Good News x 2!
As you will know from my piece in the June Newsletter we had applied for £1,000 from Yorkshire Coast Homes’ Your Choice Your Vote 2015 funding scheme to enable us to offer three sessions of Accessible Cycling as part of our ‘Befriending through Sport’ project. Well, a nervous Kelly and Sally attended the results event on 11
th
June – along with other local groups – to hear that we had been successful.
A week later as we were digesting that news and starting to arrange the cycling sessions, we got the news that we had been awarded £1,000 towards accessible cycling from Persimmon Community Champions, again for three sessions. When we held our Sports Taster Day back in March the accessible cycling was

incredibly successful. Unfortunately, the cost of hiring the bikes and the expertise to show people how to use them was too expensive for us to include in our original funding application, but we remained determined that cycling should be part of the project; and now we can, and twice as much as we’d hoped.
So where do you come in? We would really encourage you to have a go. Anyone can participate and it is tremendous fun. Please contact Kelly or Sally at the DAG office.
You are also, of course, welcome to try any of the sports in this project which aims to bring people together to make friends, and to just enjoy taking part. Maybe cricket is your thing, or sailing. Again, please give Kelly or Sally a call. We are trying to get funding to continue this project, but if it finishes at the end of September please don’t be saying “I wish I’d tried that”.
On a more sombre note, details of the Government’s proposed changes to welfare spending, in order to make £12bn of cuts, are starting to leak out in advance of the July announcement. We would advise everyone to keep calm and wait for the actual proposals. Then we can help anyone who is affected by the changes: Mo in Whitby, and Paul in Ryedale, will provide advice, information and support.
Finally, Whitby DAG is on a shortlist of three to become Sainsbury’s Whitby Charity of the Year, - we need your votes! You can vote on line or in store - details on page 2.
Until the next time, when I hope that summer will have finally arrived. Richard

NHS Wheelchair Services
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson has been appointed to lead The Wheelchair Leadership Alliance. Representing wheelchair users, their families, carers and other organisations,
the Alliance is working to strengthen connections between key partners in order to help shape NHS wheelchair services into a system that works better for its users.
"The difficulty is there's not one NHS anymore. There are 209 devolved Clinical Commissioning Groups that can all run wheelchair services the way they want to. They're trying really hard but it's just not high enough up people's priorities”.
More information about the work of the Alliance is available on www.rightwheelchair.org.uk .You can contact the Alliance directly on [email protected]

Proposed Reduction to Bus Service Subsidy
North Yorkshire County Council is currently consulting on proposals to reduce the amount they spend subsidising local bus services to £1.5m every year from April 2016. They have put together proposals which are designed, they believe, to make the best use of the funding available to provide services which meet the day-to-day transport needs of local communities. In April 2014, NYCC implemented proposals to reduce the amount spent on subsidising bus services by £2m every year. This was part of a requirement to reduce overall expenditure by £92m by the end of March 2015. Further announcements by the government over future funding means NYCC now needs to find a further estimated £75.9m between 2015 and 2019. You can get full details about the proposals to reduce spending and take part in the consultation by visiting www.northyorks.gov.uk , ringing 01609 780780 or visiting any North Yorkshire Library. The closing date for responses is Friday 14th August 2015.
