Debuting as chair of the Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Committee, Sandy DeMartino handled a heavy agenda with ease while maintaining focus on the overall purpose of the institution: making sure people enjoy playing bridge. Echoing a sentiment expressed by others at the meeting, DeMartino urged Goodwill Committee members to wear their pins to remind others that “we can be competitive and still be friendly, caring and ethical.” DeMartino, elected chair of the committee last fall, started off by acknowledging the co-chairs who will work with her through the year: Marilyn Vilhauer, Sandy Arlinghaus, Joo-Hee Janicki and Janise Saul, who were in attendance, and Roger Smith and Carol Hamilton, who were not. Robert Hartman, ACBL’s chief executive, was next and he reminded those gathered that the ACBL will combine forces with the Alzheimer’s Association for a national fund-raising effort called The Longest Day on June 21. The CEO noted that the slogan of the Alzheimer’s Association is “The compassion to care, the leadership to conquer,” and he said the same could be applied to the Goodwill Committee and its role in assuring a bright future for the ACBL. “Get your clubs registered for the Longest Day games,” Hartman said. ACBL President Donald Mamula praised Goodwill Committee members for being on the front lines in the effort to promote duplicate as a fun, social pastime instead of just a competition. “Aside from the competition,” Mamula said, “equally important is the social side. We enjoy the time we spend together and the friends we make. Even if you have your head handed to you, you can say ‘they were nice folks.’ You have taken us to the point where we can enjoy the total experience.” The president thanked Goodwill Committee members for their actions on behalf of bridge, “and I challenge you to repeat them as we go forward.” Georgia Heth, who represents District 8 on the ACBL board, took the podium to present an award to Mike Carmen, chair of the 2013 Spring NABC, as the top volunteer in the district. Carmen has served on the district board for 24 years and has chaired numerous tournaments in that time. He is serving as NABC chair in St. Louis for the third time. In August 2011, Patty Tucker rolled out her Learn Bridge in a Day? workshop at the Labor Day Regional in Atlanta, her hometown. Tucker, Melissa Bernhardt and their company, Whirlwind Bridge, have come so far with the effort that the ACBL Educational Foundation is interested in making the program available throughout North America. Tucker has already conducted six workshops and has more scheduled for later this year. “I know it works,” says Tucker, “and the Educational Foundation does, too.” “It’s exciting,” says Barbara Heller, president of the Educational Foundation. At the Summer NABC in Atlanta, Whirlwind Bridge will make a presentation to the Educational Foundation as a step toward the foundation’s formalizing an agreement with Tucker’s company. At the debut of LBIAD, 149 people showed up for the five-hour presentation. Tucker notes that the goal of the workshop is to get participants to “understand what bridge is, how it works and how much fun it can be.” Tucker says she developed the program after realizing that traditional introductions to bridge – usually six- to eight-week classes – did not accommodate the busy schedules of today’s potential players. JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSCommon errors – and how

to avoid themNot understanding captaincy

Players often go out to eat after a session of bridge. At a tournament years ago, a small group was doing just that. After ordering, they were surprised when their server returned with a tray that held much too much food. “We didn’t order all that!” one of the players cried. The server was insistent, however: “I’m sure I heard someone say ‘Three clubs.’”

A fundamental principle of bidding is the need for one member of the partnership to limit his hand as soon as possible.

If you are uncertain about what that means, consider the most common limit bid you have in your repertoire: an opening bid of 1NT.

In the USA, most play that a 1NT opener shows 15-17 high-card points in a balanced hand, but some prefer for 14-16. There are many different ranges around the world, but most are narrow.

Consider the difference between a 1NT opener and an opening of, say, 1♥. In most systems, an opening of one of a suit can be made on a good – or maybe even a not-so-good – 11 HCP up to 20 or more, perhaps just short of a strong, forcing opening.

That’s a wide range. The sooner opener more clearly defines his hand – perhaps via a 1NT rebid or by rebidding his suit at a minimum level – the

better the chances that the partnership will arrive at the correct contract.

Similarly, in the auction, 1♣ – Pass – 1♥, responder’s range can be pretty wide. Responder, in fact, could have a very strong hand with which he prefers to go slowly.

So what is all this leading up to? It is a discussion of a principle known as captaincy.

Basically, captaincy comes into play when one member of a partnership limits his hand. At that point, the other player becomes “captain” of the auction.

It makes sense, doesn’t it?When you open 1NT with,

say, a range of 15-17 HCP, who in the partnership knows how high the bidding should go? Not you. You have no idea how strong partner’s hand is, especially if partner is an unpassed hand. The captain on this auction is your partner, who can look at his own hand and know whether to 1. Give up on game – perhaps

passing 1NT or transferring and then passing.2. Invite game in some way, perhaps by bidding

2NT or transferring and bidding 2NT or raising the transfer suit.

3. Insist on game in one of a variety of ways.4. Invite slam, perhaps by bidding 4NT directly

(not asking for aces).5. Insist on slam.

You must answer partner’s questions and/or respond to his invitations and, most important, abide by partner’s decisions.

You will profit in your results and earn respect as a player by making this your mantra: Once I have described my hand, I will not bid again unless forced to do so by my partner.

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Responding to 1NT with 4-3-3-3, deception, placing the cards. Dlr: South ♠ K J 8 5 Vul: None ♥ 4 3 2 ♦ 9 3 2 ♣ A K 5 ♠ 4 3 ♠ Q 7 2 ♥ J 9 8 7 6 ♥ A 10 ♦ K J 5 ♦ Q 10 6 4 ♣ 10 8 7 ♣ 9 6 4 2 ♠ A 10 9 6 ♥ K Q 5 ♦ A 8 7 ♣ Q J 3 West North East South 1NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♥7. Bidding commentary: As North, it is generally

not a good idea to use Stayman with a flat hand. In this case, even though you have missed a 4-4 spade fit, 3NT is a better contract because your hand and partner’s have the same distribution.

Defensive commentary: A normal fourth-highest lead. East wins the ♥A and returns the ♥10. As West, you can follow with the ♥6 to show a five-card suit or you can make an even stronger play, the ♥J. This play informs partner that the jack is your highest remaining equal informing partner that declarer has the ♥Q.

Play commentary: As South, win the ♥K at trick two, higher equal for deceptive purposes. As it happens, you can even misguess the ♠Q and take nine tricks, but if you were in 4♠, you would have

to find the ♠Q to make your contract. Also, if you are playing in a tournament where overtricks are the heart and soul of the game, finding the ♠Q will give you a good score, perhaps a near top. There is a clue. West appears to have started with five hearts and eight “other” cards. East has two hearts and 11 other cards. Play the defender who has more

“other” cards (East) for the missing queen. Play commentary #2: As South, if you want

to further confirm your “other-card,” count, it can’t hurt to cash three rounds of clubs. As it happens, both follow to three rounds of clubs, so you don’t get any more information. Stick with plan A and play East for the ♠Q.

Margot Hennings, who represents District 6 on the ACBL board, presented the Goodwill Member of the Year award to Joe Oliver, of Chesapeake VA. His father, Ken, who taught him to play bridge, came to St. Louis from his home in Riverside CA just for the occasion.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Oliver. “It’s good to be recognized for doing something I really love.”

Oliver said that he tries to impart the same message to all of his new students, many of whom know nothing about bridge: “You’re going to love this game, and there’s a place for you in bridge no matter how good you are. New players are the lifeblood of the game, and they’re out there.”

Sharon Anderson, chairman of the ACBL board, was next with the presentation of the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award to Sue Kroning of Seaside OR.

Anderson was ACBL president in 2012, and one of her duties was to select the top volunteer. She said Kroning, Seaside OR, was selected from among 237 letters of recommendation for the award. Anderson said that in reviewing the letters, she noted that the highly respected volunteers had similar characteristics: they have a great attitude, an inclination to empower others, a commitment to hospitality “and they are willing to do anything.”

Kroning is a member of the District 20 board and the ACBL Goodwill and Charity committees.

As the district’s Intermediate/Newcomer coordinator, Kroning revitalized the I/N program, producing impressive results. For example, she helped the Portland sectional increase I/N tables from three in January 1997 to 64 in January 2012. Seaside went from no I/N tables in 1997 to 24 in one afternoon in 2009. She was I/N chair for the 2004 Spring NABC in Reno.

“I owe a lot to bridge,” said Kroning, who told of moving from South Africa to Phoenix AZ and knowing no one. “I went to the bridge club and was embraced and I got a lot of new friends,” she said.

Kroning credited her husband, Robert, for his support. “The spouse,” she said, “always does a whole lot of things.”

After Kroning received her award from Anderson, DeMartino acknowledged Audrey Grant, co-recipient of the ACBL Honorary Member award with the late TD Millard Nachtwey.

ACBL President Donald Mamula addresses Goodwill Committee members.

Georgia Heth, District 8 representative on the ACBL board, with NABC Chair Mike Carmen.

Educational foundation

“People just can’t commit to six or eight weeks,” Tucker says. “But they will give you an afternoon.”

The idea of LBIAD, she says, is “to let people learn enough about bridge to want to continue.” The follow-up, which Tucker says is a key element of the Whirlwind Bridge effort, is to guide workshop participants to bridge classes. “It’s important to nurture the budding interest of the new players,” she says.

Of the 149 who took part in the first LBIAD workshop, Tucker says, 87 continued by signing up for bridge classes.

Heller says the foundation’s interest was sparked by numerous requests from around the country for grants to run the LBIAD workshops. “We are looking forward to being more proactive in these kinds of things,” she says. “We are trying to work with individuals who are already doing good things to offer to people.”

Tucker says that the beta program to be presented in Atlanta will include revisions to fit the requirements of the foundation regarding training for LBIAD instructors and workshop follow-ups.

She says that Whirlwind Bridge will also work with the American Bridge Teachers Association to show that group how LBIAD works. The ABTA annual convention typically takes place at the Summer NABC.

Heller is keen to let ACBL members know what the foundation does “and how we do it.” She wants to get the word out that the foundation can be designated as the beneficiary of special club games, including charity games. She notes also that the Educational Foundation is revamping its website and grant application process.

The ACBL Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization (501c3) established in l987 to get more people of all ages and walks of life playing bridge.

In order to keep the bridge public informed of appeal results in a timely fashion, the NABC Daily Bulletin staff publishes write-ups.

Every effort is made to ensure that these reports are accurate and complete. Before they are published in the NABC Appeals Casebook, however, revisions may be made.

APPEAL CASE 1Event: Lebhar IMP PairsSession: Second qualifyingSubject: Break in tempo (BIT)

Bd: 24 Carl Sharp Vul: None ♠ K J 10 9 8 3 Dlr: West ♥ 4 2 ♦ 9 7 ♣ A 3 2Lloyd Arvedon Glenn Robbins ♠ A 4 2 ♠ 5 ♥ K Q J 9 6 5 ♥ 10 7 ♦ Q J 4 ♦ K 10 5 3 ♣ K ♣ J 10 8 7 6 4 Steven Kreiner ♠ Q 7 6 ♥ A 8 3 ♦ A 8 6 2 ♣ Q 9 5 West North East South 1♥ 1♠ Pass 2♥ 3♥ Pass Pass 3♠(1) Pass 4♠ All Pass

(1) Break in tempo:Final Contract: 4♠ by NorthOpening Lead: ♥10Table Result: Making four, N–S plus 420Director Ruling: Making four, N–S plus 420Committee ruling: Making four, N–S plus 420Facts: The director was called after the play was

completed. All four players agreed there had been a noticeable hesitation before South’s 3♠ bid.

Director’s ruling: The director ruled that there was unauthorized information available to North from South’s hesitation, but that a slow bid of 3♠ did not demonstrably suggest bidding 4♠. Accordingly, no adjustment was made. The table result stands, 4♠ by North, making four, N–S plus 420.

The appeal: East–West appealed the ruling and attended the hearing. East–West contended that when someone pauses to think in a position like this, they are always thinking about bidding more. Further, they asserted that no one who makes a limit raise sells out at the three level, so it is impossible that South was thinking of passing. The Appeals Committee determined that the BIT lasted 10-20 seconds.

The decision: With such clear agreement on the facts, the only question was whether the BIT demonstrably suggested bidding 4♠ over passing. Because it appears that South was actually considering passing 3♥, the appellants’ claims seem incorrect. The Appeals Committee judged that, from North’s perspective, South could have been considering passing, doubling or bidding 4♠. In the AC’s experience, “Slow shows extras,” but at IMPs, many just bid game in close decisions. So, the chances that South was considering bidding game are reduced and the ambiguity of the hesitation is increased.

Under the old rules, where the BIT only had to “suggest” line of action, perhaps this case would fit the criteria; but with the new rule, since the suggestion is only one of a group and is not the dominant element thereof, 4♠ is allowed. The table result stands, 4♠ by North, making 4, N/S plus 420.

The appeal was found to have sufficient merit.DIC: Su DoeChairperson: Jeff GoldsmithCommittee members: Michael Huston, Aaron

The ACBL is the inaugural partner of The Longest Day, a sunrise-to-sunset team event to raise funds that fuel the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. This event challenges participants to push their limits and complete approximately 16 hours of a consecutive activity. The theme for The Longest Day is “do something you love” – like play bridge!

When you register to participate in The Longest Day at thelongestday.alz.org you will receive a registration kit with:• Flyers to advertise your event to the community• Publicity tools to maximize your exposure• Items to decorate your club/event on The Longest Day• Giveaways for your participating players/team members

There is a whole host of online tools to help you recruit team members and fundraise virtually.

Here are some ideas for your fundraising team’s activity on The Longest Day:• Play marathon bridge games. The ACBL is relaxing the rules so all sanctioned clubs can hold as many special games as

desired on June 21, 2013. *Special game fees and upgraded masterpoints apply. All sanction fees collected will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Teach free beginner bridge lessons all day. It’s a great way to find new players and meet social/former college bridge players in your community, all while supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Stage a bridge exhibition where members of your team play bridge in different public locations over the course of the day. You’ll get a lot of attention and even more donations for your team’s cause.

Approximately 5 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s, but by 2050, nearly 16 million people could be affected. There is no cure, but some research indicates that playing mentally challenging games such as bridge may help keep your brain healthy. So do something you love on The Longest Day that might actually slow the onset of Alzheimer’s – play bridge!

Visit thelongestday.alz.org for more information.

The Longest Day will be here June 21st,but ACBL registration opens today!

The InsiderThe Insider mentioned the 57 consecutive

NABCs that Martin Ware has worked on the Tournament Services team. Some more detail seems in order. The first NABC Martin worked was the 1994 summer tournament in San Diego. This was the one where we played in a parking garage with Port-a-Lets outside the back door. It was a big tournament and Martin spent half his time gluing broken bidding boxes and the other half setting up meetings and classes for Julie Greenberg.

Then on to Minneapolis, where Martin had to load a truck . . . outdoors . . . using a metal ramp . . . in the freezing rain . . . at two in the morning. Good times! No, the Insider is not going to list 57 NABCs, just a few more highlights:

Long Beach, where the bridge supplies arrived 22 minutes before game time . . . Birmingham, where the nearest restaurant was 193 blocks away . . . Pittsburgh, where the union forklift driver and Martin played chicken . . . New York, where 1200 teenage model wannabes stood between Martin and the loading dock. And now, St. Louis, where it all ends.

Martin has made many contributions to NABC operations. Many of them go unnoticed by the players—until they think of how things used to be. Martin has been a leader, a mentor and an inspiration to all Services guys who have had the honor to work with him.

Thank you, Martin. You are the greatest! The Insider, and all of us, will miss you anytime we see a truck full of card tables pulling into a hotel loading dock.

District 8 players mourned the loss of one of the leading and most popular players with the death of Thomas Edward (Ed) Schultz of Chesterfield MO. Ed passed away in January 2009, 10 days after his 60th birthday.

Originally from Beardstown IL, Ed graduated from the University of Illinois and played on the Fighting Illini football team. He worked as a real estate agent in Springfield IL before moving to St. Louis, where he and his wife, Beth, worked together as mortgage brokers.

Ed was an avid fan of Fighting Illini sports and was especially proud of his collection of Illini posters and memorabilia, which filled his family room and memorialized his beloved Chief Illiniwek.

Ed also had a great fondness for animals, his rose garden, good books (one of his favorite authors was Ayn Rand) and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. He was a longtime supporter and volunteer worker for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the Wright home at Taliesin (Wisconsin) and the Dana-Thomas House in Springfield IL.

After his friends and family, Ed’s greatest love was the game of bridge. He was always ready to play anywhere, any time, and he

earned numerous regional wins and overall places in national events. He played often in local clubs and tournaments with partners of all skill levels. He ended his career with around 7300 masterpoints, just a few hundred shy of Emerald Life Master status. Although he never won the national championship he aspired to, the title surely would have come if he had more opportunities.

Ed endured many surgeries and treatment regimens during his illness, and through it all, he amazed everyone with his energy and upbeat attitude.

In March 2007, four days after brain surgery, he played almost every day at the St. Louis NABC. A month before he died, he traveled to the Holiday Regional in Kansas City and won a four-session knockout teams. Two weeks later, he played in the St. Charles MO sectional with his favorite partner, Mark Kessler, and placed second in the knockout teams. At the sectional, he was honored as the St. Louis 2008 Player of the Year for winning the most masterpoints at Unit tournaments.
