Cylinder Head. The C9 cylinder head isdesigned for maximum breathing, whichhelps ensure excellent fuel efficiency.This one-piece, stress-relieved,gray-iron casting has four valves percylinder. Robust intake and exhaustvalves aid airflow and provide excellentreliability and fuel efficiency.

Pistons. The two-piece articulatedpiston design consists of a forged-steelcrown for maximum strength and acast aluminum skirt to reduce weight.A large piston pin holds the crown,skirt and connecting rod together.The aluminum skirt runs cooler thanconventional pistons, allowing a closerfit to the cylinder liner and providinglonger life. The steel crown handlesthe higher internal pressures oftoday’s engines.

Crankshaft. The crankshaft is a steelforging with induction-hardened journalsand fillets. The wide center and endmain journals and bearings are designedto maintain maximum oil film thicknessfor excellent lubrication and forcooling the bearings. The result islong life-to-overhaul.

Two Pass Cooling System. Using a twopass system, the AMOCS radiatorprovides a more efficient heat exchange.The coolant is routed from a sectionedbottom tank up the front side, over thetop of the core and down the engineside of the core to the bottom tank.This flow pattern allows the coolantto pass through the radiator twice forbetter cooling.

Modular Design. The cooling elementsare individual core modules connectedto a sectioned bottom tank. There is notop tank to remove.

• Standard nine steel fins per 2.54 cm(1 in), or an optional 6 steel fins per2.54 cm (1 in).

• Brass tube construction within eachcore for improved reliability.

Air-to-Air Aftercooler. The D6R IIfeatures air-to-air aftercooling.Dedicated air-to-air aftercooler circuitprovides cooler inlet air temperatures,which improves performance andreduces engine emissions.

Serviceability. Modular core designpermits removal of a single corewithout removing the entire radiator,which reduces repair costs and downtime.AMOCS eliminates the top tank,side channels and one sealing surface,making it more reliable and easier toservice. It features a site gauge forquick service checks.

Protection From Leaks. To reduce thepotential for coolant leaks, brass tubesare welded to a large, thick header,improving strength of the tube-to-headerjoint. In conditions where abrasivematerials can be airborne, use theattachment sand blast grid to preventcore damage.

Sand Blast Grid. In an application whereairborne debris is prevalent, radiatorcore protection is a concern. To extendradiator life in harsh applications, a sandblast grid is available as an option todeflect the damaging debris the enginefan propels at the radiator.

A single stage torqueconverter sends 70% of engine torquethrough a converter and 30% through adirect drive shaft for greater drivelineefficiency and higher torquemultiplication to get heavy loadsmoving. The torque divider providesimproved efficiency and broader rangeof performance in second gearapplications.

Operating Efficiency and DrivelineReliability. The D6R II torque dividerattains the best combination ofoperating efficiency and drivelinereliability. It reduces dozing shockloads to the transmission and finaldrives by acting as a hydrodynamiccomponent between the engine andtransmission.

Finger Tip Control. The D6R II withFinger Tip Control features low effortfinger tip levers for steering and touchshift buttons for upshift and downshift.The steering clutches and brakes arefade resistant and adjustment free.Multi-disk, oil-cooled steeringclutches are hydraulically applied andelectronically controlled. Brakes areapplied by springs and hydraulicallyreleased for safe, reliable brakingperformance.

Differential Steering. A D6R II equippedwith differential steering maintainspower to both tracks while turning.The tractor turns when one track speedsup and the other slows down an equalamount. The operator can steer andcontrol the transmission simultaneouslywhich can reduce cycle times in someapplications. The differential steeringtiller bar has touch shift buttons forupshifts and downshifts. The tiller baritself is easily rotated forward or reverseto change the respective tractor direction.The tiller bar is moved forward to steerthe tractor to the left and pulled backto go right. Low tiller bar efforts assureoperator comfort during long shifts.Large blade loads can be maneuveredaround buildings, bridge abutments,trees, or other obstacles. Steeringmodulation is also optimized for precisecontrol in these applications. Greaterload capacity, power and speed controlare possible in soft underfoot conditionsand on steep slopes because both tracksare powered during turns.

Elevated Final Drive. Isolates finaldrives from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Thick, Large Diameter Plates andClutch Disks. Provides higher torquecapacity and increased service life.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse gear for easy,efficient directional changes. Auto-shiftsettings include first forward to secondreverse, second forward to secondreverse and second forward to firstreverse. Auto-kickdown allowsthe transmission to automaticallydownshift when significant loadincreases are detected.

Load Compensating Shifting.Automatically adjusts the clutchengagement timing according to loadfactor, resulting in improved tractorperformance and operator comfortduring speed changes. Load compensatingshifting reduces the amount of energydissipated through the clutches to helpextend transmission component life.

Caterpillar Monitoring System.Provides the operator instant feedbackon the machine conditions and recordsperformance data to help diagnoseproblems. Caterpillar MonitoringSystem includes the following gaugesand readouts:

Electronic Steering and TransmissionControl. The D6R II offers standardFinger Tip Control (FTC) or optionaldifferential steering. Both steeringmethods deliver the maneuverabilityand control operators need to matchto operating conditions. Touch shiftbuttons on the steering control shiftsthe electronically controlled powershifttransmission. Both steering systemsallow simultaneous, one-hand steeringand transmission control.

Work Tool Controls. The D6R II featuresergonomically designed blade andripper controls with low effort pilotoperated hydraulics for added operatorcomfort, easy operation and precisework tool control. When equipped witha PAT blade, the blade control allowssimultaneous six way control of theblade with a thumb rocker control toadjust blade angle.

Work Tool Lock-out. The lock-out valveprevents inadvertent operation of thehydraulic work tool attachments.

Throttle Rocker Switch. A rockerswitch control activates high or low idlewith a touch of a finger. A deceleratorpedal gives the operator full control ofengine speed when the rocker switch isin the high idle position.

Caterpillar Comfort Series Seat.The D6R II features the new CatComfort Series Seat for increasedoperator comfort and reduced operatorfatigue. The seat is fully adjustable anddesigned for comfort and support.The seat and back cushions are thickerand designed to reduce pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Pilot Operated Hydraulics. The D6R IIfeatures work tools that are controlledby pilot hydraulics that reduces leverefforts and provides unmatchedmodulation and control.

Power Angle Tilt Blade. A Power AngleTilt (PAT) Blade on the D6R II allowsthe operator to hydraulically adjust theblade lift, angle and tilt simultaneouslyusing the ergonomically designed bladecontrol handle. The versatility of thePAT blade gives the D6R II the abilityto take on a variety of applications, suchas finish grading, spreading material,side casting, V-ditching and backfilling.The PAT blade is available on thedifferential steer XL, XW and LGPconfigurations and requires a rear worktool attachment. Operation in large rockor stump applications is notrecommended.

Semi-Universal Blade. Built fortough applications where penetrationis important, the SU blade is aggressivein penetrating and loading material.The blade wings are designed forsuperior load retention. It can beconfigured with a push plate forpushloading scrapers.

Straight Blade. The S-blade providesgood versatility. Since it has less bladecapacity it can handle heavier materialsthan a larger blade. The front of theS-blade is closer to the front of thetractor making it easier to maneuveron small and congested job sites.The S-blade can be configured with apush plate for pushloading scrapers.

Angle Blade. The angle blade ismounted to a C-frame, using a pinnedconnection which permits blade anglingand tilting, left or right.

Cutting Edges. High-tensile strengthCat DH-2 steel cutting edges resisttorsional bending and distortion intough applications. End bits are DH-3to provide maximum service life intough materials.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. Field-provenload-sensing pilot controlled hydraulicsrespond to operating requirements byautomatically and continually adjustinghydraulic power to maximize work toolefficiency.

Multi-Shank Ripper. The multi-shankparallelogram ripper lets you chooseone, two or three shanks dependingon job conditions. Curved or straightripper shanks are available.

Drawbar. The D6R II can be equippedwith a drawbar for pulling work toolssuch as:

• Disks.

• Compactors.

• Chopper wheels.

• Retrieving other equipment.

Winch.

• Single lever control actuates bothclutch and brake functions toimprove operator efficiency.

• Input clutches on PTO shaft reduceengine horsepower losses, providefuel efficiency and economy.

• Clutch engagement and brakerelease are automaticallysynchronized for smooth operation.

• Winch components can be servicedwith winch mounted on tractor.

Frame and Castings. The D6R II frameis built to absorb high impact shockloads and twisting forces. Castingsare added to provide added strengthto the main case.

L-Shaped Push Arms. L-shaped pusharms bring the blade closer to the machinethan diagonal brace design for excellentmaneuverability, machine balanceand blade penetration. The L-shapedpush arm design provides solid lateralstability and better cylinder positionsfor constant pryout independent ofblade height.

Pivot Shaft. The pivot shaft is bolted tothe mainframe and connects to the rollerframes for independent oscillation.The strong pivot shaft distributes impactloads throughout the case, reducingbending stresses on the case. This designeliminates alignment problems and theneed for diagonal braces on the rollerframes. Caterpillar Track-Type Tractorsset the industry standard for mainframedurability.

Equalizer Bar. The pinned equalizerbar gives the roller frames the abilityto oscillate up or down to better matchground contours while providingmaximum traction and operator comfort.Equalizer bar with optional oil filledend pin joints and limited slip sealsoffer longer life in severe applicationsand reduced repair costs.

Product Link. The optional Product LinkSystem is a factory installed or easilyretrofitted wireless system that simplifiesequipment fleet tracking. Using satellitetechnology, the Internet and yourdealer’s storefront website, the systemautomatically reports key machineparameters such as location, hour meter,active and logged service codes andforwards them to the customer throughthe dealer’s storefront website.

Caterpillar Monitoring System.The D6R II features a more flexiblemonitoring system that is easily upgradedby flashing software rather than replacingthe module.
