The relationship between information sharing, informal contracts and trust onperformance of supply chain management in the SMEs of batik (Article)

, ,

Department of Industrial Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, IndonesiaUniversitas Diponegoro, Semarang, Indonesia

AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this study is twofold: to examine the effect of information sharing and contract on increasingthe trust level in the relationship between the batik small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) and supplier and toexamine the trust on performance of a supply chain related to the procurement of raw cotton fabric (mori).Design/methodology/approach: This research used primary data collected through interviews and closedquestionnaires using a five-point Likert scale. The sample included 65 people, including batik SME-owners inPekalongan, a Central Java city. This research was conducted using partial least square (PLS) through SmartPLS 3.0software to analyze the hypothesis. Findings: The results of hypothesis testing indicate that trust between owners ofSME and their suppliers has a significant positive effect on the performance of supply chain management (SCM).Strong trust between batik SME- owners with their suppliers will be beneficial for both parties. Among other things, trust can reduce unnecessary cost and activity, reduce the waiting time for the arrival of raw material, reduce thenumber of inventories and increase profit and customer satisfaction. This result has also show that informationsharing and informal contract have a significant positive effect on trust between batik SME-owners and their morisuppliers. In this case, information sharing has a higher effect on trust compared to informal contract. Broaderinformation was distributed to the batik SME-owners and their suppliers, resulting in stronger trust between them.Research limitations/implications: The limitations of this study include the relatively small sample size and datacollection method used to determine the effect of trust, the number of the antecedent variables of trust and the typeof scale used to measure the performance of the supply chain. Suggestions for future research may include expandingthe scope of the data collection to other regions in Indonesia; adopting a dyadic approach and longitudinal research inproviding evidence on the effect of trust as a component of an interactive activity along the supply chain; adding othervariables that contribute towards increasing the trust between SMEs and their suppliers (such as commitment); andenhancing the performance measurement of SCM by using a direct measure of financial and non-financialperformance instead of recording the perception of the batik SME-owners. Practical implications: As the scale of theirbusiness increases, it is better if the batik SMEs can enhance information sharing and informal contract with suppliersto promote the development of trust. In this case, to ensure that batik SMEs will have better information sharing fromtheir supplier, it is better if the batik SME-owners using the criteria of supplier willingness to share detailedinformation when they select the new supplier. Then, to increase the role of contract on trust, it is better if owner ofbatik SME learn to understand the written contract processes and procedures as their business scale increases. Socialimplications: The research confirms that information sharing, informal contract and trust between batik SMEs andtheir suppliers can have a positive effect on the performance of the supply chain. It may encourage more SMEs andsuppliers in the batik industry to build better information sharing, informal contract and trust as a bottom line for theeconomic and non-economic growth of their business. Originality/value: The conceptual model used in this study isoriginal, built from past research about the relationship between information sharing, informal contract and trust onthe performance of the supply chain. Besides, the selection of the sample is also original, which in this case is on thebatik SMEs which have informal contracts. This case has still been rarely studied, and the research is therefore highlyvaluable. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Question Answer

It is an interesting paper with several participants in the study. However, the paper would be even better by clarifying and reducing the amount of text to really highlight the important parts of the study

Thank you for your appreciation. As your suggestion, I would like to make this paper more clarify and highlight the important parts of the body. Thank you

1. The paper shows new information but it could be even clearer what the major novelty is. Is it e.g. new because of the type of industry, regions or SMEs?

As we mentioned in the originality, the conceptual model used in this study is original, although that model is built from the past research about the relationship between information sharing, informal contract, and trust on the performance of supply chain with trust. So the major novelty of this research is related to the conceptual model. Besides that, the novelty of the research also related to the selection of the sample of the research. In this case, the research on informal contracts used SMEs of batik as a sample is still rare.

2. Yes, the paper demonstrate knowledge of the relevant literature. However in some sections, e.g. 2.1, literature is discussed which is not further referred to later in the paper. Therefore some of the text could be shortened and more to the point.

The purpose of section 2.1 is to explain the concept of governance, differences between supply chain management and supply chain governance, and there are four theoretical perspectives that can be used to view the governance concept in the supply chain. However, I agree with you that the section 2.1 does not give any added value to this paper. So, I have deleted this section.

3. It is not entirely clear to me why this particular area and industry was chosen for the study. Is it for example because of access to data, the industry's importance or previous research that has led to the study described in this paper? In 3.1 it is stated that the sample taken is 65 SMEs and in 4.1 that the number of respondents were 65. Was it a respond rate of 100% or were more companies invited in the beginning of the study?

I have explained why this area and industry is chosen for this study. Please check the last paragraph on page 4 (see the text with blue color). “Batik was chosen as an object of this study for several reasons. First, batik is of famous heritage in Indonesia. Batik is manufactured using wax-resist dyeing techniques applied to cotton fabric called mori. Batik patterns can be drawn manually or printed with a copper stamp called a cap. Batik has a deep root in Indonesian culture with its rich and various creative and artistic traditions. In October of 2009, batik was acknowledged by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as "Intangible World Heritage” (Meutia, 2013). According to Antara-Online News, in 2011, the value of batik

Question Answer

production reached $52.33 million, up by 13% from $ 46.35 million in 2010. Pekalongan was chosen as the region of the study because Pekalongan is one of a central batik industry in Indonesia as shown by the number of SMEs in batik companies in 2011. The number of batik SMEs reached 634 units, which consist of 507 small enterprises and 127 medium enterprises.” The response rate is 86.67%. Please see the explanation “In this case, to ensure that the final amount of collected data meet the prerequisites of PLS, the 75 closed questionnaires were administered to the owner of batik SMEs in Pekalongan based on purposive sampling technique. Hence respondents were selected in the sample based upon some suitable characteristic of sample members. The researcher chose batik SMEs that produces their own batik and have informal contracts with the supplier of mori. From 75 closed questionnaires, we have received 65 valid responses, which represents a response rate of more than 80%.” Please see that additional explanation in section 3.1 (the text with blue color)

4. Yes but in the conclusions it is suggested to use written contract. That has however not been studied, only informal contract

I have added the relationship between the result of our research (informal contract) and formal contract in this section. “Then, to increase the role of contract on trust, it is better if the owners of batik SMEs can consider accompanying the informal contract with formal contract or it is better if they can formalize the informal contract toward the formal contract. Although this research and other, such as Poppo and Zenger (2002) indicated that informal contracts have a clear positive relationship with trust, the formal contracts are seen can be used to replace a reliance on the informal contract. Some argue state that formal contracts complement informal agreements by facilitating their self-enforcement (Lazzarini et al 2004). Others argue that formal contracts merely substitute for social norms that effectively support information dealings (Zenger et al., 2000). A formal contract will help manage business processes and batik production as well as overcome a complex demand that might occur”.

Question Answer

5. Yes, the paper identifies implications for research, practice and society. However, the practical and social implications could be discussed more. For example the paper states that the SMEs could use supplier willingness to share information as a criteria when selecting suppliers to increase trust. Is this only a one-way direction or could trust make it easier to share information?

I have added the various type of information sharing could be used by the SMEs and their supplier. I also have added the short explanation about the dyadic relationship between information sharing and trust. “Moreover, to ensure the role of information sharing in giving the maximum benefit for the relationship between SMEs and their supplier, it is better if the owner of batik SMEs and their supplier can adopt various types of information sharing, such as sales forecast and the amount of inventory, real-time demand, pricing of mori, and order shipping information. As explained in the introduction, some of batik SMEs faced the shortage of raw material due to the mismatch between supply and demand and delay and the shortage of raw material due to the price increase of cotton fabric (mori) from US$ 0.6/meter up to US$ 0.72/meter. To overcome this problem, batik SMEs can share the sales forecast, the amount of their inventory, and real-time demand to the supplier of mori. By sharing sales forecast and the amount of inventory to the supplier of mori, the supplier of mori will have the better prediction for mori are needed by batik SMEs which may avoid the batik SMEs going out of stock. Information about the real-time demand to the supplier of mori allows the batik SMEs to receive the timely supply of mori from suppliers. In the other side, the supplier of mori also can share the pricing and shipping information which inform the possibility of a price of mori rise and inform how much of the order is being shipped by the supplier and when the order will arrive at the batik SMEs. Sharing pricing information would lead batik SMEs to a quick determination the amounts of working capital need to buy mori. Sharing shipping information would lead batik SMEs to a quick determination of the bottleneck in a supply of mori and take some action to avoid the batik SMEs decrease their production. The information sharing has the dyadic relationship with trust, so information sharing not only the antecedent factor of trust but also could make the information easier to share. The positive effect of trust on information sharing can be seen in the research conducted by Dirks (1999), Dirks and Ferrin (2001), and Fu and Lin (2014).”

Question Answer

Please see the additional text with blue color in the section of conclusion

6. The text could be shortened to be more to the point. Sentence structure and grammar need to be improved as well as jargon e.g. not to use "doesn't" but rather "does not" in 2.2 on page 10.

I have sent this article to the proofreader to improve the grammar as well as the jargon I have change doesn’t with does not

Question Answer

Major revisions is recommended in the language English. Some of the terms in relation to Supply Chain Management has been discussed unnecessarily, like Supply Chain Governance & antecedent of trust, they may be removed from the paper. Purpose of paper is not successfully defended.

Thank you for your comment. • To improve the English language of this paper,

I have submitted this paper to the proofreader. • I have removed the explanation about supply

chain governance as your suggestion. However, I am still retaining the explanation about antecedent of trust, because this explanation is needed to build the hypothesis

• I have written the purpose of the paper “To address the above issue, this study has two purposes. The first was to examine the effect of information sharing and contracts on increasing the trust level in relationships between the batik SMEs and suppliers. Second, the study aimed to examine the role of trust on the performance of supply-chain relations with the procurement of raw cotton fabric (mori).” Please see on page 7; the text with brown color

2. Why literature has not been reviewed for information sharing. Informal contract is a sub part of Information Showing. Why has it been taken as independent variable? Why formal contracts has not been considered under Institutional Trust.

I have provided an explanation about information sharing, especially with regard to the effect of information sharing on trusts. It is the focus of this research. However, as your suggestion, I am also giving some explanation about the definition of information sharing, several types of information sharing between enterprises and effect of information sharing to

Question Answer

the enterprises. You can see on page 9-10, the text with brown color “The importance of information sharing as an antecedent factor of trust can be found in research conducted by Zhao and Yin (2009), Kwon and Suh (2004), Nyaga et al. (2010), and Chen et al. (2011). Information sharing among members can lead or build trust (Zhao and Yin, 2009). Kwon and Suh (2004) stated that information sharing is significant in building trust, where it enables firms to develop an understanding of each party's routine and develop mechanisms to solve problems. The higher the ability to deliver information within the supply chain, the lower the cost incurred and decline in shipping time (Lin et al., 2002). Information sharing has a positive influence in building trust where the amount of information that is delivered results in more trust being established in the supply chain (Nyaga et al., 2010; Kwon and Suh, 2004; Chen et al., 2011). The type of information shared between partners in the supply chain can be differentiated as tactical information (e.g. purchasing, operations scheduling, logistics) or strategic information (e.g. long-term corporate objectives, marketing and customer information). Prior research on the importance of formal and informal information sharing between partners in the supply chain has shown that effective information sharing can enhance visibility and also reduces uncertainty (Brennan and Turnbull, 1999; Handfield and Bechtel, 2002). Information sharing allows enterprises to access data across their supply chains, allowing them to collaborate in activities such as sales, production, and logistics. The extent to which information is shared can create opportunities for enterprises to work collaboratively to remove supply chain inefficiencies, and thus has a significant direct impact on the relationship between buyer and the supplier. The ability to access important information across the supply chain can also provide other opportunities. For example, when additional supply chain information becomes available, firms can take advantage of this increased visibility to modify existing actions or plan future operations (Hsu, et al. 2008”

Question Answer

This research makes differences between informal contract and information sharing. The short explanation had been added in the section “Trust and antecedent factor of trust”, page 13. “This research makes differences between informal contract and information sharing, although informal contract also related to the information exchange between the enterprises and their supplier. According to the previous explanation, informal contract tends to be the unwritten agreement that set out the expectation between two parties (Frankel et al., 1996. Mostafavi, et al, 2012), whereas the information sharing tends to be the extent to which an enterprise openly communication about important and sensitive information to its partners or the willingness the business partners in distributing the critical and proprietary information to the other partners in supply chain (Li et al., 2005, Shou et al. 2012)”

Why have formal contracts not been considered under Institutional Trust? According to the condition of the object of research, this study did not use the formal contract as an antecedent variable of trust. This study used informal contract the as an antecedent variable of trust. However, the relationship between formal contract and institutional trust can be explained as follows. Institutional trust refers to the existence of an institutional framework that regulates the relationship between the trust and the trustee (Luna-Reyes et al., 2004). This institutional framework can consist of laws, regulations or certification bodies that provide penalties for a party cheating in the interaction or provide certification of the trustworthiness of the trustee by a recognized third party. Moreover, According to Tejpal et al (2013), trust can be identified in different forms:

Characteristic trust. The characteristic perspective of trust deals with factors, such as perceptions, reliability, dependability, credibility, commitment,

Question Answer

honesty, benevolence, fairness, goodwill, emotions, etc.

Rational trust deals with factors, such as the economics of relationship, dynamic capabilities of partners and technology adoption.

Institutional trust deals with factors, such as control mechanisms between members through legal frameworks, commercial law, contracts, agreements, bank guarantees and insurance

Anticipatory trust is the kind of trust, in which someone trusts the other since one expects him or her to act rationally. It is the normal pattern of behavior that forms the foundation for trust. The main element in the (implicit) decision to trust is the analogy between the present case and former cases, in which the other has acted in a trustworthy way.

Responsive trust. The main vulnerability of responsive trust is that presupposed shared moral values do not necessarily lead to trust.

Calculus-based trust (CBT). A calculus-based trust which most often related to the workplace, people tend to operate on a reward-punishment system. The value of completing a task or a goal is not seen as personal satisfaction, but rather because of the consequences of doing so. In CBT, trust is built slowly.

So, based on the previous explanation, it can be seen that institutional trust relies on the institutional framework or control mechanisms between members through legal frameworks. This condition may explain why a formal contract is an antecedent factor of institutional trust. We did not put the above explanation about the relationship between formal contract and institutional trust in the paper since the focus of our paper was informal contract, not formal contract

3. Nothing has been mentioned about the method of selections of 65 respondents.

Please see the explanation “In this case, to ensure that the final amount of collected data meet the prerequisites of PLS, the 75 closed questionnaires were administered to the owner of batik SMEs in Pekalongan based on

purposive sampling technique. Hence respondents were selected in the sample based upon some suitable characteristic of sample members. 4. The outcomes have not been linked in any way to the concerned Industry.

I have linked the outcome to the problem faced by batik SMEs. Please see the additional text with blue color in the section of conclusion “As explained in the introduction, some of batik SMEs faced the shortage of raw material due to the mismatch between supply and demand and delay and the shortage of raw material due to the price increase of cotton fabric (mori) from US$ 0.6/meter up to US$ 0.72/meter. By sharing sales forecast to the supplier of mori, the supplier of mori will have the better prediction for mori are needed by batik SMEs which may avoid the batik SMEs going out of stock. Sharing shipping information would lead batik SMEs to a quick determination of the bottleneck in a supply of mori and take some action to avoid the batik SMEs decrease their production”

5. Has attention been paid to the clarity of expression and readability, such as sentence structure, jargon use, acronyms, etc.: English is very poor. ideas could have been expressed in less words.

To improve the English language of this paper, I have submitted this paper to the proofreader.

Recommendation: Major Revision

Comments:

I still believe that the paper would gain from being shorter and more to the point.

Thank for your comment

Additional Questions:

1. Originality: Does the paper contain new and significant information adequate to justify

publication?: The major novelty is now clearer.

Answer: thank you, I am very happy that you can find the major novelty of this paper

2. Relationship to Literature: Does the paper demonstrate an adequate understanding of the

relevant literature in the field and cite an appropriate range of literature sources? Is any significant work

ignored?: Good that the governance section has been removed (former section 2.1). The text could be

improved further, e.g. more selective on which references to use, to make it shorter and more to the

point.

Answer: thank you, I have removed some of the explanation to make my paper shorter.

3. Methodology: Is the paper's argument built on an appropriate base of theory, concepts, or

other ideas? Has the research or equivalent intellectual work on which the paper is based been well

designed? Are the methods employed appropriately?: Yes, now the method of selection has been better

explained.

Answer: thank you, I am very happy with your comment

4. Results: Are results presented clearly and analyzed appropriately? Do the conclusions

adequately tie together the other elements of the paper?: The conclusion-section is too long. A lot of

the text could be moved to the discussion section where it fits better.

Answer: I have moved some of the explanation in the conclusion-section to the discussion section

5. Implications for research, practice and/or society: Does the paper identify clearly any

implications for research, practice and/or society? Does the paper bridge the gap between theory and

practice? How can the research be used in practice (economic and commercial impact), in teaching, to

influence public policy, in research (contributing to the body of knowledge)? What is the impact upon

society (influencing public attitudes, affecting the quality of life)? Are these implications consistent with

the findings and conclusions of the paper?: Yes, the paper identifies implications for research, practice,

and society but the way to present it needs to be improved.

Answer: Thank you, I try very hard to improve the way to present my paper.

6. Quality of Communication: Does the paper clearly express its case, measured against the

technical language of the field and the expected knowledge of the journal's readership? Has attention

been paid to the clarity of expression and readability, such as sentence structure, jargon use, acronyms,

etc.: The text has not really been shortened and the paper would be much better if you could be more

specific and to the point. The sentence structure and grammar still need more attention.

Answer:: Actually, for the first review, I have sent the paper to the paid proofreader (it is very expensive)

before the paper sent to this journal. However, as your request, I sent again (for the second time) my

paper to the paid proofreader. So, I hope you can accept my paper since I have sent my paper to the

proofreader twice.
