Accreditation Scheme
(BOAS)
D6A
Introducing BOAS
The Boiler Operative Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) provides national accreditation for industrial boiler operators and boiler
plant managers. Spirax Sarco is a licensed and approved BOAS training provider. The D6A course provides training to the
BOAS syllabus and includes the written examination1. Candidates are also interviewed by a Gastec assessor during the
course 2.
Successful candidates may use the designatory letters “Cert IBO” (Certified Industrial Boiler Operative) or Dip BOM
(Diploma in Boiler Operational Management). Candidates from both award categories take the same course and written
papers. Interviews are specific to each award.
Who will benefit?
This course is suitable for:
• Boiler operatives with hands-on experience
• Boiler plant managers and supervisors (no hands-on
experience required)
Those new to the boiler house wishing to have
introductory boiler training should consider the D6
course on page 5.
Delegates will learn about:
• Heat and heat transfer
• Boilers and auxiliaries
• Feedwater
• Draught and combustion
• Controls and instrumentation
A syllabus is available on request.
Objectives
• To train and prepare candidates for the BOAS
qualification
• To promote safety and energy efficiency in the
boiler house with due regard to environmental
aspects and legal requirements
1 The course includes the written examination papers.
All candidates sit these irrespective of boiler type or award.
2 Candidates from sites having shell boilers are interviewed
during the course. Those having water tube boilers are
interviewed at site.
3 The cost is for the training course. Additional Gastec
fees are payable for registration and post-course
assessment.

Dates
Please contact us with details of your requirements.
We would be pleased to discuss and agree course
content or we can provide typical programmes for
you to customise.
Cost
Courses will be priced according to location,
content and duration.

Who will benefit?
Maintenance engineers, fitters, plant engineers, boiler
attendants, design engineers, etc.
Objectives & Topics
Naturally we would prefer you to visit our Cheltenham
Training Centre, where a dedicated boiler plant and
demonstration area is the first choice for hands-on training
and demonstrations (see page 1).
However, if this is not practical, perhaps due to your shift
coverage, then why not hold a bespoke course on-site?
Most of the courses listed in this brochure can be delivered
on-site (popular ones include steam boiler house overview,
the D6 (page 5), introduction to steam systems and safety
awareness). We can offer suggested programmes which can
be customised to meet your exact needs.
