ACCC anti QF/SAA pact THE Australian Competition andConsumer Commission has issued aformal submission opposing thecontinued code sharingarrangements between Qantasand South African Airways on theSouth Africa route. The International Air ServicesCommission is considering anapplication from the carriers forthe continuation of the currentauthorisations for SYD-JNB foranother two years (TD 29 Jun). The ACCC submission to theIASC probe says the “increase inthe capacity on the route hasaltered the competitive dynamicsin such a way that the need forthe code sharing arrangementsbetween Qantas and SAA is likelyto have diminished.” The previous IASC decisionauthorising the code sharing wasbased on an assumption that VAustralia would introduce fiveservices per week betweenSydney and Johannesburg, indirect competition with the QF/SA
codeshare. However V Australia has insteadbegun offering two weekly flightsfrom Melbourne to Johannesburg, and as a result the ACCC saysthere “appears to be potential forSAA to enter the Sydney marketsegment in its own right”. Qantas plans to add a seventhweekly service to South Africafrom Sydney in Sep, and with VAustralia also adding a third flightfrom Dec and having rights fortwo more frequencies, the ACCCsays that “the new capacityallocations have gone some way toimproving the level ofcompetition on the route.” The ACCC also maintains thatthird country carriers offeringone-stop services on the routeprovide only limited competitionbecause of longer travel times. MEANWHILE Victoria Tourismalso lodged a submission to theIASC enquiry, saying that it’sconcerned that any extension ofthe code share agreement mayinhibit the future development ofSouth African routes out ofMelbourne by either QF or SAA. “Considering that Melbourne isAustralia’s second largest city andits population is growing fasterthan Sydney’s it is important thatQantas and SAA do not overlookthe importance of developing theSouth Africa-Melbourne route,”said Robert O’Brien, director ofAviation and Tourism InvestmentAttraction at Tourism Victoria.

THERE may be an interestingtwist in the Air Berlin move intothe oneworld alliance (TDyesterday), according to RichardFroggatt who formerly headed upthe Australian online operationsof Austrian Airlines. Writing from his new home inthe Maldives, Froggatt pointedout yesterday that Air Berlin isalso a significant shareholder inthe ‘Fly Niki’ airline owned byformer racing driver Niki Lauda. Lauda started Fly Niki after OSbought him out some years ago,and if his carrier becomes part ofoneworld as a result of the AirBerlin deal it means that Laudawould be one of the very fewowner operators who have beena member of both the StarAlliance and oneworld.

oneworld growth THE confirmation of Germancarrier Air Berlin as a member-elect of the oneworld alliance (TDyesterday) will add almost 75gateways to the oneworld map. At a media conferenceovernight the alliance said AirBerlin was expected to formallyjoin in early 2012, just before theopening of the new BerlinBrandenburg International Airport. The pact will see loyaltyprogram members of oneworldcarriers, including Qantasfrequent flyers, able to earn andredeem points on Air Berlin. Air Berlin already flies to anumber of oneworld hubs LosAngeles, Helsinki, Madrid, NewYork, Bangkok, Miami and Moscow.
