Term coined by Clayton Christensen in his book TheInnovator's Dilemma to denote a technology that aside (or

because of) its technical merit has revolutionary economics Classic examples:

    > Digital photography disrupted film

    Disruptive Innovation

    Sun Confidential: Internal Only 2

    > Steamships disrupted sailing ships> Minicomputers disrupted mainframes

    > EMC (with RAID- & cache-based storage) disrupted IBM in DASD

    > Linux/x86 disrupted UNIX/RISC

Often involve a redistribution of margin: lower overall marginbut much higher volume and broader market

  • 8/9/2019 d1-2-SUN

    3/30

Over time, the value in a storage product has trended from hardware tosoftware...

...but storage hardware has remained unnecessarily custom (i.e.,expensive and slow)

Sun has built an appliance out of industry standard components

Why is the S7000 Series disruptive?

    Sun Confidential: Internal Only 3

    ,

...and because COGS of software is $0.00, Sun need not monetize thesoftware directly software development costs can be paid withmarginal increase in revenue

Adds up to disruption: 2X performance at cost The 7000 Series would have been disruptive based on these

economics alone, but along came flash memory...

  • 8/9/2019 d1-2-SUN

    4/30

Flash memory now sits between DRAM and 15K RPM disk in terms ofperformance and price:

    > Flash is microsecondsper op, where DRAM is nanosecondsand disk ismilliseconds

    > Flash is tens of dollarsper GB, where DRAM is hundreds of dollarsper GB anddisk is dollarsper GB

    The disruptive effects of Flash

    Sun Confidential: Internal Only 4

Seeing this trend, we integrated flash into a hybrid storage pool, whereread-optimized flash is used as a cache

Cache is up to 600GB in currently shipping products, but curves aresteep: headed much higher (and much cheaper!)

For random-read workloads, flash + 7200 RPM drives yields 4Xperformance of 15K RPM drives at cost!
