TOURISM Another Route 66 Festival planned Hubble Ray Smith [email protected] KINGMAN Building upon the momentum created by the International Route 66 Festival in August, city officials are meeting with festival organizers to plan another event for next year, probably in September, King- man City Manager John Dougherty said Tuesday. He met with festival orga- nizer and downtown busi- ness owner Dora Manley a couple of weeks ago to set a tentative date and talk about how to improve the Route 66 festival that drew 8,000 people over three days. “We’d like to have a rodeo,” Dougherty said in addressing the monthly King- man Social Club luncheon at Garlic Clove restaurant. “People from Europe view us as the Old West with cow- boys and horses. They were watching the Route 66 festi- val on YouTube at 4 o’clock in the morning in Europe. “We’re on the map. We’ve just got to continue that.” One of the Social Club members complained there wasn’t enough signage at this year’s festival to let peo- ple know what was happen- ing downtown and where. See ROUTE 66, 3 Efforts under way to restore habitat for deer, quail DOUG McMURDO [email protected] K INGMAN – $1.1 mil- lion has been allo- cated to improve mule deer and scaled quail popu- lations in the state, with about $400,000 dedicated to improving habitat for a dwindling number of mule deer in Mohave County’s vast Unit 16A, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Using funds from the Wildlife Restoration Pro- gram – which receives a portion of its funding from an 11 percent federal excise tax paid by the makers of firearms, ammunition and archery equipment – Game and Fish, and the federal Bureau of Land Manage- ment, have planned pre- scribed burns in an effort to “reopen and reinvigorate” desert shrublands that are thick with overgrown veg- etation, according to Bill Andres, a Game and Fish information chief. The scaled quail habitat Game and Fish targets is in units 31 and 32 near Tucson. In both cases, the dete- rioration of the respective habitats has resulted in a See DEER, 3 • At more than 1.4 million acres, Unit 16A is more than twice the size of Rhode Island. The Bureau of Land Management controls 55 percent of the unit’s land; 15.7 percent is managed by state agencies and 28.2 percent is in private hands. • The unit begins and ends in Kingman at Inter- state 40 and exit 48 at Beale Street. From there it runs south and west pretty much in line with I-40 to Highway 95, exit 9. From there it travels in an easterly direction, along the Bill Williams and Santa Maria rivers until it meets U.S. 93, and from there it meanders north and west on U.S. 93 back to I-40 and the Beale Street exit. • The unit’s habitat ranges from elevations of about 8,400 feet in the Hualapai Mountains to Mohave scrub brush in the lower elevations. From forests to cactus, sycamores and saguaros, the unit supports a variety of wildlife, including big- horn sheep in the Mohave Mountains east of Lake Havasu City. Other sheep habitat can be found in the Little Black Mountains, the Aubrey Peak Wil- derness and the Rawhide Mountains northwest of Alamo Lake. • Elk can be found in the Hualapai Mountains in very rough terrain. Note: A number of elk live in Mohave County Park and cannot be hunted. • Javelina can be found in the foothills of the Hualapai Mountains in the 4,000- to 5,000-foot range, as well as the Big Sandy River off U.S. 93 south of Wikieup and the Poachie Mountains west of U.S. 93. • Mountain lions are there for the taking in the Hualapai Mountains and many other ranges within the unit. • Dove and quail (Gambels) are spread through- out the unit.
