It is with a heavy heart that I must bid the Browns-town Township Downtown Development Authority fare-well. After recently marrying into the military community, the transient lifestyle now demands that I relocate out of state. Before I trade snowflakes for palm trees though, I wanted to take a moment to reiterate my appreciation for the opportunity to work for such a progressive DDA Board and community. In my two and a half years here I have been for-tunate enough to be a part of a team pro-viding new amenities to residents, support

to local businesses, and con-tributing to the overall better-ment of the community. To continue and expand on the DDA’s efforts, I would like to warmly welcome Sue Trussell and Vern Gustafsson to the DDA team as assistant directors. These individuals have exemplary backgrounds promoting and growing the influence of the public sector. With their wide range of experiences, I am confident this complementary pair will assist in furthering the overall

goals and mission of the DDA. All the best! Kaitlyn Campbell-Hutchison

transformation to digi-tal recording performed by VTP Corp. As part of the upgrade, home viewers watching the recorded versions through Comcast cable or AT&T U-verse will be able to see the same presentation screen images as people in the Board Room. The transition to digital recording also makes it easy for the meetings to be trans-ferred to a DVD, which simplifies the process for uploading the video to the township’s Web-site for easy access online. The goals of the upgrade were to both provide additional gov-ernmental transparency and move to a system that is more technologically advanced and, as a result, more efficient to operate. All meetings of the Board of Trustees as well as the DDA and the Planning, Zon-ing and Recreations commissions are broadcast live and recorded for replay. The recorded meetings typically are all broadcast the next day at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. In addition to the following day, all

meetings from the week will replay the following Sunday according to the follow-ing schedule: 8 a.m. — Beautification/Historical 10 a.m. — Recreation 12 p.m. — Zoning Board of Appeals 2 p.m. — Planning Commission 4 p.m. — Downtown Development Authority 6 p.m. — Board of Trustees

Jerry and Patty Goodwin have operated their business on Allen Road in Brownstown since 2004.

The year was 2004 and Jerry and Patty Goodman were ready to open their own busi-ness. Jerry, who had more than 30 years in the music business, wanted to locate in the vicinity for the convenience of his clients. They came upon a 600-square-foot shop that was available at 19486 Allen Road, on the west side of the street near Downriver Bus Repair, between Sibley and King roads, in Brownstown Township. “In 2004, there weren’t too many build-ings available,” Goodman remembered. “My

wife thought this was the cutest place. I originally thought it wasn’t big enough. We talked to the landlord, who said that when-ever we were ready to expand, he could ac-commodate us.” And Music Work-shop was born. The

store may be small in stature, but it’s big on supplies and service. The shop is packed with instruments, parts (including hard-to-find parts) and accessories, school band supplies, amplifiers, music books, song sheets, method books and DVDs. The staff provides high-quality repairs and music les-sons for all sorts of instruments in three studios. “We offer a free set up on every instru-ment we sell (a $45 value),” Goodman said. “That includes neck adjustment, action and intonation of the instrument to make it play

well and sound good.” Goodman started taking guitar lessons when he was 8 years old. He began teaching at age 16 and has been doing it ever since. He played for several years professionally in the 1970s. Music Workshop has 70 students of various levels. Many of them take guitar lessons, but others play the banjo, violin or piano. Music lessons also are available for the bass, mandolin, ukulele, voice, theory and all brass and woodwind instruments. “We have students that have been com-ing here for years,” Goodman said. “They’re into it. Some practice three hours a day. One went on to the School of Rock Camp and blew everybody away.” The workshop also is home to beginning musicians who purchase a less-expensive guitar or another musical instrument and take lessons. Starter guitar packages are available. Goodman said there has been a shift in guitar sales in recent years. “I have noticed in the last several years that the acoustic guitar has become more popularized,” he said. “I used to sell 2-to-1 electric guitars over acoustics. Now it’s 2-to-2 acoustics over electric. I believe it’s be-cause acoustics are now a bigger part of heavy metal music. The folk style of many singers has made the acoustic guitar popu-lar again.” Longtime customer Randy Cole of Lin-coln Park said he is always impressed with the parts available at Music Workshop and

In Business In Brownstown

enjoys how the shop is so well organized and inventoried. Cole buys new and used parts, including strings for his guitar. “I come here for the lowest prices in town on the best-quality stuff,” said Cole, who is retired from Great Lakes Steel. “It’s small. It’s intimate. Other places have eight million guitars and kids who just learned what a guitar was last week. These guys have integrity, honesty and you don’t have to worry about anything.” Strings, reeds, drumsticks, drumheads, harmonicas and picks are discounted every day. Goodman spends much of his time repairing instruments – guitars, of course, but also band instruments, amps and equipment. He has staff to repair key-boards as well. “Anything music-related we take an interest in,” he said. Area musicians gather to perform out-side Music Workshop on various warm-weather weekends. Goodman said he plans to expand that to an acoustic festival probably toward the end of August. He will invite local talent to perform acoustic mu-sic an entire weekend. The shows will be free for performers and the public. The Goodmans are prepared to expand at the current location when the economy improves. “We love it here,” Jerry Goodman said. “Brownstown has been very good to us. We’re kind of in the middle of seven differ-ent communities. We love the area.”

Music shop owners strike a positive chord offering lessons, instruments and supplies

near King and Telegraph. Other family-friendly features are coming soon as well, including volleyball courts, a pond, and walking and biking trails. Due to construction, temporary community garden plots have been constructed behind the police sta-tion carport for use this year. In future years the space will remain a garden for those not wanting a raised bed, along with several dem-onstration plots to be cared for by the Garden Club. Parks and Recreation currently is accepting reservations for 10-by-10 plots for $10 by calling the de-partment at (734) 675-0920. Demolition is being completed on the former bus garage, which is in the area where new soccer fields will be con-structed. Another key element of the plan calls for the creation of two new baseball dia-monds on the north side of King. Once the new diamonds are in place the current diamonds on the south side will be demol-ished and replaced by a soccer field that incorporates a sled hill, as well as new parking areas that emphasize much more landscaped green space than seen there at present. Plans also were firmed up last fall for a new clock tower that will include an elec-tronic sign that will provide updated infor-mation on community events, including movies and music in the park. Plans also continue to move forward on the construction of a public safety me-morial that is expected to be constructed near the Event Barn and historical house.

Contact Sue Trussell at the Brownstown Township DDA at (734) 675-5911 or [email protected] if you would like to receive a vendor application. The market is co-sponsored by the Brownstown Township DDA and the Beautification/Historical Commission. Both organizations are looking forward to a great market sea-son in 2012.

Market on the move to new location

The road work on West Road between Telegraph and Hall Roads is being delayed until the summer of 2013 due to new Fed-eral Highway Administration regulations. Though the delay is not great news for area motorists, there is a silver lining. Two large road construction pro-jects already are sched-uled this year, and the West Road project would have added to the expected traffic conges-tion if it had been initiated under the original timetable. The Michigan Department of Transporta-tion is reconstructing Telegraph from Vree-land to West Road. MDOT also is overseeing the I-75 at Dix-Toledo interchange recon-

struction project that will run through No-vember. The West Road project will widen that one-mile stretch to five lanes that will in-clude two lanes running both east and west

and a center turn lane. It will be conducted by the Wayne County De-partment of Public Ser-vices and will be funded through a federal Trans-portation Economic Development grant.

The plans remain available for review at Brownstown Township Hall. The scope of the project includes road bed reconstruction and intersection im-provements, as well as some sidewalk im-provements.
