I n troduct ion

I n 1991, the Counci l of the W or ld Feder at ion of Ch i ropr act ic (W FC) resolved that i t would create the W FC H onor Awards as the h ighest honor i t had in i ts power to bestow. T he awards recogn ize excep t ional and d ist ingu ished ser v ices wh ich have advanced the in ter nat ional growth and accep tance of the ch i ropr act ic p rofession .

T he f i r st r ecip ien ts of the awards were H enr ich Buchbinder, W i l l iam Ki r kaldy -W i l l i s and D onald Suther land. I n total , on ly 29 ind iv iduals have been honored by the W FC in th is way.

At the W FC's 13th Bienn ial Congress, held in 20 15 in Athens, Greece, i t was deter m ined that hencefor th the W FC H onor Awards would be renam ed the W FC D avid Chapm an-Sm i th H onor Awards in recogn i t ion of M r D avid Chapm an-Sm i th , who ser ved as Secretar y -Gener al of the W FC between 1988 and 20 15.

D avid Chapm an-Sm i th

D avid Chapm an-Sm i th qual i f ied w i th a Bachelor of L aws w i th H onour s (L L .B H ons) degree f rom the Un iver si ty of Auck land, N ew Z ealand, in 1972. Fol low ing gr aduat ion , he p r act iced civ i l and com m ercial law, f r om 1978 as a l i t igat ion par tner in H olm den , H or rocks & Co.. I n that year he becam e involved w i th the ch i ropr act ic p rofession , hav ing been appoin ted legal counsel to the N ew Z ealand Ch i ropr act ic Associat ion before the N ew Z ealand Com m ission of I nqu i r y in to Ch i ropr act ic 1978-79.

I n 1982, M r Chapm an-Sm i th took a two year per iod of leave f rom h is law par tner sh ip to ser ve as a legal consu l tan t for the O n tar io Ch i ropr act ic Associat ion in Canada dur ing a m ajor per iod of heal th p rofessions' legislat ion . Subsequen t ly, he rem ained in Canada, requal i f y ing in law in the Prov ince of O n tar io in 1989 and ser v ing as a legal and p rofessional consu l tan t to ch i ropr act ic associat ions in ter nat ional ly.

M r Chapm an-Sm i th was instr um en tal in the for m at ion of the W or ld Feder at ion of Ch i ropr act ic in 1987 and ser ved as i ts Secretar y -Gener al f r om that t im e un t i l 20 15.

Between 1986 and 20 16 he was the ed i tor and publ isher of T he Chiropractic Report. H e has authored m any ar t i cles on the subject of ch i ropr act ic and is author of T he Chiropractic Profession: I ts Education Practice, Research and Future Direction (N CM IC Group, 20 0 0 ). W i th

D r Ger ard Clum , he was join t ed i tor of T he Global Advance of Chiropractic: T he World Federation of Chiropractic 1988-2013 (Ph i l l ips R, 20 15).

M r Chapm an-Sm i th ret i r ed f rom h is career w i th the ch i ropr act ic p rofession in 20 18. H e is m ar r ied to D r Si r a Bor ges, a ch i ropr actor and m edical doctor , has four adu l t ch i ld ren and th ree gr andch i ld ren . H e con t inues to l i ve in Toron to, Canada.

N om inat ions are inv i ted for the 20 19 W FC D avid Chapm an-Sm i th H onor Award . T hese awards w i l l be m ade at the gala banquet of the 15th Bienn ial W FC Congress, to be held M arch 23, 20 19 in Ber l in , Ger m any.

Please note that so f ar as is possible, per sons should be unaware that they have been nom inated for the W FC D avid Chapm an-Sm i th H onor Award .
