Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie; et dimitte nobis debita nostra, Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris; et ne nos inducat in tentationem; sed libera nos a Malo.- Matthew 6:913Texts,TranslationsandNotes Texts,Translationsand Texts,TranslationsandTranslation:Our Father who is in heaven: hallowed be Your name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done, on earth as in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. - sung in Latin - Matthew 6:913Into Temptation: a measuring of all things good or ungood.Into Temptation is a program that Cantus has been developing for over four years. It is with great pleasure that we present it for you here tonight. Te hallmark of all Cantus concerts is our willingness to sing every kind of music and tie seemingly disparate musical forms together into a cohesive theme and journey. It is our hope, for instance, that the works of Tomas Tallis can illuminate the music of Nick Cave and vice versa. On top of the deeper meanings we intend we also strive to put together a show that is beautifully sung and down-right entertaining. We hope tonights program is no exception.Into Temptation is a vocal exploration of good and evil. Tis program uses the Christian context as an expression of the greater human struggle with evil. We have taken as a point of departure, the words of the Lords Prayer as the realization of the evil we allow within our-selves (lead us not into temptation) and the evil that can attack us from outside (but deliver us from evil). Tonights musical journey shows what can happen when one wrong choice is madefrom evil from eviland we stray, if only for an instant, from the path of a moral life.We begin with works that address broad moral waywardness in 5 Ways to Kill a Man and Te Lamentations of Jeremiah. Ten we will hear how the fragility of life and love can turn to violence in Fair Daodils and Te Banks of the Ohio. Te Mercy Seat embodies the all-too-common delusion of justifying evil in the name of good, as well as punishment for our crimes. Te transformative power of contrition and repentance is presented in What I Have Done, a pairing of the familiar songs Amazing Grace and House of the Rising Sun. Finally and hopefully, we feel the possibility of forgiveness from those we hurt in Franz Biebls Ave Maria and Te 23rd Psalm (dedicated to my mother), a work that blends the familiar psalm with an ode to the life-giving love of our mothers. Putting together this rich program has been thought-provoking, satisfying and really fun.We hope you enjoy hearing it as much we love singing it.Texts,TranslationsandNotes Texts,Translationsand Texts,TranslationsandDaemon Irrepit Callidus Gyrgy Orbn(Hinshaw Music)Daemon irrepit callidus,Allicit cor honoribus.Daemon ponit fraudes inter laudes, cantus, saltus.Quid-quid amabile Daemon datCor Jesu minus aestimat.Caro venatur sensibus;sen sus adhaeret dapidus;Inescatur, impinguatur, dilatatur.Quid-quid amabile caro datCor Jesu minus aestimat.Ade mundorum milia,Mille millena gaudia;Cordis aestum non explebunt, non arcebuntQuid-quid amabile Totum datCor Jesu minus aestimat.5 Ways to Kill a Man Bob Chilcott(Oxford)Tere are many cumbersome ways to kill a man.You can make him carry a plank of woodto the top of a hill and nail him to it. To do thisproperly you require a crowd of peoplewearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloakto dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and oneman to hammer the nails home.Or you can take a length of steel, shaped and chased in a traditional way,and attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears. But for this you need white horses,English trees, men with bows and arrows,at least two ags, a prince, and acastle to hold your banquet in.Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the windallows, blow gas at him. But then you needa mile of mud sliced through with ditches, not to mention black boots, bomb craters,Translation:Te Demon sneaks expertlyTempting the honorable heart; He sets forth trickery amidst praise, song and dance. However amiably the Demon acts,It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.Te Flesh is tempted by sensuality;Gluttony clings to our senses; It overgrows, it encroaches, it stretches. However appealing the Flesh is,It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.Tough the Universe may conferTousands upon thousands of praises,Tey neither fulll nor put out the desire of the heart. However appealing the whole Universe is,It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.- sung in Latinmore mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songsand some round hats made of steel. In an age of aeroplanes, you may ymiles above your victim and dispose of him bypressing one small switch. Ethan Sperry(Earthsongs)I am entirely devoted to you, my love; Please, my love, hear my plea.I hope to be with you, my love; I dont have any peace of mind, love.-sung in UrduRamkali refers to an Indian raga or scale upon which this Classical Indian love song is based. Te melody follows an unusual Indian scale which is perfectly symmetrical, unlike the major or minor scales. Tis arrangement of Ramkali follows a Classical Indian form beginning with an allap section, in which an improvised melody presents the tones of the scale over a dron-ing open fth. Tis is followed by two verses of the love-song melody each introduced by solokattu, a pattern of antiphonal Indian vocal percussion syllables.- Ethan SperryLast Letter Home Lee Hoiby(Schott)Army Pfc.
