Food Wise 2025 notes that
‘Research, Development and Innovation are key
drivers of competitiveness’ – Selection of some of
Food Wise RDI specific actions capture the five key themes
Agri-food research funding to prioritise
research which provides evidence base to quantify the economic, social and
environmental sustainability of Irish food production systems and to assess the vulnerability of these systems to climate
change
DAFM, through its research funding programmes (Stimulus, FIRM and
CoFoRD), to continue to support the development of
the new thought and technology leaders for the agri-food sector through
supporting agri-food Masters and PhD students on suitable scientific and
impactful research projectsPrioritise research to ensure the development of state of the art
methodologies to identify and assess the risks with biological and chemical
contamination of food and develop the controls to mitigate against these risks
At producer level prioritise research and innovation
investment in processes and technologies which improve
productivity and sustainability of production
Competitive Research Funding Programmes
Food
Forest
Agriculture
Three funding streams but essentially oneSingle programme with three inter-linked parts:
FoodPrimary funding mechanism for institutional food research Focus on Innovation, product development, safety, processing, functional ingredients, health and nutrition.
AgricultureSupport sustainably competitive agricultural practices & policiesFocus on modern animal / plant biosciences, agri-environment/sustainability, safety, agri-economics & finance.
ForestSupport forest policy, sustainable forest management, use of forest products and provision of public goods.

Key Features of DAFM Progs.
• ‘Public Good’ …. but industry welcome/required
• Collaboration … inter-institutional/disciplinary …. incrementally mandatory as project scale/cost grows
• Responsible ….. Ethics, access, gender, environment
• Types of Research:
• Knowledge e.g. evidence for policy; build/maintain human scientific capital for academia, govt., industry
• Tech. development for practice improvement on farms/forests & in food factories
• Societal benefit: Food safety, human nutrition, etc.
• Mainly focused on applied/pre-competitive; Low TRL
