Dutch Design Hotel Artemis is a design and art

hotel, inspired by the purity and originality of Dutch

Design. Dutch Design. Dutch Design is known for its

strong, original shapes and forms, the pragmatic

approach and the use of new materials. Dutch

artists love to make art with a wink, which leads to

positive inspiration and a burst of liveliness.

From the lobby to the rooms, Dutch design is evident

in the hotel in all shapes and forms. The geometric

influences of the well known Dutch architects and

artists Mondriaan, Dudok and Rietveld can be seen

in the architecture of the building and the main

spaces.

Throughout the hotel you will find privately owned

design furniture of contemporary Dutch designers

such as Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek and

Richard Hutten. This design together with specially

commissioned artworks, forms the Artemis Art &

Design private collection.

Dutch Design Hotel Artemis is een design en

kunst hotel, geïnspireerd door de puurheid en

originaliteit van Nederlands ontwerp. Nederlands

design is bekend om zijn sterke, originele vormen,

de pragmatische benadering en het gebruik van

nieuwe materialen. Nederlandse kunstenaars

maken graag kunst met een knipoog, dat leidt

Van de lobby tot aan de kamers zijn tekenen van

Nederlands design te vinden in allerlei vormen

en manieren. De geometrische invloeden van de

bekende Nederlandse architecten en kunstenaars

architectuur van het gebouw en de algemene

ruimten.

Door het gehele hotel vindt u meubelontwerpen

van hedendaagse Nederlandse designers, zoals

Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek en Richard Hutten.

Deze ontwerpen samen met een aantal speciaal

opgedragen kunstwerken vormt de Artemis vaste

design & kunstcollectie.

The D&A; Design & ARTemis exhibition is a unique

concept where each three months the ground floor

of the hotel is changed to a surprisingly different

setting. Each exhibition has its own theme. Dutch

Design Hotel Artemis provides a platform for both

beginning and established artists and designers

to show their work to an all round public. Beside

the art, guests can enjoy tasty food and drinks in

restaurant ‘De Stijl’.

‘AMSterdamcelebrates 2013’Amsterdam viert groot feest in 2013 en dus hebben

de Amsterdammers, maar zeker ook de bezoekers

van de stad, zich opgemaakt voor dit feestelijke jaar.

Het jaar 2013 staat namelijk in het teken van diverse

fantastische mijlpalen in Amsterdam. Zo zijn het

gerenoveerde Rijksmuseum en Van Gogh Museum

dit jaar heropend, viert Artis haar 175-jarige bestaan,

bestaan de Amsterdamse grachten maar liefst 400

jaar, viert Amsterdam de 125e verjaardag van Het

Concertgebouw en zijn de nieuwe koning en koningin

ingehuldigd in Amsterdam. Dit is maar een kleine

selectie van wat Amsterdam u in 2013 aan bijzondere

evenementen te bieden heeft.

De stad wordt als 24-uurs bestemming geopend en

er zijn veel speciale tentoonstellingen, concerten en

festivals, waaronder ook de expositie ‘AMSterdam

Celebrates 2013’ in Dutch Design Hotel Artemis.

Deze expositie is een ode aan de stad Amsterdam

tijdens dit jubileumjaar.

De expositie toont een rijke variatie Dutch

design & kunst met een knipoog naar het thema

‘AMSterdam Celebrates 2013’ gecombineerd met

een oer-Hollandse touch. Van Koninklijke jubileum

aardewerk ontwerpen, designkasten en raam- en

muurstickers van Amsterdamse grachtenpandjes,

een echte tulp tas, schilderkunst, fotografie tot

toegepaste kunst.

Amsterdam celebrates big party in 2013 and so

the people of Amsterdam, but certainly also the

city visitors are ready for this festive year. The year

2013 is dedicated to many magnificent milestones

in Amsterdam. For example the Rijksmuseum and

Van Gogh Museum are reopened this year, the Artis

Royal Zoo celebrates her 175-years of existence, the

Amsterdam canals celebrate their 400th anniversary,

the Concertgebouw their 125th anniversary and the

succession to the throne of the new king and queen

took place in Amsterdam. This is only a small selection

of the unique events which Amsterdam has to offer you

in 2013.

The city is opened up as 24 hours destination and there

are many special exhibitions, concerts and festivals,

among which the exhibition ‘AMSterdam Celebrates

2013’ in Dutch Design Hotel Artemis. This exhibition is

an ode to the city of Amsterdam in this jubilee year.

The exhibition shows a varied collection Dutch design

& art with a wink to the theme ‘AMSterdam Celebrates

2013’ combined with a pure Dutch touch. From Royal

jubilee earthenware designs, designcupboards and

window- and wallstickers of Amsterdam canal houses,

a tulip bag, paintings, photography to applied art.

Tomorrow’s design since 1610Royal Goedewaagen is one of the oldest remained

ceramics factories in the Netherlands. With a

history of almost 400 year the company was able to

maintain by a continues process of innovation and to

cooperate with artists and designers.

Royal Goedewaagen manufactures ceramics

with a passion. Passion for innovative designs,

traditional forms and detailed craftsmanship. In

essence, a passion for stylish products from high

quality ceramics in all its extraordinary forms. The

production and decoration of all Royal Goedewaagen

products is all in-house.

During the exposition at the Dutch Design Hotel

Artemis, Royal Goedewaagen presents its highlights

of 2013; an overview of ceramic gifts presenting

the celebration of 400 years Canal District, 125th

anniversary of the Concertgebouw and 200 years of

Orange monarchy.

The collection includes designs by Robert

Bronwasser, Paul Baars, Marijke Koster and Sander

Alblas.

History of Royal GoedewaagenIn 1610 in the city of Gouda, the foundations for

the Goedewaagen factory were laid. The company

started with the manufacturing of simple and

affordable items for daily use.

In the following centuries, The Netherlands grew

to be one of the main tobacco trading nations and

Royal Goedewaagen developed into the largest pipe

manufacturer in The Netherlands by sharp market

thinking and innovative designs.

In 1984 Royal Goedewaagen relocated its production

facilities from Gouda to Nieuw Buinen, the North

East of Holland and opened in 1989 its very own

ceramic museum.


Since 1900 Royal Goedewaagen started making

historical buildings and Amsterdam Canal Houses

in small ceramic miniatures. These typical Dutch

houses are well known collector items throughout

the world. In 2013 the Canals of Amsterdam celebrate

their 400 years existence of the Amsterdam Canal

Houses. Royal Goedewaagen presents therefore

its unique series of canal house miniatures for

the discriminating collector. The unique series,

composed of Keizersgracht, Herengracht, Singel

and Prinsengracht collections, hand painted in the

Netherlands by skilled craftsmen. The miniature of

the Concertgebouw is specially made for the 125th

anniversary of the Concertgebouw.

Royal Goedewaagen makes Delft Blue vases

and tiles since 1610. The Tuliptile Vase designed

by Robert Bronwasser is a combination of two

traditional Delft Blue products; a tulip vase and a

Delft Blue tile. The Tuliptile Vase exists out of two

tiles which gains its form and stability by fitting

them in each other. Especially for Holland America

Line, Royal Goedewaagen combined the 400 years

existence of the Amsterdam Canal Houses and

the Tuliptile Vase in one single new Design: The

Amsterdam Tuliptile.

In addition to the Holland Vase, Dutch designer

Sander Alblas designed the Holland Box; a gift

box in the shape of Holland in which typical Dutch

sweets as well as tulip bulbs can be presented. The

Holland Box is produced by Royal Goedewaagen and

available in the nation’s colors; Red, White, Blue

and Orange. The lid of the box lends itself excellent

for figurative decorations.

The original 17th century tulip vases were decorated

with Blue Delft and Chinese decorations. The Four

Tulips Vase designed by Amsterdam’s designer Paul

Baars, is a modern tulip vase, which exists of four

piles interlinked to each other. The shape of the vase

lends itself excellent for figurative and historical

decorations. The Four Tulips Vase – Royal Dutch;

the first edition of the vase is specially designed for

the throne views and the celebration of 200 years

orange monarchy.

Thinking of Holland is thinking of flowers. The

Holland Vase is designed by Dutch designer Sander

Alblas is a perfect symbol of this typical Dutch

product. The vase is in the shape of Holland and

produced by Royal Goedewaagen in the nation’s

colors; Red, White, Blue and Orange. A special

edition decorated with the crown of the Netherlands

is designed for the throne views.

In honor of 200 years Orange monarchy Royal

Goedewaagen manufactured special Royal figurative

clay pipes. These handmade figurative clay pipes

have the images of former Queen Juliana, Queen

Beatrix and the new King Willem Alexander, all pre

designed by Dutch sculptor Roy Greve. The royal

clay pipes are in line with the centuries tradition

to make figurative pipes of the images of former

Dutch kings and queens. The Royal figurative pipes

are distributed by Dutch wooden pipe producer E.

Royal Goedewaagen is the only ceramics factory

in the Netherlands that has released a special

Royal tableware, in honour of the succession to

the throne. For the design of the Royal tableware

the old moulds of the classic Oxford Blue Delft

tableware from 1922 were chosen to undergo a

makeover. Royal Goedewaagen inhouse designer

Marijke Koster choose to redecorate this classic

Blue Delft tableware with a matt creamy finishing

glazing on the outside and an orange shiny glazing

on the inside. The finishing touch is the golden

crown which is decorated on every item of the set.

The set consists of six cups and saucers, a teapot

and a sugar bowl.

Holland in Huis is het geesteskind van Lonneke

Voets (38) en Renate van Stiphout (38) uit ’s-

Hertogenbosch en is opgericht in 2009. Holland

in Huis ontwerpt en produceert ongewoon

oer-Hollandse interieurstickers in eigen atelier.

Molens, klompen, grachtenpandjes en tegeltjes;

Lonneke werkt naast Holland in Huis als (online)

marketeer bij de Bossche Schouwburg Theater

aan de Parade. Renate is parttime vormgeefster

bij Verwegen • Van de Gevel • Suijderdorp

communicatie, een groot reclamebureau in

Veghel. Daarnaast werkt ze als freelance

vormgever onder de naam PuurStipDesign.

Holland in Huis is ontstaan uit liefde voor design,

kleur en Holland.

Voets (38) and Renate van Stiphout (38) from ‘s-

(online) marketer at a local theatre. Renate works

as a part-time designer at Verwegen • Van de

Gevel • Suijderdorp communication, an advertising

agency in Veghel. She also works as a freelance

designer under the name PuurStipDesign. Holland

in Huis was born out of passion for design, colours

and Holland.

Marie-Louise Groot Kormelink Hoewel ze al sinds haar jeugd een voorliefde voor

tekenen en ontwerpen heeft koos Marie-Louise

Groot Kormelink (1963) voor een opleiding als

beroepskeuzeadviseur. Ze werkte jarenlang

in de commerciële arbeidsbemiddeling en het

loopbaanadvies. Het idee voor de serie Kast van

een Huis ontstond toen ze op zoek was naar

meubelen voor haar eigen kinderen. Datgene

wat ze zocht, was niet te vinden binnen de

meubelbranche, dus vatte ze het idee op zelf iets

te ontwerpen. Echter, pas toen haar kinderen

groter werden besloot ze haar ideeën voor de

kastenserie uit te werken en in productie te

nemen. Inmiddels wordt de serie Amsterdam

in 18 landen verkocht en is opgenomen in het

Philadelphia museum of Art als een van de

betere ontwerpen voor kinderen van de afgelopen

decennia.

Marie-Louise Groot Kormelink Although she loved drawing and design since she

was a kid, Marie-Louise (1963) choose for a study

in profession- and career-counselling. She worked

in commercial career-counselling for many years.

She came up with the idea of designing her own

cabinets, when she was not able to find furniture for

her children that she liked and that could meet her

standards. However, it was only when her children

became older, she decided to work out her ideas for

the cabinet series and take into production. In 2004

the designs were first manufactured. Nowadays

the Amsterdam series is sold in 18 countries and is

exposed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as one

of the best designs for children in the past decades.

that exports the brand: Kast van een Huis.

The company is founded and owned by the designer

Marie-Louise Groot Kormelink.

According to the ideas of the founder the design

collection has to meet the following criteria:

both children and adults. The appearance of the

furniture has to bring a smile on your face. The

cabinets should be multifunctional, adjustable and

form a series. You can even create an entire street!

De serie Amsterdam van de Kast van een Huis

collectie bestaat o.a. uit drie kastmodellen

geïnspireerd op grachtenpanden zoals die o.a.

te zien zijn in de Amsterdamse binnenstad. Het

Eigenaresse en ontwerpster Linde van der Poel

(1979) is afgestudeerd aan de ArtEZ - hogeschool

voor de kunsten in Enschede in 2002. Een paar

jaar later richtte ze op het prachtige eiland Bali

haar eigen bedrijf by-Lin® op. Vanaf het begin

spelen hergebruikte materialen en aandacht voor

de omgeving een grote rol in haar ontwerpen.

Owner and designer Linde Van der Poel (1979)

graduated from the ArtEZ art school in Enschede

The Netherlands in 2002. A few years later she set

up her own design studio on the beautiful island

Bali. From the very start, recycled materials and

consciousness for the environment have played a

major role in her designs. Meticulously crafted and

detailed, her complex and creative designs take

their forms from nature.

Van der Poel’s source of inspiration lies in the

wilderness of Bali, particularly in the shapes of

leaves and flowers found there. Together with her

team, consisting of local artisans, she designs

and produces high quality and exclusive leather

handbags.

William Van de Velde noemt zichzelf geen

kunstenaar, maar een kunsteBOER. KunsteBOER,

omdat hij echt ‘de boer op gaat’, en zijn werk

onder de mensen brengt. Op kunstmarkten krijg

hij live reacties op zijn werk en staat hij dichtbij de

mensen. Hij maakt stalen figuratieve beelden van

verweerde voorwerpen, die hij verzamelt tijdens

zijn reizen door stad en land. William: ‘Kunst is

overal aanwezig, je moet het alleen maar zien.’

Het lukt hem goed een ziel te geven aan die

oude afgedankte voorwerpen. De combinatie van

roest en verfresten geeft aan zijn beelden een

authentieke uitstraling.

Een ander deel van zijn werk bestaat uit toegepaste

kunst; hij wil zijn beelden zó aanpassen, dat ze

een functie krijgen, en niet andersom. Op die

manier weet hij de kunst toegankelijk te maken

voor een groter publiek. ‘Wat ik zo leuk vind aan

hem, is zijn aardse stijl van benadering. Hij heeft

een frisse kijk op vorm en functie’, aldus een

klant. In toekomst zullen we vaker beelden van

kunsteBOER in publieke ruimten zien. Zo hoopt

William van de Velde nog makkelijker contact te

The Dutch word ‘boer’ means farmer. William

calls himself not an artist, but a KunsteBOER: an

‘ArtFARMER’, William Van de Velde travels around

as a merchant, showing his work from village to city,

rural to metropolitan. The ArtFARMER likes selling

homemade products directly to the client. He seeks

the live experience of watching the viewer react to

his work. His work can be figurative, composed of

weathered objects, collected during travels from

within his hometown or overseas. William: ‘The

presence of art is everywhere, all one has to do

is see it’ He manages to revive the lost souls of

discarded objects. The combination of rust and flaky

paint generates an authentic vibe.

William also loves applied art; inventing new ways

to redesign his work for multiple uses, instead of

the other way around. In this way, his art becomes

more user-friendly to a wider audience. ‘What I like

about him most, is his down to earth approach. He

has a crisp view on form and function’, according to

a client. In time, we shall more often see work from

kunsteBOER in public areas. In this way William

hopes to keep making contact with the public.

Niek Bruynzeel woont en werkt in Amsterdam

en deed daar ook zijn opleiding schilderen en

grafiek aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. In zijn

olieverfschilderijen combineert hij landschap-

pelijke elementen met gedroomde sporen van

mens en dier. Daarnaast werkt hij al geruime tijd

aan een doorlopende serie potloodtekeningen

onder de naam ‘Dwaalgasten’ en maakt tevens

assemblages uit ‘gevonden’ materiaal. Qua sfeer

liggen deze in het verlengde van zijn tekeningen.

Voor deze technieken ontving hij in 2011 en 2012

een Palm Art Award vanuit Leipzig.

De tekeningen zijn gemaakt met een zachte

grafietstift op museumkarton met grove korrel. De

papierstructuur blijft goed zichtbaar waardoor het

geheel luchtig blijft. Menselijke figuren bewegen

zich in halfslaap tussen vissen en waterplanten.

Dromen zijn verre reizen en in dit specifieke geval

gekoppeld aan de natuur. Naast de tekeningen

zijn voor deze expositie een aantal olieverfschil-

derijen op verticale panelen gemaakt. Zij zijn

opgebouwd uit dunne transparante lagen om tot

een diepere ondergloed te komen. Ondanks het

gebruik van verschillende technieken zijn er qua

sfeer grote overeenkomsten tussen de werken.

Niek Bruynzeel lives and works in Amsterdam.

He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy

Amsterdam, specialised in paintings and graphics.

In his oil paintings, he combines elements of

landscape with dreamed traces of people and

animals.

Recently, his work has focused on a continuous

series of pencil drawings bearing the name

‘Vagrants’. He also creates sculptures from ‘lost

materials’, which are created in the same sentiment

as his drawings. Niek received a Leipzig Palm Art

Award for this work in 2011 en 2012.

The drawings are made with a soft graphite pencil

on museum-quality drawing paper with a coarse

grain. The texture of the paper is still clearly visible

whereby the work stays flighty. Human figures

move in a sleepy fashion between fish and water

plants. Dreams are far journeys and in this specific

case, connected to nature. For the exposition not

only drawings were made but also a number of oil

paintings on vertical panels. They are composed of

thin, transparent layers in order to create a deeper,

underlying glow. As far as the mood is concerned,

there are striking similarities in the way in which

he creates these effects.

Anita van de Weg schreef over zijn werk;

‘Tussen slapen en waken ligt een schemerig

landschap. Wij liepen door huizen, zaten in

kelders en kamers en hoorden namen met

verkeerde hoofden op. Dromen zijn verre reizen.

Met het eerste ochtendlicht is niet alleen het

nachtelijk duister verdwenen maar ook het kind

in ons, dat in wolken schapen ziet en feeërieke

glazen verschijningen. De dagelijkse tijd gaat

weer kloksgewijs; het ene volgt weer gewoon

op het andere en we reizen van A naar B. Niek’s

werken zijn wakende herinneringen aan plaatsen

en tijden die wij uit onze ogen hebben gewreven.’

Anita van de Weg wrote about his art;

‘Between sleep and awakening lies an obscure

landscape. We walk through houses, sit in

basements and rooms and hear names surmounted

by unmatching heads. Dreams are far journeys.

With the first light of morning not only the darkness

of the night disappears but also the child in us,

the child that discerns sheep-figures in cloud

formations and fairylike glassy appearances. The

time of day moves clockwise again; the one follows

the other in a natural way and we travel from A to B.

Niek’s artworks are wakeful recollections of places

and times which we had rubbed out of our eyes.’

New York Manhattan behoort tot een van de

meest aansprekende steden van de wereld en

vindt zijn oorsprong in een vroege nederzetting

van de Hollandse kolonisten in het begin van de

17e eeuw.

Toen werd zij Nieuw Amsterdam genoemd en

onlangs werd haar 400 jarig bestaan gevierd.

Nederlands kunstschilder Bert Slagt gaf in 2004

een eerste aanzet tot zijn thema keuze ‘Beautiful

Cities of the World’ met een impressie van

het beroemde Times Square NY. Uitgangspunt

was een abstract werk van een willekeurige

metropool. Inspiratie kreeg hij toen van het logo

op een Coca Cola blikje in zijn hand. Times Square

is een abstracte impressie geworden dat geheel

vanuit zijn verbeeldingskracht is opgetrokken. De

sfeer en uitstraling van deze metropool op het

doek is bepalend voor de aantrekkingskracht van

het schilderij.

New York Manhattan belongs to one of the most

appealing cities of the world and has its origins

in an early settlement of the Dutch settlers in

the early 17th century. Then it was called New

Amsterdam and recently its 400 year anniversary

was celebrated. The Dutch art painter Bert Slagt

gave the first step towards his theme choice in 2004

‘Beautiful Cities of the World’ with an impression of

the famous Times Square NY. Starting point was a

commissioned abstract work of any metropolis. At

the time he got inspiration from the logo on a Coca

Cola can in his hand. Times Square NY 1 became

rather a more abstract impression that entirely

arose from his imagination. Also in Times Square

NY 3 the atmosphere of the metropolis determines

the appeal of the painting. In this later version the

advertising billboards are figurative and detailed,

the overall art work remains an impression.

De uitvoering van de kleinere schilderijen

onder het thema ‘Beautiful Cities of the World’

kwam door het idee om ook meer betaalbare

kunstwerken te maken. Voor de Nederlandse

schilder Bert Slagt is het een uitdaging net zo

veel artistieke integriteit op een klein oppervlak

te creëren als op een groot doek. Voor hem is het

belangrijk dat zijn kunst positief esthetisch is,

zowel bekeken van een afstand als van dichtbij.

Bedenk wel dat de uitdaging ligt in het creëren

van een ‘groot’ miniatuur schilderij op impres-

sionistische wijze. Het lijkt op het reproduceren

van dezelfde onderwerpen in verschillende

maten, maar ieder origineel heeft absoluut zijn

eigen unieke eigenschappen en dezelfde look en

feel van het grotere werk. Betaalbare kunst in

Amsterdam!

The execution of the smaller paintings under the

theme ‘Beautiful Cities of the World’ was given birth

by the idea to produce affordable artwork. For the

Dutch painter Bert Slagt it formed a challenge to

create the same amount of artistic integrity on such

a small surface. To him it is important that his art is

aesthetically pleasing, both looked at from a certain

distance as well as from up close. Mind you, that the

difficulty lies in creating a miniature ‘large’ painting

in an impressionistic manner. Although it seems

like reproducing the same subjects in smaller sizes,

these originals show absolute unique features and

the same look and feel of the larger paintings.

They have been working together on different

Het project ‘Outside Living I’ draait om het idee

om woonkamers uit de jaren vijftig en zestig

buiten op aparte locaties na te bouwen. Deze

settings worden gedurende de nacht vastgelegd,

waarbij modellen, gestileerd volgens de mode

uit de jaren vijftig en zestig, scènes tussen man

en vrouw naspelen gebaseerd op de normen en

waarden uit genoemde tijdsperiode. Aangezien

het doel van dit project is om vragen bij de kijker

op te roepen, komt het geregeld voor dat de

gespeelde scènes het direct tegenovergestelde

voorstellen van wat men zou verwachten.

The project ‘Outside Living I’ revolves around the

idea of bringing living rooms from the fifties and

sixties back to life in an outdoor setting.

While this sounds interesting in itself already, the

photographers have chosen to shoot these images

during night time and thus creating an unique

atmosphere in the images. In these outdoor living

rooms the photographers portray typical stereotype

scenes between husbands and wife’s, that may have

occurred in the fifties and sixties. Since the whole

concept is about raising questions with the viewer,

the portrayed scenes sometimes are the exact

opposite of what one might expect.

Rembrandt als portretschilderTussen 1631 en 1635 heeft Rembrandt in

Uylenburghs werkplaats een groot aantal

portretten geschilderd. Door zijn ervaring als

historieschilder waren zijn portretten levendiger

dan die van de gespecialiseerde portretschil-

ders die tot dan de portretmarkt in Amsterdam

beheersten. Ze waren bijzonder omdat Rembrandt

de hoeveelheid details in de kleding beperkte

en de enigszins golvende contouren eenvoudig

hield. Zo zorgde hij ervoor dat de aandacht van

de beschouwer vooral naar het gezicht werd

geleid. Toch bleef zijn hart bij de historieschil-

derkunst. Overziet men Rembrandt’s gehele

oeuvre dan blijken de pieken in zijn activiteit als

portretschilder samen te vallen met periodes

waarin hij veel geld nodig had, bijvoorbeeld toen

hij in 1639 een duur huis kocht, en in en na 1652

rond zijn faillissement als gevolg van de Eerste

Engelse Oorlog.

Rembrandt as portrait painterFrom 1631 to 1635 Rembrandt painted a large

number of portraits in Uylenburgh’s workshop.

Because of his experience as a history painter, his

portraits were more alive than those done by the

specialized portrait painters who had dominated

the Amsterdam portrait market up till then. What

made them special was that, by restricting the

amount of costume details and keeping the slightly

undulating contours simple, Rembrandt ensured

that the beholder’s attention was mainly drawn to

the face. Yet at the heart he always remained first

and foremost a history painter. When one surveys

his entire oeuvre one sees that the peaks of his

activity as a portrait painter always coincided with

times when he was in serious need of money, e.g.

when he purchased an expensive house in 1639 and

again in and after 1652 when bankruptcy threatened

as a result of the First Anglo-Dutch War.

Een incompleet meesterwerkAan dit schilderij van Danae, die in haar luxueuze

gevangenis de op seks beluste oppergod Zeus in

de gedaante van een lichtbundel ontvangt, heeft

Rembrandt in twee fasen gewerkt. Zeven jaar

nadat hij het in 1636 voltooid had, schilderde hij

in ca. 1643 Danae en haar oude voedster opnieuw

in een andere stijl dan de rest van het schilderij.

Het werk was oorspronkelijk even groot als de

‘Blindmaking van Samson’, maar werd later aan

alle zijden afgesneden. Dankzij het onderzoek

van het schilderslinnen van de beide schilderijen

en vergelijking met een op de Danae gebaseerd

schilderij van een leerling van Rembrandt

(Ferdinand Bol) was het mogelijk een beeld te

krijgen van het schilderij in zijn oorspronkelijk

formaat en detaillering. Het grote, overgebleven

restant van het origineel was nog steeds een

van de allermooiste schilderijen ooit, tot het in

1985 door een maniak met een bijtende vloeistof

werd bespoten. Daardoor werd het verfoppervlak

–ondanks pogingen tot restauratie ervan- zo

zwaar verminkt dat het schilderij nu nog slechts

een schim van zichzelf is. Re:mbrandt All his

Paintings is bijzonder blij dat het hun mogelijk

is gemaakt een reproductie te tonen op ware

grootte van het schilderij, uit de tijd voordat het

verfoppervlak onherstelbaar beschadigd werd.

An incomplete masterpieceIn this painting Danae, locked up in her luxurious

prison, receives the lust-driven Zeus, the supreme

god, in the form of a beam of light. Rembrandt

worked on this painting in two phases.

Seven years after completing it in 1636, he painted

Danae and her old nurse in c. 1643 afresh in a

different style from the rest of the painting. The

work was originally the same size as the ‘The

blinding of Samson’ but was subsequently cut down

on all sides . As a result of research on the canvases

of both paintings and comparison with a painting by

one of Rembrandt’s pupils (Ferdinand Bol) it was

possible to get an idea of the painting in it’s original

form and detail.

The large surviving piece of the original was still one

of the most beautiful paintings ever when in 1985

it was sprayed with a corrosive liquid by a maniac.

Despite attempts at restoration, the surface was so

badly mutilated that the painting is today a mere

shadow of itself. We are particularly pleased that we

have been enabled to show a life size reproduction

of the painting from the time before the surface was

irreparably damaged.

A posthumous portrait of Saskia?This painting is indirectly based on the profile

portrait of Saskia (now in Kassel) on which

Rembrandt worked, with intervals, from 1633 to

Saskia’s death in 1642 Rembrandt had one of his

pupils make a copy of that portrait around 1652,

which is now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts

Antwerp. Around the same time Rembrandt sold

the original to an art-lover. The painting reproduced

here, long incorrectly known as ‘Hendrickje as

Flora’, must have been based on the Antwerp

copy and could perhaps have been intended as

a posthumous portrait of Saskia (as Flora, the

goddess of fertility). The last part of the painting is

in a very poor condition

Een postuum portret van Saskia?Dit schilderij is indirect gebaseerd op het

profielportret van Saskia, (nu tentoongesteld in

Kassel) waaraan Rembrandt met tussenpozen

van 1633 tot Saskia’s dood in 1642 gewerkt heeft.

Van dat portret heeft Rembrandt omstreeks 1652

door een van zijn leerlingen een kopie laten

schilderen die zich in het Museum voor Schone

Kunsten in Antwerpen bevindt. Het origineel

verkocht Rembrandt omstreeks die tijd aan een

kunstliefhebber. Het hier getoonde schilderij,

dat lange tijd ten onrechte de titel ‘Hendrickje

als Flora’ droeg, moet op de Antwerpse kopie

gebaseerd zijn en zou als postuum portret van

Saskia (als Flora, de godin van de vruchtbaarheid)

kunnen zijn bedoeld. Het linkergedeelte van het

schilderij verkeert in zeer slechte toestand.
