    D771Universal Remote ControlOwners Manual

    Care and Maintenance Keep the remote dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately.

    Use and store the remote only in normal temperature environments.

    Handle the remote gently and carefully. Dont drop it.

    Keep the remote away from dust and dirt.

    Wipe the remote with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it lookingnew.

    Modifying or tampering with the remotes internal components cancause malfunction and invalidate its warranty.

    6-Component Universal Remote

    Thank you for purchasing this RCA universal remotecontrol. This product is designed to operate a widevariety of video and audio components. Please retainthis guide for future reference.

    This universal remote control is already programmed ormost RCA, GE, and PROSCAN branded TVs, VCRs, DBSsystems (manuactured beore 2003), and DVD players.

    Note: For users of RCA and PROSCAN DBS products: OlderDBS models require that the INFO or MENU key on thisremote be used to make program selections. Use theOK key for making program selections on newer RCA

    and PROSCAN DBS models. If your satellite receiverwas purchased after 2003, programming the remote is

    required.

    Battery Installation and Information

    Your universal remote requires 2 new AA alkalinebatteries (sold separately).

    To install the batteries:

    1. On the back of the remote, push down on the coverand slide it off.

    2. Insert the batteries, matching the batteries to the (+)and (-) marks inside the battery case.

    3. Slide the battery cover back into place.

    Note: Reprogramming may be required after batteries arereplaced.

    Battery Precautions: Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or

    rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries. Always remove old, weak or worn-out batteries promptly

    and recycle or dispose of them in accordance with Localand National Regulations.

    Key Description

    ANTENNAIn TVMode, lets youswitch the sourceof the video signalfrom satellite signalsto an off-air antennaor cable signal whenusing the OUTTO TV jack. In VCRMode, it functions as

    a TV/VCR input key.ARROWS Use thenavigation arrowsto move the on-screen highlight up,down, left, or right.Using the arrows tohighlight a menuitem is also calledpointing.

    CH + (UP)/ -

    (dOWN) Use toscan up and downthrough the channelsin the currentchannel list. If youare in the programguide or menusystem, use the CH+/- keys to page upand down a screenat a time. You can

    also use the CH +/-keys on the top ofthe digital satellitereceiver to changethe channel.

    CLEAR Removes the on-screen displays and returnsyou to normal viewing.

    COMPONENT KEYS When programmed, these keysare used to put the remote in a specific mode so that itcan control that component.

    AUX1 ANd AUX2 Act as wildcard keys. They canbe programmed to control another TV, VCR, DVD,satellite receiver, cable box, or an audio component.Follow the direct entry programming instructions toprogram these keys.

    Note: The AUX1 key is pre-programmed with codes tocontrol a Dish Network digital satellite receiver.

    dVd Puts the remote in DVD Mode.

    TV CODE

    SAT Puts the remote in SAT Mode. This key is pre-programmed to control an RCA DIRECTV digitalsatellite receiver manufactured before 2004.

    Note: This key cannot be reprogrammed. If the SATkey doesnt control your receiver, use the AUX1 key toprogram the remote to control your satellite receiver if itwas purchased after 2003.

    TVPuts the remote in TV Mode.

    VCR Puts the remote in VCR Mode.

    dIgIT KEYS (0-9) Use the digit keys to tune directly toa three-digit satellite channel or non-satellite channel.If a satellite channel number is less than four-digitslong, you must press OKafter entering the channelnumber. If you are in the menu system, use the digitsto highlight and select items. Use 0 to return to theprevious menu screen.

    FETCH Either brings up the Fetch menu or tells thereceiver to take the action you programmed it to take.

    gO BACKMoves you back and forth between the lasttwo selected channels. In the menu system, returns youto the previous screen.

    gUIdE Brings up the program guide. Subsequentpresses of the gUIdE key switch between the Detailand Grid guide formats.

    INFO Brings up the on-screen channel banner, passwordchallenge, or purchase offer screen. Press again to getprogram details. In the program guides, press INFOto get information about the highlighted program orchannel.

    LEd INdICATOR LIgHT This light turns red at eachvalid key press. When programming the remote control,it flashes or turns on or off to indicate programmingstatus.

    MENU Displays the Main menu. If you are alreadyin the menu system, press OKor MENU to select ahighlighted choice. When you are using the remotecontrol to operate an RCA, GE, or PROSCAN VCR (theremote is in VCR mode), the MENU key functions as aPROgRAM key.

    MUTE Reduces the TVs volume to its minimum level.Press again to restore the volume.

    OKSelects a highlighted choice if you are in the menusystem. After entering a one-, two-, or three-digitsatellite channel number, press to tune to the channel.If you are entering a number other than a satellitechannel number (for instance, to tune your VCR to achannel), you do not need to press this key. Press theOKkey when the Interactive TV icon appears on thescreen. Pressing OKwill display more information and

    offer the chance to interact in some way with what isdisplayed on screen.

    ONOFF Turns the component you are controllingon or off. When pressed twice within two seconds,all components that are on will be turned off. Thisfeature only works with most RCA, GE, and PROSCANproducts. You can also use the ONOFF key on the top(front panel) of the digital satellite receiver to turn offthe receiver.

    SKIP This key is not used by the digital satellitereceiver. It is functional only with RCA, GE, PROSCANTVs and VCRs.

    TRANSPORT KEYS (REVERSE, PLAY, FORWARd,

    RECORd, STOP, PAUSE) When programmed, thesekeys are used to control an auxiliary component,such as a VCR or DVD player. Note: If your VCR isconnected, the RECORd key can be used to schedule

    a timed recording when using the Program Guide orto begin recording while watching a program (in VCRMode).

    VOL + (UP)/ - (dOWN) Adjusts the audio volume ofyour TV.

    WHOINPUT Press the WHO key one or more times toscroll through the user profiles. When you are using theremote control to operate an RCA, GE, or PROSCANTV (in TV Mode), press the WHOINPUT key one ormore times to scroll through the available video input

    sources.

    Programming the RemoteThe remote is already programmed to control mostRCA, GE, and PROSCAN branded components; it mayneed to be programmed to control other manufacturersbrands.

    Testin The Remote Control To determine whetherthe universal remote control needs to be programmed,turn on a component, such as a VCR, point the remoteat the VCR, and press theVCR key. Then pressONOFF or CH + or CH - to see if the VCR respondsto the remote commands. If it does not respond, theremote needs to be programmed.

    There are two ways to program the remote control:Automatic Code Search or Direct Entry.

    Programming for TVDirect Entry Method

    1. Manually turn on the TV.

    2. Locate the enclosed TV Code List. Find your brand ofTV.

    3. Press and hold the TVkey.

    4. Enter a code from the code list.

    5. Release the TV key, and thenpress ONOFF to see if the TVresponds to the remote controlcommands. If it doesnt, trypressing the TV key and then

    ONOFF again.

    6. If you get no response, repeatthese steps using the next codelisted for your brand until theTV responds to the remotecontrol commands.

    Programming for VCRDirect Entry Method

    5. Release the DVD key, and thenpress ONOFF to see if theDVD responds to the remotecontrol commands. If it doesnt,try pressing the DVD key andthen ONOFF again.

    6. If you get no response, repeatthese steps using the next code

    listed for your brand, until theDVD responds to the remotecontrol commands.

    Programming the AUX1 and AUX2 Keys

    You can assign any one o the ollowing components to theAUX1 orAUX2 keys:

    A second TV, VCR, DVD, satellite system, cable box, or anaudio component.

    Note:TheAUX1 key is pre-programmed with codes tocontrol Dish Network digital satellite receivers. The SAT keyis pre-programmed with codes to control RCA DIRECTV

    digital satellite receivers. If you wish to control a second RCADIRECTV digital satellite receiver, program theAUX1 orAUX2key with satellite code 5001.

    Then refer to your RCA DIRECTV satellite receiver manual forinstructions on remote control setup.

    1. Manually turn on the component you wish to control.

    Find the four-digit code for the component you wishto program in the code list.

    2. Press and hold theAUX1 orAUX2 key. While holding theAUX1 orAUX2 key, press thefirst number of the componentcode. If the first number isvalid, the LED will turn off.

    3. Enter the code using the Digit(09) keys.

    After your full code is entered,the LED light will turn on toverify that the code entered isvalid. Release the componentkey. The LED will go off.

    Note:If the code is invalid, the LED

    light will flash four times and the

    remote will revert back to normal

    operation maintaining the current code.

    4. Aim the remote at thecomponent you wish to controland press the ONOFF key. Thecomponent should turn off.

    Note:If the component you have programmed does not respond,

    try all the codes for your brand. If the codes do not work, or yourbrand is not listed, try the Automatic Code Search method.

    5. With your component on,press CH+ (Channel UP)or theONOFF key. If the componentresponds, no furtherprogramming is required.

    6. Enter your code here and thencheck the type of componentyou programmed for easyreference.

    Using Automatic Code SearchThe ollowing instructions can be used to program theremote to control the TV, VCR or DVD. I you want toexit the automatic code search without programming any oyour components, press the CLEAR key until the LED (redlight) turns o.

    1. Turn on the component you want to control (TV,

    VCR or DVD).2. Press and hold the component key you want to

    program. While holding the component key, pressand hold ONOFF until the LED on the remotecontrol turns on, then release both keys.

    Note: TheAUX1 andAUX2 keys can only be programmedusing Direct Entry Mode.

    3. Point the remote at the component, press and releasePLAY, then wait five seconds or until the LED stopsflashing.

    At this point the remote control is searching for the

    correct code to program. If, after five seconds, thecomponent you want to control does not turn off,press and release PLAYagain to tell the remote tosearch the next set of codes.

    Continue pressing and releasing PLAYuntil thecomponent turns off or you have searched throughall of the codes. There are 20 sets of codes. If thecomponent does not turn off after pressing PLAY20times, then the remote cannot control that particularcomponent.

    If the component you want to control does turn off:

    1. Press and release REVERSE, then wait two seconds.Repeat this step until the component turns back on.

    2. To finish, press and hold STOP until the LED on theremote control turns off.

    Using the Remote to Control aComponentBecause this universal remote can control several dierentcomponents (TV, VCR, DVD, etc.), it uses operationalmodes triggered by the component keys. For example, iyou want the remote to control the TV, you would press theTVkey to put the remote into TV Mode. Then, i you wantto play a videotape, pressVCR then PLAY(pointing theremote at the VCR).

    Changing the RF Remote CodeYour remote control is equipped with RF unctionality.This means that the remote can control the digital satellitereceiver using both IR (inrared) signals and RF (radiorequency) signals i it is equipped with an RF receiver. IRsignals require line-o-sight to the receivers ront panelremote sensor. RF signals can control the receiver romother parts o your house, even through walls. Installing

    your RF remote control antenna will increase the rangeo your RF remote signal. See the owners manual o yourDBS system or more details.

    Note: This feature is only applicable for RCA DIRECTV digital

    satellite receivers.

    If you are experiencing interference from other RFcomponents, you may need to change the RF remotecontrol code. To change the code first in your satellitereceiver, do the following:

    1. Select Options in the Main menu.

    2. Select System Options.

    3. Select RF Remote.

    4. If you normally use the SAT key on your remoteto control your RCA satellite receiver, choose anumber between 000 and 255. Follow the on-screeninstructions to enter this number as your RF remotecontrol code. However, if you use theAUX1 orAUX2key, choose a number between 000 and 099.

    Then, to change the code on your remote to matchthe satellite receiver, perform the following:

    1. Press and hold the SAT key,AUX1, orAUX2 key(depending on which key you use to control yoursatellite receiver).

    2. Then use the Digit keys to enter the same RF remotecontrol code (000-255 for SAT), or (000-099 forAUX1orAUX2) on your remote control.

    Menu FunctionThe Menu function is used to make changes in theselected settings, such as setting color, channels, timer,

    etc. The MENU key displays TV, DVD player, and DBSmenu screens on your TV. Each Menu function willvary from brand to brand.

    Entering the Menu Mode

    1. Push the component key onthe remote for the desiredmenu screen.

    2. Push the MENU key. This

    allows you to view the menuof the chosen component. Themenu should now be visibleon your television.

    Note: With some brands you may have to press thegUIdE or INFO key for the on-screen menu.

    You may have pressed an invalid key or the mode theremote is in (e.g., the RECORd key only works in VCRMode).

    Make sure the batteries are properly installed. (SeeBattery Installation on page 1).

    Replace the batteries with two new AA batteries.Reprogramming may be required.

    Problem: The remote does not operate your

    component. You must put the remote in the correct mode by

    pressing the corresponding component key (TV, VCR,dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) so the remote knows whichcomponent you want to operate.

    Remove any obstacles between the remote and thecomponent. Make sure to aim the remote at the IRsensor on the component.

    Make sure the batteries are properly installed. (SeeBattery Installation on page 1).

    Replace the batteries with two new AA batteries.

    Reprogramming may be required.

    Reset the remote. Remove the batteries. Then press andhold the number1 key on the remote or several secondsto reset the microprocessor inside the remote. Release thenumber1 key, reinstall the batteries, and try the remoteagain. Reprogramming will be required.

    Problem: The remote is not performing commandsproperly.

    You must put the remote in the correct mode bypressing the corresponding component key (TV,

    VCR, dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) so the remote knowswhich component you want to operate.

    Make sure the component is ready (e.g., DVDplayer has disc loaded; VCR has tape loaded, etc.).

    You may have pressed an invalid key for the modethe remote is in (e.g., the RECORd key only worksin VCR Mode).

    If you are trying to turn on an RCA, GE orPROSCAN component, press the component key(TV, VCR, dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) instead of theONOFF key.

    If youre trying to change channels, try pressing theOKkey after entering the channel number as this is arequirement of certain models and brands.

    There is a possibility that a programmed code mayonly be able to control some of your componentfeatures (e.g., only turns a component on andoff). Follow the steps provided for programmingthe remote (See Programming sections). If thecomponent can be turned on and off, make sureyou press the CH+/CH- key to see if the componentresponds. If not, try the next code from the list.

    Problem: The VCR wont record. As a safety feature, you must press the RECORd key

    twice to begin recording.

    Make sure the tape is properly loaded in the VCR.

    Make sure the tape is not write-protected. If thesafety tab is removed, the tape is write-protected andyou cannot record onto that tape.

    OR

    3. While in MENU Mode, thesekeys will function as follows:

    Navigation LEFT/RIgHT keyswill operate as cursor rightand left.

    Navigation UP/dOWN keyswill operate as cursor up anddown.

    MENU or OKkey applies thehighlighted menu item.

    Not all functions in all modelsand brands of equipment maybe fully supported.

    Exiting the Menu Mode

    To exit the MENU Mode andclear the screen on your TV, pushthe CLEAR key.

    Troubleshooting

    Problem: Remote cant be programmed to operateyour component.

    You may be too ar away rom the component or at awrong angle. This remote uses IR (inrared) technologyto communicate with components. The remote sendsthe code and the components IR sensor reads the code.

    Thereore, there must be an unobstructed path betweenthe remote and the IR sensor on the component.Move closer and make sure you point the remote atthe component (VCR when programming theVCRkey; DVD when programming the dVd key; TVwhen programming the TVkey; satellite receiver whenprogramming the SAT key).

    I youve entered all o the codes or your brand that arein the enclosed Code Lists and ollowed the instructions,try the Automatic Code Search method (See UsingAutomatic Code Search).

    You must put the remote in the correct mode bypressing the corresponding component key (TV, VCR,dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) so the remote knows whichcomponent you want to operate.

    To program the universal remote to operate acombination unit (TV/VCR or TV/DVD), frst trythe VCR or DVD codes or your brand. Some units,however, require that you program both the TV (usingthe TV codes) and the VCR or DVD (using the VCR orDVD codes) or ull operation.

    To program the universal remote to operate acombination unit (VCR /DVD), frst program your

    VCR using theVCR key and then program your DVDusing the dVd key.

    Problem: The indicator light does not light whenyou press a key.

    You must put the remote in the correct mode bypressing the corresponding component key (TV, VCR,dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) so the remote knows whichcomponent you want to operate.

    Problem: The remote will not change channels.

    Press the OK key ater you enter a channel number.

    Problem: The components menu doesnt appear onthe TV screen.

    The TV must be tuned to the Video Input thatmatches the manner in which you connected thecomponent to the TV. For example, if you connectedyour DVD player to your TV by connecting audio/video cables (usually color-coded yellow, red andwhite) to the TVs Input 1 jack, you must tune theTV to its Video 1 Input channel. Remember, differentmanufacturers label these jacks differently. Consultyour TVs instruction manual for more information.

    You must put the remote in the correct mode bypressing the corresponding component key (TV, VCR,

    dVd, SAT, AUX1, AUX2) so the remote knows whichcomponent you want to operate.

    Menu access isnt supported for all brands. You mayneed to use the original remote control to accessmenu functions for some components.
