    D K Jayaraman - Concert

The concert held at the Madras Music Academy in the December season of 1982.

D K Jayaraman learnt initially from his sister, D K Pattammal, but it wasn't long before he proved himself toan illustrious brother to an illustrious sister. DKJ, as he was popularly referred to, was a simple person andhis music reflected his simplicity and straightforwardness. That, however, is not to be taken that his musicwas simplistic. After his initial training, he learnt widely and from an unusual number of people, most ofwhom were masters of the art - Papanasam Sivan, Koteeswara Iyer, Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, andAriyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar were just a few of them. This helped add depth to his music and also enabledhim to learn many compositions of diverse composers. He had an enviable repertoire of songs, not just ofthe trinity and the old masters, but also of the new composers, and it included a good number of Tamilcompositions. His technical competence was second to none, though he did not make it stand out in hismusic, but rather let the music speak. DKJ was also enthusiastic about singing the songs composed by hiscontemporaries and peers. His enthusiasm for and joy of life, and his emotional honesty reflected in hismusic and gave it a quality that unsurprisingly most music lovers could identify with.
