monday, but was available to pinch hit and is expected back in the lineup tonight. Puig is batting .596 (34-for-57) with seven home runs on the first pitch this season and is hitting .493 (35-for-71) when leading off an inning. HOT TICKET!: The following Dodger home games are now sold out: Sept. 9 vs. Arizona (Hello Kitty Bobblehead), Sept. 12 vs. San Francisco (Magic Johnson Bobblehead) and Sept. 14 vs. San Francisco (La Gran Fiesta – Viva Los Dodgers). Fans still have the opportunity to win a “Magic Ticket” for the Sept. 12 game through the #MeetMagic Bobblehead Hunt, which launched yesterday. More information can be found at Dodgers.com/MeetMagic. NO MINOR THING: In postseason action last night, Single-A Rancho Cucamonga evened its first-round series at 1-1 with an 8-5 victory over Inland Empire, while Single-A Great Lakes’ season came to an end with a 5-1 loss to South Bend as they were swept in their best-of- three series. Rancho will play a decisive Game 3 tonight in hopes of advancing to a second-round series against Lancaster. Rancho Cucamonga first baseman O’Koyea Dickson went 4- for-4 with a double and two runs scored last night and has gone 6-for-8 with a double and two RBI through two games in the California League playoffs. SEEING RED: The Dodgers have the National League’s top winning percentage against the Reds since 2006, posting a .686 mark (35-16), which includes a 17-9 record (.708) at Great American Ball Park. Andre Ethier .311 THE COOLER: Last week, closer Kenley Jansen became the first Dodger reliever to strike out 100 in a season since Jonathan Broxton in 2009 (114). He is currently tied for 10 th on the all-time single-season Dodger strikeout list by a reliever and is 43 away from Mike Marshall’s record (1974, 143). Jansen leads MLB relievers with 100 Ks against just 12 walks, good for a 7.69 SO/BB ratio (3 rd , MLB). Since the All-Star break, the Dodger bullpen has posted a 2.35 ERA (32 ER/122.1 IP), the third-lowest mark in the Majors. HONORING DYLAN: Dodger second baseman Mark Ellis and his wife, Sarah, The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, the Reds Community Fund and Rawlings have partnered to provide specialty helmets and fit kits for the Union City (IN) baseball league. During the All-Star break in July, Dylan Williams, 8, was struck on the head with a ball while playing the field and, tragically, passed away a few days later. Tomorrow in Cincinnati, the Ellises will present a check during a pregame ceremony to the Dylan Williams Always An All-Star Foundation, which helps to promote field safety for kids, and will play host the Williams family and Dylan’s teammates at the game.
