ASSOCIATION IN ACTION
COMMITTEE UPDATE
April found VMA promoting and representing its membership across several areas, beginning with an industry update given to the Norfolk Economic Development Authority.
The Association holds seats on numerous government boards and committees. In April, VMA participated in meetings of the U.S. Coast Guard Area Maritime Security Committee and two of its subcommittees, the Marine Transportation System Planning Subcommittee and the Cyber Security Subcommittee. VMA also participated in meetings of the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences Advisory Board and the Virginia Offshore Wind Development Authority.
VMA’s Art Moye is the current president of the National Association of Maritime Organizations (NAMO) and he presided during its semi-annual meeting April 11 & 12 in Washington, D.C. NAMO is comprised of maritime-related organizations throughout the United States and represents its members at a national level in all matters affecting foreign or domestic waterborne commerce using U.S. ports. The agenda included updates and discussions on topics that
included the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers & Dredging Funds, Customs & Border Protection Programs, NOAA Navigation Programs, and the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service.
VMA continued its involvement in progressive meetings with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) representatives to inform their work developing a voluntary tool to quantify supply chain and other direct economic impacts of weather related disruptions on the Hampton Roads region’s transportation infrastructure. This included an extensive port tour and overview of the diversity of business activities along our port’s waterways.
State of the Port addresses delivered by John Reinhart, CEO & Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority, were hosted in VMA’s Central Virginia Chapter in Richmond and in Front Royal by the new Shenandoah Valley Chapter. Both events were well attended and built momentum for the growth of the chapters.
STRATEGIC PLANNING (April 3 & 12): The committee concluded a review of the status of the goals and specifi c objectives from the 5-year plan for the years 2012-2017. In March, the membership provided valuable insights through a survey and the survey results were thoroughly discussed and considered in the context of strategic planning. The next step was to begin a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis of the Association.
CARGO OWNERS (April 6): The inaugural meeting of the Data and Technology Subcommittee was held to begin exploring ways information, data, and technological resources can improve port operations and overall logistics to make the Port of Virginia more competitive. The focus of the fi rst meeting was a discussion of current plans and possible improvements as the Virginia Port Authority moves forward with converting all their facilities to the Navis (N4) terminal operating system. This included a discussion of plans for the new PRO-PASS system.
TOWING & BARGE OPERATORS (April 12): Following regular agenda updates and reminders, the committee reviewed a recent Coast Guard policy letter regarding new regulations governing tugs under Subchapter M. Other topics included updates on current dredging activities, operational issues at certain bridges, the completion and publication of the Atlantic Coast Port Access Route Study and upcoming meetings and activities.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE SYMPOSIUM (April 21): The emphasis during April was coordinating the presenting speakers and panels and promoting event registrations. The committee conducted fi nal planning and preparations, working toward a successful delivery of one of VMA’s signature events, the International Trade Symposium (ITS).
CENTRAL VA- Met April 25th, discussing the growth in chapter membership, communication of chapter news and to plan future gatherings, including a fall Mixer.
The Central Chapter will hold their next meeting on Monday, June 12th, 11:00. Location TBD.
SHENANDOAH VALLEY- Held their inaugural meeting on April 26th. Chairman Devon Anders, lead discussion in establishing the goals and objectives for the chapter, including outreach to potential member businesses and organizations with whom to partner.
The Valley Chapter will hold its next meeting on June 21st, 11:00am at Virginia Inland Port.

How do you defi ne safety in the workplace? Not all industries require a person’s life to be put on the line. Does that mean workplace safety does not apply to those jobs? There are many other types of safety incidents aside from physical injury.
To accountants and bankers, safety is tied to numerical accuracy; to educators, safety could mean taking care to protect the curiosity of young people; in healthcare, safety has a lot to do with creating habits that affect those who receive care (the patients) more so than those who deliver care (the employees). As such, safety is also about minimizing human error.
Renowned safety expert Lucien Leape once said: Incompetent people are, at most, 1% of the problem. The other 99% are good people trying to do a good job who make very simple mistakes and it’s the processes that set them up to make these mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes, but there are things that we can do to minimize their occurrence. Safety training is important, but it’s only as effective as the employees are engaged—are willing to go the extra mile, take personal ownership for the quality of their work, and are proud of their jobs.
Highly engaged employees are more likely to take error prevention practices seriously, and improving employee engagement is often the most effective way to ensure processes don’t set people up for failure. This is true whether you are trying to avoid physical injuries or other costly errors.
Three ways to improve employee engagement are to:1. Let employees know their contribution is meaningful2. Recognize people for a job well done3. Treat everyone with dignity and respect
Safety isn’t just about providing training. It involves keeping employees happy, healthy, and motivated. No matter how safety is defi ned in your organization, it cannot be achieved unless employees are committed and involved.
