It’s All Because of YouI am honored to have served as your District Governor for 2011 – 2012. As your outgoing District Governor, I enjoyed serving you. I am humbled by your confidence in me and I fully enjoyed working with you. Please permit me this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to my home club, Healing Communicators Club 7178, our District Executive Council, my advisers, numerous mentors and the fantastic members across our District for supporting me and affording me the privilege of leading this phenomenal district.

When I joined Toastmasters in 2000, if anyone had told me that I would be a future District Governor, I would have left the program immediately! From 1995 to 2000, I visited numerous Toastmasters clubs in search of the club that was best suited for me. Finally, on a visit to Healing Communicators Club 7178, I felt that connection I was looking for and I joined. For the past twelve years Toastmasters has transformed, polished and shaped me into the person I am today.

I reflect on the development of a baby from conception to birth. How is it possible for a tiny egg to be transformed into something that breathes, laughs and cries? So magnificent a creation, we will love it unconditionally! Although my transformation in Toastmasters took more than nine months, if I could have another opportunity to undergo the blood, sweat, tears and growing pains of becoming a more effective communicator and leader, I would do it all over again. And it's all because of you!

During this transformation process as a leader, I realized self must be put aside, sacrifices must be made and service is the key! I learned that lip service is not an option, weakness is forbidden and patience is truly a virtue.

On July 1, 2012, we will reach another milestone in the history of our district; the new District 48 will be born. This birth gives way to more leadership opportunities and an intense focus on the growth and development of every member. Each District team is poised and ready to serve you. They are excited for the wonderful opportunity to lead, coach and inspire members to achieve greatness.

When life appeared to be more like a bed of thorns than roses; when situations seemed too difficult to face or when I became overwhelmed and felt like giving up, I relied on words of the Serenity Prayer to keep me charging forward: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.” (Reinhold Niebuhr)

It is my wish that these profound words would also give you the strength to keep charging forward when you, too, may feel like giving up. Remember, service is the key! Weakness is forbidden and patience is a virtue! District 47 family, I love you all and I extend a big THANK YOU from the depths of my heart for my transformation and growth!

Sincerely,

Pamela D. Rolle, DTM

I have resolved that I will finish the Toastmasters year on a high note. Did you take advantage of the Open House incentive?

Will your club be at charter strength (20 members)? At the end of the 2011-2012 Toastmasters year, will your club have more members than it did at the beginning of the year?

What are you resolving to do?

A Bittersweet Moment in our District's History

On the one hand, our success is a validation of teamwork and dedication. The wildfire of excitement is catching and our district has spawned yet another new (Everything is Great in District 48!) district. On the other hand, it is a time to say farewell to our close friends and allies across the lake and across the pond.

These past years have meant so much. I want to thank our beautiful District Governor and leader, Pamela D. Rolle, for her eloquent leadership style, my fellow governors for their support and, most importantly, our members who attend meetings regularly and become more confident as a result. If you are reading this, this is meant for you: Toastmasters changes lives, so THANK YOU for playing such an important part in this dynamic of change.

May your words flow freely and easily and when they reach someone, may that person be transformed. Go forth and be the best Toastmaster you can be!

Thank you,Kathy Furbush DTMD47 Lt. Gov. Education & Training - West 2011-2012District 48 Governor Elect 2012 - [email protected] ~ www.district48.org

Congratulations to Our Achieving Members & Distinguished Clubs!

We've had a tremendous year here in District 47 with our educational and training goals. More than 80% of our clubs had 4 or more officers trained both terms and we averaged 5 out of 7 officers trained per club. We've never averaged that many officers trained per club in the past. As of June 24, 636 members completed a CC, 297 members completed an AC and 574 members completed a leadership award. This means that members are meeting their goals to improve their communication and leadership skills. This means that clubs are delivering on the Club Mission Statement. This means that Toastmasters members are making a difference in each other's lives. We also have 126 of our clubs that are Distinguished as I write this article. We know that many clubs are still working diligently on finishing the year strong.

It has been a great pleasure to serve as one of your two Lt. Governors Education and Training this year. We experienced two fantastic conferences, great TLI's, and tremendous growth among our club members. As District 47 splits on July 1, we have set a great framework to continue the tradition of excellence in southern Florida and The Bahamas. I encourage you all to make the most of your Toastmasters membership. Prepare for your speeches with intention to learn, give evaluations that motivate our members while challenging them to become better, and share your story with others who are not sharing in the personal development and growth offered by the Toastmasters program.

Thank you,Matt KinseyD47 Lt. Gov. Education & Training - East 2011-2012District Governor Elect 2012-2013

Sparsha Soars on the Wings of Youth LeadershipBy: Murali Venkatappa, Area 33 Governor

Four summers ago, in 2008, one of my friends asked if I would like to enroll my daughter, Sparsha, into a Youth Leadership Program. He told me that it would last for eight weeks and would be conducted by Mr. Vijayn Nair, a Distinguished Toastmaster. I had no clue what that meant but “Youth” and “Leadership” sounded good to me. I asked my daughter if she would be interested. “No”, she said. “Then you are going anyway”, I stated. I assured her that she would

thank me one day.The first session of that Youth Leadership Program is when I got introduced to Toastmasters. I got to know that there exists an organization with a mission to provide an opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills. That is when my love for public speaking was rekindled. I made sure I attended the rest of the sessions, along with my daughter, soaking in every bit of advice, every tip that Mr. Nair had to give about public speaking. As I saw improvement in my daughter, I realized I had improved too except that I still was not speaking publicly. Remember, this was a Youth Leadership Program and simply being young at heart won’t let you qualify for the program!I set out on a quest to find a Toastmasters club where I could actually speak. I probably did not put in a real effort as it took me two years to find one. I officially joined Toastmasters in July 2010 and my life hasn’t been the same since.Toastmasters has not only helped me take the fear out of talking, it has helped improve my self esteem. It has helped me speak up, speak out and speak my conscience. It has also taught me to speak what I believe in and to practice what I speak, with passion and with reason. It has given me a platform to experiment, to fail and to get up and do it all over again without the fear of ridicule, without the fear of consequences. Where else will you find such a nice, encouraging audience, who, even when you speak for a whole three minutes over your allotted time will still write you the nicest comments?

When I was elected president of my club, a fellow toastmaster mentioned that he noticed a spring in my step and wondered if it was because I was now the president. While it was definitely a nice feeling to be the president of the club, the spring in my step though, was the benefit I was reaping as a result of the constant encouragement and constructive feedback that I received from every Toastmaster out there.I always thought Toastmasters was all about public speaking but little did I know that it would be my leadership abilities that would get a boost. Taking up leadership roles at Toastmasters has given me the confidence to convert challenges into opportunities. It has given me the courage to take on responsibilities that I would otherwise have avoided, be it at Toastmasters, at work or on the personal front. More importantly, Toastmasters has taught me to set my goals and to plan and achieve them, something I severely lacked all my life.Toastmasters might just be the groundwork for something bigger in my life, the measure of which might not necessarily be monetary or fame but the sense of achievement, the satisfaction and happiness that it brings with it. It is like the bamboo seed. It stays underground for almost five years before it sprouts and then when it does sprout it grows to be 100 feet tall in no time. What do you think it was doing for those five years? It was spreading its roots underneath, for it knows those roots are necessary to support the tall bamboo shoot later in its life. I want each one of you to get the best out of your Toastmasters experience. I want each one of you to feel the way that I do today, a sense of gratitude towards Toastmasters. I want Toastmasters to do to you, what it did to me. Induce a spring in your step.As for my daughter, I am proud to say that she placed first at the Pasco County Tropicana Speech Contest this year. “Thank You Dad, for pushing me into the Youth Leadership Program,” she said.

Congratulations to These Successful Club Coaches! By: Emiy Drenberg, DTM & Hieu Huynh, DTM, LGM-East

Did you know that serving as a Club Coach satisfies one of the requirements for the Advanced Leader Silver (ALS) educational award? To earn credit toward the ALS award, the Club Coach must lead their assigned club to Distinguished Club status. Delivering the Moments of Truth module from the Successful Club Series is a great way to teach members of the struggling club how to recognize threats to the club’s stability and progress. This program also helps members accept and assume responsibility for the club’s future. Toastmasters.org sums it up best:

Hippocrates said, “Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work.” Similarly, you should enable the clubs you coach to continue to grow and thrive. Only after you help the club to achieve Distinguished status and help the members find their inner doctor, may you truly claim success. (The First Class Club Coach)

Then and NowBy: Sparkie Lovejoy, Division H Governor

This is the image I was having of us yesterday. I remember Kathy saying something like, "If it's going to be done, this is the group to do it." I agreed totally.Last year on that stage I thought...We will ace it this year because...Robert is having a second turn at Division Governor so he has experience…Rachel ran the year before and didn't get it, so now that she has her opportunity she'll soar, plus she has a lot of friends and support.Cathy's organizational skills, and follow through will make it for her.Jeanine is so involved in TM and every aspect of it. She's got it in the bag already.Sparkie, me, enthusiastic and determined…Kristin knows how to get anything done. Knowledgeable, resourceful, community creator…Bett, enthusiastic, committed, determinedLori was district secretary and has seen what the Division Governors had to do and probably thought, "I can do better than that." And so will do an awesome joband Mitch... dedicated, committed.I thought we had it in the bag in the beginning, then as I watched our numbers and saw we were on the bottom, I was surprised. When we began slowly creeping up I kept waiting for our big surge to the top. It happened to slot 15. Now I'm ready for our second surge to take us to the top position.I believe it can happen easier and quicker by holding the intention and allowing the universe to support our vision and our actions. At the beginning of our term, I was thinking we were competing against each other; however, now I see it like the dogs in a dog sled race. We are pulling our sled to the finish line (I watched Snow Buddies last night). We'll do well the more we work together with heart.I would like to open up the communication to support each other to reach our own goals that we had last year when we got these positions.I'll start. My goal last year was to be a President's Distinguished division and to have fun doing it.I will do it. I only need two more areas to be distinguished and they are on the way.Think back to last year. What goal did you set? Will you share it with all of us?

Sparkie Lovejoy, Division H Governor

A Year of FirstsBy: Thomas Plant

The Palm City Orators Club of Toastmasters has had a great year! We are proud to have met the criteria needed to achieve four of the goals for growth set by Toastmasters International. Each of these achievements has been a “first” for our club. For many years we have struggled to attract new members. This year when we launched the “Talk Up Toastmasters” membership drive, we not only added five new members to our club, but, by doing so we were able to bring our overall number of members up to twenty. This accomplishment not only earned us the points needed to qualify as a Distinguished Club, but by acquiring nine out of ten possible points we also qualified as a President’s Distinguished Club. We are especially proud of Toastmaster Amy Eason, who achieved the goals needed to become a Distinguished Toastmaster in April of 2012, another “first” for our club. Amy has been a leader and dedicated member of Palm City Orators since 2005. We congratulate Amy for reaching this milestone. We’d also like to offer a hearty “Well done!” to all of our members for their role in making Palm City Orators an outstanding club. Our growth reflects the efforts of each member to meet challenges both individually and collectively in our quest to become better Toastmasters.

My Dream Team!

Thank you Pamela for being the classy lady that you are and for allowing me the priviledge of serving as Sunshiner Editor for District 47.

It has been an absolute joy to serve in this capacity with two of the finest gentlemen in Toastmasters. Tony Longley is the one who keeps us on task, with an eagle's view of the end goal while Terrence Pratt soars with hawk-eyed vision in search of misspellings, errant commas, and clarity of communication. Because of their united attention to detail and demand for excellence, we have been able to produce a quality product that has continued to improve with each and every publication.

Thank you Tony and Terrence. It has been an absolute joy working with both of you this year.

Sincerely,Emily Drenberg

Advanced Articulators Open HouseBy: Kathy Furbush, DTM - LGET West & Matt Siewert

The Advanced Articulators, Tampa’s newly formed Advanced Toastmasters Club hosted an Open House to a packed room of almost 50 attendees. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as Michael Hamlin, Toastmaster of the Day, set the tone for the afternoon with a “fake” phone call from District Governor Pamela Rolle, as a way of reminding folks to turn off their cell phones. The well-planned program featured Kathy Furbush, District 47’s LGET West, and Shawn Purvis with a mini-workshop on humor. Advanced Articulator Toastmasters who contributed to the success of the day included Toby Martini, who presented a manual speech on tips for remembering names; Claudia Bryant, who offered a manual evaluation; Adam Hsu, who led the audience in a round-robin evaluation, and Gerri Almand, who closed the meeting with a novel “turncoat” Table Topics game that produced many laughs.Guests enjoyed gourmet cookies while mingling and socializing. Best of all, the newly formed Advanced Articulators increased membership from 10 to 22, representing a 120% increase in membership in just one exquisitely planned and executed Toastmasters program. So... we went from near DEAD to Distinguished in nine months. What an awesome ride to end this year for this club. If your club is facing membership challenges, why not plan an Open House? Try it…It works!

How I’m getting to the International ConventionBy: Michael Brown, Area 23 Governor

While I have been a Toastmaster for almost 9 years, I have never attended an International Convention. Like many others, I only have so much money. Paying for a 5-6 day trip like that can be a bit costly when you start factoring in airfare, hotel and the like. So when I knew that the 2012 International Convention was coming to Florida, I wanted to go. Being so close, the travel costs for the trip would be much lower. But still, it is a bit pricey.I have a way that I am covering a good portion of the cost.My employer pays for training. This has long been the policy of the company. The company pays for internal training. They will pay for training by outside groups. They will pay for attending technical conferences. And they will sometimes pay for further education, like college degrees. Of course, it’s not unlimited. We have to speak with our bosses who have discretion as to what is paid for, as each department gets a training budget.I called up my boss and reminded him that I’m involved in Toastmasters. I said, “Toastmasters has an International Convention coming up. Would the company pay for me to attend the conference?” I told him the cost. He agreed. It’s considered training/personal development. The cost is not as high as some of the technical conferences I’ve attended (those can be 2-3 times as much). So my company is paying for my Convention registration. Also, since this is training, I don’t have to take vacation time! The hotel cost I plan on covering, but even then I hope to find someone to share the room, and hence lower the cost.So for those of you who want to attend the Convention, but are put off by the cost, there are ways to address that. If you work for a company, check with them to see if they will cover some of the cost as training. The worst that could happen is they could say no.

Open House Showcase

Hieu Huynh, Ron Rice, D47 LGM - East D47 LGM – West

Program Dates: January and July Retaining members is essential to the health of a club, and gaining new members is equally vital to its success. For potential members visiting a club, first impressions are paramount. Toastmasters' new Open House Showcase is a great way for clubs to make that first impression a positive one and to attract new members. Clubs that are successful can earn discounts on useful products. How? Follow these simple steps:

Hold a successful Open House in January and/or July.

After the Open House takes place, email your complete marketing package to

[email protected] with your club name and club number in the subject line

and include the following (bulleted items must be included to qualify):

A completed, signed guest list

Pictures of the event

The Open House agenda

Sample marketing materials used to host the Open House (e.g. fliers, brochures,

guest packets, other promotional items)

Your advertising plan

You may also send video footage if you'd like. As many as 50 of the clubs that gain the most new members as a result of their Open House events will receive a 30% discount on their next club order. If any ties occur, the quality of the clubs' marketing packages will determine the winner. All new members of a club must have been on the applicable Open House guest list. The member's join date must be in January or February (for the January Open House) and in July or August (for the July Open House). Complete marketing packages must be received by February 7 (for the January Open House) and August 7 (for the July Open House). Membership applications and payment for members must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than February 29 (for the January showcase) and August 31 (for the July showcase). Clubs do not get credit for transfer or charter members. The 30% discount expires six months after the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.
