Born and Bred Staintonian Returns from Her AdventuresRemember me? You know, the girl who bothered you and caused havoc to all her fellowStaintonians? Yep that’s right. I’m sorry it’s taken so long for me to write to you all but after cominghome to the beautifully freezing rainy Lake District (well in comparison to Cambodia it’s beenfreezing!) life has been chaotic! I cannot believe I was there for a month, it absolutely flew by!Well I survived, the 45⁰C heat, the snakes, the scorpions, the monsoon rain, fellow camp ‘mates’ and(the dreaded) compost loos (yes they’re exactly what you’re thinking, but when you’re in a place aspoor as Cambodia, NOTHING can be wasted).Someone told me before I left to make sure I made this experience an ‘experience of a lifetime’, andit was - it truly was. We really did make a difference, that in itself was rewarding.My favourite experience was teaching a class of about 30, 12 year olds basic English and maths. Thechildren were so eager to learn - so appreciative. We also started farming projects that the localcommunities could carry on. We also were based at the local school(s), providing accommodationfor the teachers to stay in.Cambodia is such an amazing thrilling place; it’s so different to where we live. I can’t quite believeI’ve been away. When I was away I got a bit of a culture shock. I realised that these people were insuch grave need of help. Their country’s dark past hasn’t left them yet.Camps international helped, Keswick School helped, I helped.I just wanted to thank you for your support and help. The help from Stainton was huge, everybody

was so generous. Thank you for your support. Thank you for making this opportunity possible. Love Esther Moffat

Rural Residents - reduced water bills?A resident in rural South Lakeland hasmanaged to reduce his water bill.He realised that he had been charged byUnited Utilities for surface water drainage,despite the fact that surface water from hisproperty does not drain into the seweragenetwork.Since 1997, the charge for sewerage servicesfrom the water company has been split, suchthat there are separate charges for theseparate services such as foul drainage,surface water drainage and highwaydrainage.However, United Utilities has recognised thatresidents whose properties do not drainsurface water into the sewerage networkshould not be eligible for the charge relatingto this. The resident in question has receiveda compensatory payment from UnitedUtilities, and has had his bill adjustedaccordingly.It is likely that many other residents in ruralvillages may have been paying for surfacewater drainage when they should not havebeen, and may thus be entitled for areduction in their bill. So check your bills andcheck your drainage.

Traffic throughNewbiggin

Late last year the operators ofthe recycling centre at Fluscoapplied for an extension to theexpiry date of their planningpermission. The parish counciltook the opportunity to againraise with the County Councilthe issue of traffic accessingthe centre through Newbiggin. Measuresto minimize traffic flow had been part ofthe original 2005 application, but werenever implemented.As a result the site operators have nowdrawn up a plan as follows :-● operators of HGVs using the site are

to instruct their drivers to avoidNewbiggin, instead using the Aldbyjunction;

● the sign on the west-bound A66 atthe Stainton/Newbiggin junction will be modified to read “Recycling Centre, Flusco Landfill,”directing traffic onwards to the Aldby junction (at present the sign only directs traffic to thelandfill site, and does not mention the recycling centre);

● a sign has been erected at the exit to the Recycling Centre encouraging users to turn left out ofthe site instead of right into Newbiggin;

● CCCs and EDC’ s Recycling Centre web-pages will be modified to omit the address of the site as‘Newbiggin,’ to ask users to avoid Newbiggin, and to provide a preferred route map to the Aldbyjunction (both have already made the changes.)

None of these measures have any legal status, and will depend on the goodwill of users of the recyclingcentre. However, it is hoped this will result a reduction in the recycling traffic through the village. Itis expected that most of these measures will be in place within the next three months, although theA66 signs may take longer as they have to be agreed with the Highways Agency.

Stainton Methodist ChurchIt was standing room only at our VillageCarol Concert on Monday 30th Novemberwhich was led by the choir of StaintonSchool. The concert started in a verytraditional manner with the first verse ofOnce in Royal David’s City being beautifullysung as a solo by Peter Stewart, without anywarning that he was going to be asked to doso. This solo set the scene so well for a mostenjoyable evening of readings and carols bythe young people from the school, led by MrsMillidge and Mrs Todd. This is the secondtime that these young people haveentertained us and we cannot wait for theirnext visit. A retiring collection at the end ofthe concert raised £115 for MacmillanCancer Support, the charity chosen by thechildren themselves.Our Advent celebrations continued onSaturday 5th December with our ChristmasFair, where coffee and mince pies wereserved to all those brave souls who hadignored all the weather warnings to stay athome. Despite that weather and the ratherlarge lake that had formed outside of thechurch a further £326 was raised forMacmillan Cancer Support.On Sunday 13th December at 10.00am 39adults and 11 children joined together atStainton School for the annual carol serviceof the Café Church, a family service which isheld on the second Sunday of each month atthe school. The children had been invited tocome along dressed as their favouritenativity character and with the help of TraceyCooke and the hindrance of a very grumpyinnkeeper, acted out the Christmas story.On the following Wednesday evening wejoined with our friends from Dacre Church tosing carols around the village and then on theSunday before Christmas we returned to ourhome church which was once again full forour traditional carol service led by ourminister Rev. Tim Cooke, followed by coffee

with traditional Christmas treats.

As we enter the New Year we are delighted to reportthat we have appointed Tracey Cooke as a part-timeoutreach worker. Tracey has already become afamiliar figure in the school and we feel that she hasa lot to offer as we seek to explore how, as a church,we can further serve the needs of our localcommunity.Every Wednesday during Lent we will be serving aLent Lunch in the church. For those who wish to joinus for a short period of reflection before the lunchbegins, this will begin at 11.30am and be led by Tim.The actual lunch, consisting of homemade soup andcrusty bread, followed by tea and coffee, will beserved between 12 noon and 2.00pm so please feelfree to drop in at any time. All money raised will bedonated to Christian Aid.Our monthly coffee mornings continue on the firstWednesday of each month between 10.00am andnoon, so please drop in for a chat and to be temptedby some of the goodies on sale. Help will also beavailable on these occasions for those strugglingwith their new iPad or computer. Then on thesecond Sunday of every month, together with ourfriends from Dacre Church, we hold all-age, cafestyle service at Stainton School, where church ispresented in a fun & refreshing way!May we take this opportunity of wishing all readersevery blessing for 2016.

Is your house name/number obvious tothe Emergency Response Teams?

We always hope it won’t happen to us, butin the event of an emergency how easy is itfor the emergency services to find yourhouse? For example, is the house name ornumber visible or is it obscured by an opengate or overgrown trees/bushes or simplyfaded or fallen off? Even when a post codeis given, valuable time can be lost in tryingto locate a house. As Community FirstResponders we sometimes struggle to findproperties, particularly in the dark, and weurge you to take a look at your house froma stranger’s point of view, and see if yourhouse name or number is in an obvious andclear position.If deeply rural, register on ‘Point Taken’ -http://www.nwas.nhs.uk/talking-to-us/point-taken/#.VreP5FiLS1s

Please get in touch tosuggest opportunities or to raise concerns -●The floods affected the south end of theParish and homes in Stainton andNewbiggin, and the collapse of PooleyBridge brought phone and internetblackout to homes and businesses aroundSoulby and Dacre. A group hasformed in Newbiggin to look at ways toprevent future floods caused by risinggroundwater. Please ensure if your househas been flooded that you access anysupport available from Eden DC and others- for example - the immediate £500 grant,and the £5000 grant for ensuring futureflood resilience - look on www.eden.gov.uk● The footway light has been repaired nearthe A66 underpass in Stainton, and the newlights around the parish are slowly gettingconnected by NWElectricity.●I raised concerns about the state of someof the traditional fingerposts so theClickham post should be repainted soon,and others near Greystoke Gill are on thelist for repair/repainting.
