A Christmas message from the MayorAs the snow lay all around deep and crisp and even it gave us an early reminder that the festive season was fast approaching – also the season of peace and good will to all men. With that, on behalf of the Town Council Members and staff, Judith and I are delighted once again to have this opportu-nity to send out Christmas greetings to all of the Town Crier’s readers, whether local or dispersed over land and sea. We also couple these wishes to the dedicated and hardworking Town Crier staff.I was asked to carry on for a further year as your Mayor, a privileged position I was proud to accept. A major part of the Mayor’s remit is of course, charity. With the overwhelming generosity displayed last year, the goal post had been set rather high but undaunted we set out to raise funds for Andrew Tomling dancing school,

The Tearaways and CATS theatre groups, Shildon Amateur Boxing Club, The Monday Club and Shildon Running & Athletic club.The support and generosity from the people of Shildon, local businesses and or-ganisations has once more been outstanding. Please accept our grateful and sincere thanks for the

manner in which you have donated so freely. Last year I wrote of the rise in global greenhouse gasses, that turned out to be hot air. I spoke of polar ice meltdown, unfortunately it didn’t, it just moved to Shildon. What is not in doubt is my admiration for the community spirit and generosity of the people of Shildon in this period of great economic difficulty.At this time of year my thoughts extend to families and friends, to all of those in danger and difficulty, whilst being ever mindful of all our armed forces at home and abroad. Judith and I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and more prosperous New Year.

Local groups achieve CAVOS awardsAt the recent Community and Voluntary Organisations Support Christmas Party and Awards Evening held at Shildon Civic Hall, two of our local groups picked up awards. The Children’s Amateur Theatre Shildon (CATS) group for 8 to 11 year olds was awarded for it’s two successful produc-

tions performed in town. The all-singing, all-danc-ing, all-acting group are currently rehearsing for a third, “Oliver” to be staged in March 2011.The Shildon Children and Young Peoples Action Network (SCYPAN) also received a special achieve-ment award. The group

operates within Shildon and the local area together with other groups such as the Shildon Youth Council and The Shildon Yella to plan, promote and execute activities and programmes to help improve the quality of life for young people and adults in our local community.

Santa Claus is comin’ to town!Santa will be visiting the Town Square in Shildon on Wednesday 22nd December from 11am to 1pm.

“Come along, he would love to meet you!” said one of his elves.Don’t forget to come outside your house and

wave to Santa on Christmas Eve too.He will be making a tour of the town on his sleigh from 5 o’clock.

The real meaning of Christmas

Byerley Road Pre School held their Christmas concert last week; The First Nativity, 'The Real Meaning of Christmas.’ The hall was packed with proud mothers, fathers and grandparents who came to watch the 38 children, aged 3 and 4 years, perform this

special Christmas play. This year, Byerley Road Pre School were privileged to have the services of David Tomlinson, Curate at St. John's who was narrator.Parents and teachers were delighted with the perfor-mance of the children, who had only been practising

for four weeks.On Friday morning there was a Christmas Party for all the children, with a visit from Santa.Byerley Road Pre School classes are held Monday to Friday from 8am till 6pm, with a Breakfast Club and an After School Club.

Police appeal to find community centre ownerA break in took place between 11th and 14th December at the former Friend’s Mission Hall at Close House.A water heater, a stainless steel sink and some copper piping was taken from the kitchen of the disused community centre.

The building, which has not been used for four or five years, has suffered severe water damage as a result of this theft.PC Stewart Walker said, “It is unclear who owns the building and, therefore, I am not only appealing for witnesses to the crime

This hardy group of motor cycle enthusiasts from the Aycliffe Bike Club, endured the bitter cold and icy road conditions on Sunday 19th December to visit their friends, Thermals and Vests MCC at Elm Road WMC in Shildon.They collected toys and games which had been donated for their Christmas toy appeal. The gifts will

be distributed throughout the area to disadvantaged children and the Wear Valley Women’s Refuge.A spokesperson said, “A big thank you from both bike clubs to all the good people from Aycliffe, Shildon and the surrounding area who donated toys and games. Be assured they will brighten the faces of many children this Christmas!”

People in Shildon and Middridge are being encouraged to ‘knock next door’ and help out friends and neighbours during the bad weather.Durham County Council is issuing the call to action as the snow and freezing temperatures return.Residents are encouraged to:• Be a good neighbour by calling on those living near by to check if they need anything.• Look after the vulnerable by getting in touch with people who are ill, older or on their own and may need a helping hand.•Keep drives and footpaths clear by shovelling snow for friends and neighbours if they struggle to do it themselves and need to go out.Lesley Jeavons, Durham County Council’s head of adult care, said, “The cold weather can signifi-cantly increase the risks to those who are already vulnerable, so it’s particu-larly important that we look after one another.“We’re asking residents to spare a thought –

I remember as a small boy coming home from school on dark winter evenings. As I turned the corner of our road I could see the light shining in the window of our house at the far end. Instinctively I would quicken my step. Partly it was the desire to get out of the cold, partly the attraction of the programmes I was going to watch on the TV, but mostly I was hurrying just to be home. I wanted to be back in the place where I knew I belonged. I wanted to be free of the anxieties I sometimes felt walking by myself along the darkened streets. I wanted the simple reassurance of warmth and light. During these cold and difficult weeks leading up to Christmas life has not been easy for many people. Some, espe-cially the infirm and elderly, have been unable to leave their houses at all. Others have known the stress of travel in appalling conditions and of managing work commitments with unexpected child care demands. For others there have been the greater burdens of family difficulty, loss or unemployment. During hard times we all long for the hope and security that light and warmth symbolise. We long for welcome and for rest, for a place truly to call home. One of the great wonders of the Christmas story is that Jesus came to make his home here with us. He came to share our burdens and our difficulties, but also to bring us his joy, love and peace. In the midst of hard times we always have a place to call home. What have you put on your Christmas Tree this year? Any really old decorations that that were used 50 years ago or are they new ones? Any lights? What do you put at the top of the tree? A star? An angel? Either one reminds us of the birth of Jesus. Have you put a piece of straw on the tree? You might think it would be pretty useless on its own, a single piece of straw.When Jesus was born the Roman army and government controlled Palestine. During that time they had a phrase for worthless things. They used to say, “Well, that’s not worth a straw”. But if you think about it, straw is very useful. We use it to make beds for animals and, in some parts of the world, for people. We use it to thatch roofs on houses in lots of places here and abroad. It is used for making clay bricks. We use it to protect crops and vegetables from frost and ground damage. We use it for packing things safely. I am sure you can think of many others.But why put a piece of straw on a Christmas Tree? It’s a reminder about Jesus. He was born in a stable where there would have been a lot of straw. At the end of His life He was treated by the Romans, and others, as being worthless – not worth a straw. Even at Christmas many people think of Jesus as worthless and discard Him – they don’t give a thought about Him, even on His birthday.We can know Jesus as being worth far more than we could ever understand. Attacker spared jailA man who broke his girl-friend’s jaw and perforated her eardrum was spared jail after the court heard how he had already fallen victim to “local justice”.Jason Ainsley-Weighell of Bouch Street, Shildon attended court with a black eye as his lawyer Jonathan Walker told Teesside Crown Court how he has needed to be resuscitated three times by paramedics and doctors after he was beaten up by her angry family.Mr Walker continued to explain that Ainsley-Weighell suffered fractures to his cheekbone and jaw and was on a life support machine in hospital for three days. The assault came months after he attacked his partner last July, and was followed by another vigilante attack last Friday which left the defendant black and blue.

The court heard how their six year relationship was littered with fights and on July 24th last year they had a drunken argument. Nigel Soppitt, prosecut-ing, said that after she was pushed onto a bed and punched in the ear and face, the victim tried to call for help but Ainsley-Weighell smashed her phone. She then tried to flee but had her arm pinned in a door.Judge Howard Crowson told him “It should end in a prison sentence, but I take on board the local justice that you have had meted out to you on more than one occasion.”Ainsley-Weighell was handed a restraining order to stop him harassing or going near his now former partner and given a nine month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

Crier Christmas RecipesBaileys Chocolate Cheesecake

Ingredients• 100g/3½oz butter• 250g/8¾oz digestive biscuits, crushed• 600g/1lb 5oz Philadelphia cream cheese• 25ml/1fl oz Baileys

• 100ml/3½oz icing sugar• 300ml/10½oz whipped double cream

• 100g/3½oz grated chocolate• 200ml/7¼oz whipped double cream to garnish• cocoa powder, to dust

Method1. Melt the butter in a pan and add the crushed digestive biscuits. Mix well until the biscuits have absorbed all the butter.2. Remove from the heat and press into the bottom of a lined 18cm/7in springform tin. Place in the refrigerator and allow to set for one hour.3. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Lightly whip the cream cheese then beat in the Bailey's and icing sugar. Fold in the whipped cream and grated chocolate. When smooth, spoon evenly onto the biscuits.4. Refrigerate and allow to set for a further two hours. Once set, remove and decorate with whipped cream and cocoa powder dusted over the top. Serve.

Shildon ease Bishop asideShildon AFC played their first game in a month when they entertained local rivals Bishop Auckland in the league on Wednesday 15th December 2010. Having lost heavily to Bishop’s in the Durham Challenge Cup in October, the Railwaymen were seeking revenge.They couldn’t have wished for a better start, scoring in the 2nd minute with a blistering strike from 25 yards from Craig Price.Bishop’s levelled the score on 7 mins. when Darren Richardson, from 20 yards shot low, past keeper Gareth Young.The home side began to find their rhythm, passing the ball around in their usual manner and on 19 mins. they took the lead when a 3 man move from the half way line saw Chris Hughes round the keeper.Four minutes later it was 3 - 1 when Andy Johnson worked the ball down the right to Lee Chapman who

coolly coverted.On 31 mins. a Lee Chapman free kick found Chris Hughes 12 yards out, who calmly drove the ball home.Minutes later Chris Hughes was storming through when he was pulled down by Bishop’s No. 4 Lewis Brown in the box. The spot kick was converted by Lee Chapman for 5 - 1.Shildon were running rampant tearing through the Bishop’s defence leaving them vulnerable every time Shildon attacked.On 38 mins. Sonny Andrews was through but his shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the post.Right on half time another four man move was finished off by Jamie Harwood, whose blistering shot was unstoppable for 6 - 1.With the games result decided, the 2nd half was always going to be

less frantic, however, the home side were still in full control.On 64 mins. Jamie Harwood’s header hit the post, then on 75 mins. a brilliant run by Harwood found Lee Chapman who chipped the ball over the keeper for his hat-trick.One minute later Chris Hughes, was denied his hat-trick when he was judged to be off-side.Considering that the Railwaymen were several players short on the night, the score line of 7 - 1 shows how much strength Shildon have in their squad.Final Score: Shildon 7 Bishop Auckland 1Goalscorers: Price 2.
