To be a good Enterprise System, addressing potentialcontingencies is essential.

    Types of potential risks:

y Exemplification of risksSudden increase in customer demandUnexpected system down and disaster recovery: Myriads of

factors that can cause system failure.Data loss: Data protection and backup is necessary.External Attacks: Attack from hackers.

I nterruption of business system: This will lead to seriousfinancial losses which could be fatal as these losses are notcovered by Insurance.

U nplanned downtown: Any unplanned system failure may leadto huge financial as well as credit losses.

Ex: eBay had to shut down its enterprise system and had torebuilt it which caused them $5m in revenue losses and $5bloss in corporate value loss.

It connotes the importance of continuous servicefor customers in various business situation bydelivering 24 hours and 365 days service.

T his stimulate I T companies to develop moreadvanced technologies that involves features andsolutions, such as fault tolerant components, disaster recovery, data backup, partitioning andsecurity policy.

But to design and implement such continuoussystems is challenge for business enterprises.

T he primary issue is the Cost: Backup network isalso to be built in case that a primary network

gets into failure. All these entail a significantamount of money.

An other issue is the complicatio n of the e n terprisesystem: ES need to cope up with the wide range of customers and hence more complication of theES .

L astly is the operatio n al errors.

    D IS A STER RECOVERY

S ince the 9/11 disaster, the importance of internet indisaster recovery systems have become greater thanever.

E ven a short period of system down can causetremendous impact on the companys businessperformance.

T he key concept on disaster recovery solution is howfast and reliable one backup system can take overprimary system.

Mode 1: H ot standbyy A backup system is on a standby.y On recognition of symptom of failure on the primary system the

backup system begins to run.y The backup system will serve until the primary system comes

    back on the cluster.

Mode 2: M utual takeover y In this one of the system is defined as neither primary nor

backup system.y Each system runs its own application.y Once one system falls down, the other system takes over the

applications of the system going dowm.

Server Problems:y Server B takes over the disks that used to belong to server A with

problems.y Server B activates the secondary network interface and takes

over the As IP address.y Server B serves for the clients of server A.

Network adaptors problem:y IP is transferred to the standby network adaptor from the

primary one.y The primary network adaptor takes over its role back from

the standby adapter after being repaired.

Partitioning is a technological concept that can offer Enterprise Systems greater flexibility and cost efficiency.

Partitioning can be done in case of underutilization dueto smaller no. of transaction or overutilization due tolarger no. of transaction.

Company can implement multiple operating systems andapplications in one server by drawing on the partitionsolution.

The server can then change allocation of applicationcapacity.
