1 Introduction

The 5G-MiEdge project is investigating technological solutions to integrate MEC and

mmWave into the 5G network architecture in order to offer innovative services and

applications. This is achieved by means of an edge cloud and the introduction of an

ultra-lean and inter-operable signaling, called ‘liquid control plane’, capable of

providing ubiquitous allocation of computation and communication resources, in an

application-/user-centric framework.

The objective of this report is to present the achieved dissemination, standardisation,

and exploitation activities, how they are implemented, and the expected results. It will

also anticipate future planned dissemination and exploitation activities. These efforts

have the goal to ensure that the results of the project are sufficiently advertised during

its time span, mainly by means of dissemination and, at the same time, they are

introduced onto the standardisation path and taken into account in the exploitation

plans of the consortium partners. On top of this, these actions are foreseen in order to

guarantee that, also after the project is finished, key achievements will find their way

to become part of marketable technologies and products.

In the deliverable the main outcomes from these activities during the second year of

the project are also described.

projects VirtuWind [VirtuWind], 5G-EX [5gex], SPEED-5G [Speed], 5G MonArch

[5GMonArch], and 5GCity [5GCity]. The goal of this workshop is to showcase the

work of 5G-MiEdge and other 5GPPP 2 Phase projects and discuss business and

techno-economic issues of 5G networks. It provides insight on the business impacts

and opportunities from the deployment of 5G networks for all actors in the

telecommunications ecosystem such as verticals, incumbent and new operators,

service providers, application developers, content providers, regulators and equipment

manufacturers. The workshop also addresses aspects related to the techno-economic

analysis of future 5G deployments such as CAPEX and OPEX modeling, demand

models for new services, pricing strategies and charging schemes, including new

methodologies and modeling. It also identifies major challenges of business and

service coordination in the multi-actor 5G services value chain and will depict the

correlation of 5G wholesale services as fundamental building blocks and enablers for

retail markets and verticals.

The program of the workshop is presented in Table 5.

2.4 Other collaboration activities

One of the 5G-MiEdge project goals is to establish links with other related

collaborative projects in the 5G ecosystem to have both a better knowledge of existing

solutions and to take advantage of possible advances in the considered fields. A special

care will be spent on aligning the course of 5G-MiEdge with other funded projects

running in parallel (see Figure 6), so to avoid overlapping or leaving white spots, which

would reduce the impact of the project, and to foster synergies among projects working

Page 22: D5.1 First report on dissemination, standards, regulation ...IEEE ICC 2017 and 2018, EUCNC 2017 and 2018, and IEEE GLOBECOM 2017. To strengthen the collaboration between Asian (Japan

on related areas. It is worth to highlight that these collaborations are based on strategic

purposes and that are the results of an extensive survey, which has been presented in

D1.1 [D1.1] and D1.2 [D1.2] and continuously updated.

During the second year, these activities have been being carried through several

collaboration actions:

The project has established contacts with two other projects that present

significant synergies with 5G-MiEdge: MiEdge+ (Japan domestic project) and

5G! Pagoda [5G-Pag] (EU-JP collaborative project). MiEdge+ partners were

invited as observers to the 5G-MiEdge general assemblies. A representation of

the cooperation axes and differences between 5G-MiEdge and MiEdge+

projects is shown in Figure 7. Discussions with 5G! Pagoda on joint test-bed

development were also done at the latest GA in Tokyo.

Figure 6. The relations of 5G-MiEdge and the 5G Ecosystem.

5G-MiEdge has established a liaison with several 5GPPP projects and has

participated together with the H2020 projects TWEETHER [TWEETHER]

and ULTRAWAVE [ULTRAWAVE] to the organization of the Special

Session Workshop on “Economics and Adoption of Millimeter Wave

Technology in Future Networks” @WCNC’18 in Barcelona on 15-18 April

millimeter-wave-technology-in-future-networks-wcnc18-cfp-deadline-on-

technologies but at higher frequencies than the 5G-MiEdge project and

specifically TWEETHER develops solution for the realization of the first W-

band (92-95GHz) wireless system for distribution of high speed internet

everywhere. In contrast, ULTRAWAVE is aiming at developing a high

capacity backhaul able to provide more than 100 Gbps per kilometer square in

Point to Multi point at D-band (141 – 174.8 GHz) fed by novel G-band (300

GHz) Point to Point.

Figure 7. Cooperation axes and differences between 5G-MiEdge and the MiEdge+.

5G-MiEdge has co-organized a half-day workshops hosted at EUCNC 2018

(https://5g-ppp.eu/event/5gcity-and-other-5g-ppp-projects-eucnc18/) together

with the EU funded projects VirtuWind [VirtuWind], 5G-EX [5gex], SPEED-

5G [Speed], 5G MonArch [5GMonArch], and 5GCity [5GCity]. Due to

common use cases and close technological developments, of a particular

interest for 5G-MiEdge are the collaboration with SPEED-5G, 5G MonArch,

and 5GCity. Speed 5G solutions related to the usage of shared, unlicensed and

lightly licensed spectrum (below 6 GHz only) are very interesting for the

objectives of 5G-MiEdge. 5G Monarch elasticity mechanisms that aim to

satisfy the requirements related to their “Turist city testbed” can be very much

beneficial for the 5G-MiEdge “Omotenashi services”. Similarly, 5GCity aims

to develop and deploy a solution to allow providers (i.e., municipalities) deploy

basic IT infrastructure to implement novel use cases at a fraction of the cost

and time. Also, we foresee that these smart city technologies can be integrated

successfully in the “Omotenashi services”.

5G-MiEdge has co-organized the 5G-Testbed workshop in IEEE Globecom

2017 together with the EU-Kr collaborative project 5G Champion [5G-

Champ]. Both the projects have as main focus to demonstrate their 5G

mmWave functionalities in the very next years: 5G Champion targets to

showcase its technology during the Korean Winter Olympic games in 2018

while 5G-MiEdge has the objective to highlight its mmWave and MEC

solution in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

5G-MiEdge has participated to the SPEED-5G workshop “Spectrum

management in 5G+ networks”, London, 07 Mar. 2018 (https://speed-

5g.eu/publications/speed-5g-workshops/workshop-advanced-spectrum-

management-in-5g-networks-london-7th-march-2018/). This workshop was

organized at BT Centre in London and it presented novel results of

international research projects on selected aspects of 5G and beyond networks.

The main focus was on dynamic spectrum access techniques. The workshop

attracted an international audience from both industry and academia. The

invited talk title was "5G-MiEdge - Bridging the gap between 5G and B5G".

Following the participation to the industrial workshop organized by the EU-Br

collaborative project Futebol [Futebol] in 2017 [D5.2], 5G-MiEdge has been

invited to the Industry and Stakeholders panel in the workshop organized by

the project Futebol at EuCNC 2018: “Optical and Wireless Network

Convergence: An enabler for 5G”

Following the participation of Prof. Salsano as invited speaker at Smartcom

2017, 5G-MiEdge and Superfluidity [Superfluidity] consortia have prepared a

joint paper presented at IEEE WCNC 2018 on the relevant business and

economic aspects of 5G systems [Frascola2018]. The EU-funded research

project Superfluidity has focused on the design of a flexible, agile and high

performance architecture for 5G networks. The key concept is the

decomposition of services and network functions into softwarized components,

called Reusable Functional Blocks that can be deployed on the 5G

infrastructure.

2.5 Dissemination to standards and regulation

The 5G-MiEdge is monitoring the progress and the outcome of standardization bodies

working on topics relevant for the project. When possible the consortium is trying to

push into standards the main results coming out of the project. Such standardization

efforts in the 5G-MiEdge project will be aligned with other H2020 funded 5GPPP

projects in EU as well as 5GMF (5G Mobile Communication Promotion Forum) in

Japan. Regular reports of the main outcomes of standards bodies are shared among the

project partners, so to ensure that the directions taken by the project are aligned with

the on-going 5G standardization activities.

The most relevant standards group for the topics in focus in the project, and therefore

the groups that the project aims at impacting most, are listed in the table below. Other

fora may be identified during the last year of the project.

Table 7.Target standardization bodies and current impact.

In addition to standards, another important aspect for achieving an effective

deployment of a new technology is the alignment and potentially the impact on

regulatory bodies. The availability of new spectrum and a different use of the existing

one are key enabling aspects for mmWave technologies. Therefore 5G-MiEdge will

tightly monitor and support the work that is starting in regulatory bodies in preparation

of the WRC 2019. More specifically, during the last year of the project, we plan a

meeting with European regulators (likely Ofcom and ANFR, with which the first

contact already started), to present the major 5G-MiEdge results.

We would like to recall that the project made 6 contributions to 3GPP SA1 in its first

year and as a result of these contributions, 5G-MiEdge studies have impacted two

3GPP documents.

• 3GPP TR22.886, V15.1.0, "Study on enhancement of 3GPP support for 5G

V2X services," Mar. 2017.

• 3GPP TS22.186, V15.1.0, "Service requirements for enhanced V2X

scenarios," June 2017.

3 Updated Exploitation plans

The 5G-MiEdge consortium was carefully constructed partner-wise to ensure the

presence of several different business segments: operators, equipment manufacturers,

infrastructure component suppliers, academia, and research centers. Their diversity in

expertise, focus areas, business aspects and working methods increases the probability

of a successful impact on the worldwide market of the technologies proposed by the

project. Such diversity also implies that different approaches will be followed by the

consortium partners for an effective exploitation of the project results. It is worth to

underline that 6 patents have been filed at the time being, respectively from PANA,

CEA, and TTech. In addition, there is an ongoing engagement with the Brasilian

Page 26: D5.1 First report on dissemination, standards, regulation ...IEEE ICC 2017 and 2018, EUCNC 2017 and 2018, and IEEE GLOBECOM 2017. To strengthen the collaboration between Asian (Japan

company VALE (www.vale.com) on 5G-MiEdge use cases and relevant enabling

technologies.

Particular attention is related to the 5G-MiEdge use cases presented in D1.1 [D1.1]

and the associated preliminary business opportunities presented in D1.2 [D1.2]. A

thorough analysis of the business impact will be presented in the third year of the

project, when finalized technical results are available. The following main exploitation

streams have been identified at the moment:

1. Equipment vendors (Intel, PANA): leveraging on the acquired knowledge

of the state of the art of the technologies in focus and having a very deep

outstanding expertise in innovation and pre-development activities will

ensure an appropriate feasibility analysis of the future technologies. The

outcomes of the project will be used to better understand both new customer

requirements and the impact of the enabling 5G technologies on the current

products, as well as being enabled to launch new products with appealing

features to the international markets fuelling competition. The technological

know-how build-up in the project will provide a competitive advantage

versus the other companies not involved in the project. Indeed, the

possibility of filing new patents to protect the newly developed technologies

is an additional key aspect in the exploitation of the project results. PANA

has filed three patents (one in the first year and two in the second year)

related to the work produced in WP2. PANA is successfully showcasing the

results generated in the framework of 5G-MiEdge during multiple industrial

events, such at the WTP 2017.

2. Telecom operators (TI, KLAB): The project results could be reflected as a

guidance of their future deployment plan for their infrastructures and new

services. In this context, the testing activity that will be performed by the

Innovation Dept. of TI on the new antenna prototypes at mmWave

(developed within the project) could give useful hints.

3. Research institutes (FHG, CEA): working on the project topics will

contribute to increase their knowledge on the future network design for

better understanding of current industry needs, and to identify new

challenges and focus for future research activities. The obtained knowledge

is already used as a background for transferring new technological solutions

to their industrial partners, in particular network vendors, telecom operators,

service providers and others. Thanks to the results obtained in 5G-MiEdge,

CEA is starting new research topics for enabling ultra- broadband

communications in frequency bands higher than those considered by 5G-

MiEdge. CEA has filed a patent related to the studies carried out in 5G-

MiEdge in WP2 (in the first year of the project) and another one (in the

second year of the project) related to the studies on WP3. CEA has

showcased the first results originated in the framework of 5G-MiEdge in the

CEA LETI Innovation Days yearly event. Also, CEA is starting to

participate to the ETSI ENI ISG, where CEA is planning to exploit the

results from 5G-MiEdge related to artificial intelligence for wireless

Page 27: D5.1 First report on dissemination, standards, regulation ...IEEE ICC 2017 and 2018, EUCNC 2017 and 2018, and IEEE GLOBECOM 2017. To strengthen the collaboration between Asian (Japan

networks. Similarly FHG is successfully disseminating results related to 5G-

MiEdge in the 3GPP framework.

4. Universities (URom, TTech): will generate new patents from their research

results and spread their values to the industry and the society through major

international conferences, workshops and journals. The possibilities to

introduce latest project research results in the education courses of students

at the university are also paramount aspects of the exploitation of the project

results. During the second year of the project TTech has filed on patent based

on its results on WP1 and WP3.

4 Conclusion
