Parish Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899. Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments. Theme: Justice and Peace

The seasons of Advent and Christmas evoke within us feelings of “peace on earth and

good will to all.” One of our standard hymns during this time goes, “Let there be peace

on earth and let it begin with me!” There is a great deal of talk about peace on earth

and, “Let it begin with me!” There is a great deal of talk about peace, not only within the

human heart but among nations. We hope that nations will not train anymore for war.

People will see sacredness and dignity of the human person in everybody without barriers

and prejudices. We hope words will be turned into plowshares. This time of the year, our

thoughts turn to peace and love.

However, we must ask ourselves the following questions? Do we deserve peace? Have

we been agents of God’s peace in our daily lives? Have we sown seeds of reconciliation

and conversion? If your answer is no, begin now to work for peace, reconciliation and

conversion. Before we go around hoping for peace we must in the words of Pope Paul VI-

“Work for justice!” There can be no peace if we do not hunger and thirst for justice. We

may have order. We may have domestic tranquility. We may be smiling. The cities may

be quiet and the universities calm. But none of this means we have peace. Peace follows

Tema: Justicia y Paz

Las temporadas de Adviento y Navidad evocan en nosotros sentimientos de "¡Paz en la

tierra y buena voluntad para todos!" Uno de nuestros himnos habituales durante este

tiempo dice: "¡Que haya paz en la tierra y que comience conmigo!" Se habla mucho sobre

la paz en la tierra y "¡Que comience conmigo!" Se habla mucho sobre la paz, no solo

dentro del corazón humano sino también entre las naciones. Esperamos que las naciones

no entrenen más para la guerra. La gente verá lo sagrado y la dignidad de la persona hu-

mana en todo el mundo sin barreras ni prejuicios. Esperamos que las palabras se convier-

tan en arados. En esta época del año, nuestros pensamientos se convierten en paz y amor. Sin embargo, debemos hacernos las siguientes preguntas? ¿Merecemos la paz? ¿Hemos

(Continúado de la página 1) La paz sigue a la justicia. Porque si deseamos la paz sin justicia, solo

terminamos con la tiranía.

Si la paz es más que un deseo o un sueño, debemos trabajar por la justicia.

Naturalmente, nunca habrá perfecta justicia y paz en este lado del reino

de Dios. El pecado distorsiona nuestra justicia y esclaviza nuestra libertad

con la ilusión de la libertad. Nuestra paz es a menudo el quietismo. Sin

embargo, nada de esto nos excusa de trabajar por la justicia, la libertad y

la paz. Simplemente debemos ser prudentes y realistas sobre el pecado y

la condición humana. Estamos limitados. Pero, de nuevo, nuestras

limitaciones no nos eximen de aliviar las cargas de los pobres, los

amor, prudencia, y una sabiduría que nos guía en la búsqueda de las cosas

que realmente importan. Buscamos a Dios y sus caminos. Sin embargo, en

realidad realmente permitimos que Dios nos alcance. Porque Dios siempre

nos está buscando. Somos nosotros los que usualmente huimos de Dios

y tratamos de encontrar nuestra paz en todas las cosas equivocadas.

Debemos llegar a valorar los dones del Espíritu que el óxido no puede

destruir, y la polilla consume o el ladrón irrumpe para robar.

La imponente figura de Adviento, Juan el Bautista, llama a un bautismo

de arrepentimiento y conversión. No puede haber paz y libertad si no

abrimos nuestros corazones a la gracia de Dios. Debe haber un cambio

de corazón para apartarse del egoísmo, el orgullo y la voluntad de poder.

Porque si nuestros corazones no cambian, tampoco lo harán nuestras

instituciones y comunidades. Y si nuestros corazones, instituciones y

comunidades no cambian, continuamos violentando al Cuerpo de Cristo

ya toda la creación. Es solo cuando permitimos que la justicia de Dios

transforme nuestro ser interior que podamos decir: “¡Paz en la tierra y

buena voluntad para todos!” Y “¡Que haya paz en la tierra y que

comience conmigo!” Por la justicia de Dios trabajando en nosotros

produce la rica cosecha de libertad, paz y alegría que nadie nos puede

quitar.

If peace is to become more than a wish or a dream, we must

labor for justice. Naturally, there will never be perfect justice and

peace this side of the kingdom of God. Sin distorts our justice and

enslaves our freedom with the illusion of liberty. Our peace is too

often quietism. However, none of this excuses us from working for

justice, freedom and peace. We must simply be prudent and

realistic about sin and the human condition. We are limited. But

again, our limitations do not excuse us from relieving the burdens

of the poor, the stranger, the oppressed, the powerless, and the

disrespected.

Our readings for this Sunday the second Sunday of Advent, clearly

highlight the importance of justice. The book of (Baruch 5: 1-9) is

for Jews who live in Babylon and suffer all the indignities of any

minority group. Baruch reminds them that they are special and of

great importance. They are the people of the Lord. Self-pity is not

allowed. In powerful imagery Baruch writes, “Wrapped in the

cloak of justice for God, bear on your head for the mitre that

displays the glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the

earth your splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace

of justice, the glory of God’s worship”

The justice of God (that is, His generosity and fidelity) is such that

the exiles will be gathered once again in the land the Lord gave

them long ago. Our brokenness of heart will be healed by God’s

justice and grace. God is the Lord of all, who rules with justice and

mercy and peace. The Lord expects his people to labor for the

same mercy and peace. God is the Lord of all, who rules with

justice and mercy and peace.

St. Paul writing to the Philippians, that the community “May be

found rich in the harvest of justice which Christ has ripened in

you, to the glory and praise of God.” The harvest of justice is one

which produces the fruits of love, prudence, and a wisdom which

guides us in seeking the things that really matter. We search for

God and his ways. Yet in reality we really allow God to catch up

with us. For God is always seeking us. It is we who usually run

from God and try to find our peace in all the wrong things. We

must come to value those gifts of the Spirit which rust cannot

destroy, and moth consumes or thief breaks in to steal.

The towering Advent figure, John the Baptist calls for a baptism of

repentance and conversion. There can be no peace and freedom if

we do not open our hearts to God’s grace. There must be a change

of heart to turn from egoism, pride and the will-to power. For if

our hearts do not change, neither will our institutions and commu-

nities. And if our hearts, institutions and communities do not

change, we continue to do violence to the Body of Christ and to all

creation. It Is only when we let God’s justice transform our inner

being that we can say, “Peace on earth and good will to all!” and

“Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me!” For God’s

justice working in us produces the rich harvest of freedom, peace

and joy which no one can take from us.

Social Action Committee News “Our Giving Tree”

Our Giving Tree is up and decorated with ornaments made by OLGC students. Please take one and return the item on it as soon as possible. Our goal this year is the same as last year, we would like to make it a warm winter for all, therefore we are asking for hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, blankets, and sets of towels. Christmas distribution begins on December 8, 15 and 22. Again, thank you for your assistance this year and always. May God bless you always! Merry Christmas!
