Executive Summary

The optiTruck project is developing ten innovation elements to optimise powertrain control

with the objective of reducing CO2 emissions by more than 20%. Other activities in Europe

and across the world have set similar targets.

In order to share approaches, results and to discuss common challenges with these

activities, the optiTruck project is building a Stakeholder Forum.

The first step in building this forum was to bring stakeholders together by organising a one

hour webinar to present current activities and discuss common challenges. optiTruck and

two other H2020 projects participated in the webinar:

IMPERIUM (IMplementation of Powertrain control for Economic, low Real driving emIssions

and fuel consUMption), http://www.imperium-project.eu/, coordinated by AVL

(Austria);

ORCA (Optimised Real-world Cost-Competitive Modular Hybrid Architecture for Heavy

Duty Vehicles); http://h2020-orca.eu/, coordinated by TNO (The Netherlands)

and one project from the US programme NEXTCAR:

VPRO (Vehicle Powertrain and Routing Co-Optimization); https://vpro.umn.edu,

coordinated by the University of Minnesota (USA)

This document presents the proceedings of the webinar, its preparation, results and all

presentations.

The main outcome from this first Stakeholder Forum event was the identification of the

following common challenges::

Predictive future, what data do we really need?

How important is Data Quality?

Do we have issues with Data Security?

How to assess the real impact of proposed solutions?

The discussion also looked at the relationship between powertrain control optimisation and

its impact on air quality. This will be one of the main topics, in addition to those listed

above, to be discussed at the physical Stakeholder Forum workshop meeting planned for

September 2018.

The webinar had 43 registered people and finally 30 participants from Europe and USA.

1. Introduction

Project objectives 1.1

The goal of optiTruck is to bring together the most advanced powertrain control and

intelligent transport system technologies in order to optimise global fuel consumption (a

20% reduction at least), as well as other energy sources and consumables, while achieving

Euro VI emission standards for heavy duty road haulage (40t).

In order to realise this overall objective, optiTruck will:

1. develop predictive intelligent modules based on predictive navigation and other

environmental data

2. develop software components to collect and integrate these different data sources

3. develop software for the fusion and the optimisation of engine calibration mapping

and powertrain control

4. develop demonstrators to be tested in real environment: i.e. trucks equipped with

real-time emission monitoring (kit) connected together with other sensors or data

sources to the powertrain control unit of the truck for further processing (data

fusion/predictive module) (to be in-line with Euro VI)

5. carry out real-world trials with two demonstrators:

a. One truck equipped with the current state-of-the-art techniques to collect

the fuel and other consumables consumption data to be used as a baseline;

b. One truck equipped with the proposed system to demonstrate on real roads

the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions while performing different

transport missions.

6. undertake validation and impact assessment to show the minimum 20% fuel

reduction

7. develop strategies for larger deployment of the proposed system within and beyond

the project

Purpose of this document 1.2

The ambition of the optiTruck project is to be the leading activity in the field of innovative

powertrain control solutions, especially those aimed at reducing fuel consumption and CO2

emissions as a result.

As part of Work Package 8 Task 8.4 "Engage with stakeholders and Liaison activities" the

project initiated contact with the main stakeholders as presented in deliverable D8.1

"Communication, Dissemination and Liaison Plan”.

This document presents the proceedings of the optiTruck Webinar, starting with the

creation of the Stakeholder Forum (Chap. 2), the organisation and proceedings (Chap. 3)

and the conclusion with next steps (Chap. 4).

Page 8: D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum · 2020. 4. 7. · D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum - v2.0-Final, 27/02/2018 Page 7/33 2.optiTruck Stakeholder forum The

D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum - v2.0-Final, 27/02/2018 Page 7/33

2. optiTruck Stakeholder forum

The goal of optiTruck to create a stakeholder forum during year one of the project was

more difficult than expected, in particular due to the technical topic of the project and

because industrial stakeholders are not ready to share related innovations.

Therefore the coordinator, with the support of project partners, decided on a three step

approach:

1. identify and bring together relevant activities, first by proposing a webinar to

introduce one another and to identify common challenges;

2. organise a first physical stakeholder forum workshop in 2018, taking into account

feedback of the proposed webinar on the common challenges;

3. involve other stakeholders in the optiTruck final event to present project results and

updates on the identified common challenges.

The Stakeholder Forum includes organisations from the ITS, automotive and related

industries, fleet and logistics operators, the public sector, etc.

So with this stepwise approach, optiTruck has developed, at different stages of the project

and when necessary, cooperation with interested parties as listed in the following table.

In particular, optiTruck has established cooperation with the Communication/Dissemination

Managers of these organisations so that optiTruck announcements, press releases, events,

etc. are promoted in their networks, and key players are invited, potentially as speakers, to

optiTruck events.

GDPR

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the most important change in data

privacy regulation in 20 years.

The introduction of GDPR regulation (https://www.eugdpr.org/) in May 2018 requires that

dissemination and communication activities of projects change the way they build forums.

Therefore, we took this regulation into account when we addressed the aforementioned

groups. As such, we specifically asked whether they would consent to participating in our

webinar and Stakeholder Forum.

This approach is following the optiTruck deliverable D9.1 on Protection Of Personal Data

(PODP).

3. Webinar organisation, results and proceedings

optiTruck webinar organisation 3.1

When planning the Webinar, we agreed upon the following format:

duration: 1 hour maximum

introduction: 5min

activities presentations: 40 min

15 min discussion at the end

Along with the presentation of optiTruck, we chose two other H2020 projects which look at

powertrain optimisation:

IMPERIUM (IMplementation of Powertrain control for Economic, low Real driving

emIssions and fuel consUMption), http://www.imperium-project.eu/, coordinated

by AVL (AT);

ORCA (Optimised Real-world Cost-Competitive Modular Hybrid Architecture for

Heavy Duty Vehicles); http://h2020-orca.eu/, coordinated by TNO (NL)

We also established contact with and invited a major US project closely related with our

project goals: VPRO (Vehicle Powertrain and Routing Co-Optimization);

https://vpro.umn.edu, coordinated by the University of Minnesota (USA) and under the

framework of the US NEXTCAR programme.

All three projects were invited to a preparatory phone conference in order to present each

other and to agree on the webinar format and talking points. The preparatory telco agenda

was as follows:

1. ARPAE describes NEXTCAR program (see presentation in Annex 1)

2. UMN describes VPRO project (see presentation in Annex 1)

3. ERTICO present H2020 framework related to Powertrain control

4. optiTruck describes consortium and research activities

5. IMPERIUM describes consortium and research activities

6. ORCA describes consortium and research activities

7. Proposal for webinar objective(s) and agenda

8. Next steps

At the end of the discussion, the webinar agenda was agreed and communicated with the

invitation to the webinar (see links hereafter). During the discussion, the following common

challenges were identified as talking points for the open discussion at the end of the

webinar:

Predictive future, what data do we really need?

How important is Data Quality?

Do we have issues with Data Security?

How to assess the real impact of proposed solutions?

optiTruck

Q: optiTruck is developing its es on Ford trucks. To develop strategies for larger deployment

of the proposed system, will optiTruck explore how its innovations might be used on other

trucks?

A: This is true that optiTruck has only one OEM in its consortium, but the principles of the

innovation elements being developed and assessed in this project will be available,

although detailed information regarding their implementation will not. It will be the

responsibility of the optiTruck industrial partner to decide what they are ready to share.

IMPERIUM

Q: How does the approach of IMPERIUM support different powertrain configurations e.g.

hybrid strategies?

A: We see on the road different kinds of hybridisation taking place, but there are still

many trucks with conventional powertrains. The challenge is to have on one hand generic

strategies that can work with all kinds of powertrain configurations and on the other hand

making best use of the existing powertrain elements.

ORCA

Q: What challenges have you encountered when assessing the functional performance of

predictive powertrain control, especially when looking at vehicles crossing city boundaries?

A: For HDVs there are various components and tools for assessing and optimising geo-

consumption and emissions, but when considering plugin hybrid powertrains there is still a

lot to be defined. Considering predictive control strategies, like determining when a

vehicle reaches a city boundary and enters into a zero emission functioning mode, there is

a lot that can be done to optimise powertrain control.

VPRO

Q: How does the VPRO traffic prediction algorithm take into account the effect of mixed

fleets (i.e. connected vehicles versus non-connected)?

A: Our strategy is to optimise our vehicle independent of what the other vehicles are

doing. So it should not matter if we have a mixed fleet or whether we have only the

vehicle we are dealing with. We try to the best of our knowledge to predict what the other

vehicles will do on the road, for example, by looking at traffic patterns from data sources,

we can gather and use that information to optimise individual vehicles.

Page 14: D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum · 2020. 4. 7. · D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum - v2.0-Final, 27/02/2018 Page 7/33 2.optiTruck Stakeholder forum The

D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum - v2.0-Final, 27/02/2018 Page 13/33

The question part of the webinar was then dedicated to discussing the common challenges

indicated in the previous presentations, in particular:

Predictive future, what data do we really need?

When using any of the prediction methodology currently available, it seems that the

sensitivity to the cycle becomes critical. Therefore we need to understand how this

prediction will function in extreme circumstances. So many applications use predictive

technologies, like bus routing, but to understand from where and when uncertainty comes

from, and what it means in terms of the functionality of the predictive control, will be a

big research challenge.

How important is Data Quality?

First, it is important to define and agree upon which information is needed, like the

estimation of the speed the vehicle should maintain and for how long. The cause for a

reduction in speed ahead is not really important but the prediction of this drop is what

matters, the impact on the powertrain control will be the same.

How to assess the real impact of proposed solutions?

All speakers agreed that this is an important topic to understand what is behind the

assessment results, how fuel consumption and CO2 are measured in order to demonstrate

the benefit of the proposed solutions.

This could be one of the topics to be discussed at the physical Stakeholder Forum planned

for September 2018.

Page 15: D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum · 2020. 4. 7. · D8.2: Proceedings of the 1st Stakeholder Forum - v2.0-Final, 27/02/2018 Page 7/33 2.optiTruck Stakeholder forum The

4. Conclusion and next steps

The webinar brought together three H2020 projects and one NEXTCAR project to share their

experiences in developing innovative solutions for powertrain control in order to reduce

fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as a result.

The link with the NEXTCAR program is promising and was of great interest for all of the

participating activities.

To build upon the work achieved by this webinar, we have planned the following next steps:

Further discussions will take place between these activities to share information on

the identified common challenges

Efforts will be made to increase the membership of the Stakeholder Forum, in

particular by distributing optiTruck brochures with flyers about the Forum at events

with dedicated sessions to this topic at conferences such as TRA 2018 in Vienna

(April 2018), but also in the US through the NEXTCAR program. Similar programmes

in Asia will also be investigated.

All registered participant and new Forum members will be invited to a physical

Stakeholder Forum in September 2018 to share our results, identify research needs

on this topic as well as address assessment methodologies.

We will also need to make sure that the organisation of the Stakeholder Forum Workshop

meeting will comply with the GDPR regulation entering into force in May 2018.
