Christianity in Northern Europe issynonymous with Lutheranism. It isoften forgotten, however, that forapproximately five hundred yearsScandinavia was a part of the CatholicWorld. It was also during this period thatso many of the region’s cathedrals andmedieval parish churches were erectedindeed, the same structures that laterinfluenced Lutheran architecture in bothScandinavia and Scandinavian-America.

Magnusson’s illustrated lecture will describe what for many ofus are lesser known aspects of early ecclesiastical architecture inScandinavia. With frequent references to Denmark and Norway,Magnusson will give us a guided tour through the ancientSwedish countryside where monuments to religious beliefevolved from sites of ritualized blót and pagan shrines to themassive stone and mortar bastions of “Church Militant.”

Brian Magnusson received his Ph.D. in North EuropeanPrehistory (and Art) from the University of Wisconsin. He is anassistant professor (docent ) in Nordic and American Art andCulture at Jyväskylä University in Finland, and an affiliateassistant professor in Scandinavian Studies at the University ofWashington.
