PICK UPTHE PILE
Hello first off Irsquod like to state that this is not an article just an idea that I wanted to pass by everyone
I have a project that would incorporate the Pick up the Pile campaign and give young entrepreneurs a chance to flex their prowess Each neighborhood would set up a stand very similar to the lemonade stand and educate dog walkers on the hazards of pet waste They would have pamphlets to hand out and then sell the window decals that are easy to install and remove The proceeds for the decals will go to a no kill animal shelter or rescue group for their city The window decals are part of a national movementpardon the punto educate people about the hazardous bacteria that pet waste carriesThis is an opportunity to build skills in our budding citizens (our children) to be motivated for a cause to be conscientious of our environment and philanthropy If you would like to be a part of this campaign please contact me See attached window decal it clings on the inside for easy onoffitrsquos not permanent just for this campaign Tracy Johnsoninfopickupthepilecom
The Green Thing In the line at the store the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her
own grocery bags because plastic bags werenrsquot good for the environment The woman apologized to him and explained ldquoWe didnrsquot have the green thing back in my dayrdquo The clerk responded ldquoThatrsquos our problem today Your generation did not care enough to save our environmentrdquo
He was right -- our generation didnrsquot have the green thing in its day Back then we returned milk bottles soda bottles and beer bottles to the store The
store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled so it could use the same bottles over and over So they really were recycled
But we didnrsquot have the green thing back in our day We walked up stairs because we didnrsquot have an escalator in every store and office
building We walked to the grocery store and didnrsquot climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks
But she was right We didnrsquot have the green thing in our day Back then we washed the babyrsquos diapers because we didnrsquot have the throw-away
kind We dried clothes on a line not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters not always brand-new clothing But that old lady is right we didnrsquot have the green thing back in our day
Back then we had one TV or radio in the house -- not a TV in every room And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them) not a screen the size of the state of Montana
In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didnrsquot have electric machines to do everything for us When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap Back then we didnrsquot fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn We used a push mower that ran on human power We exercised by working so we didnrsquot need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity
But shersquos right we didnrsquot have the green thing back then We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic
bottle every time we had a drink of water We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull
But we didnrsquot have the green thing back then Back then people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school
or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service We had one electrical outlet in a room not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances And we didnrsquot need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint
But isnrsquot it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didnrsquot have the green thing back then

(CROSSROADS) a United Way agency provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance With thousands in the juvenile justice system the need for mentors is growing
Mentors must be at least 21 years of age commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session There are many sites areas (Katy Clear Lake Chimney RockBellaire and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model
The program is very simple flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 ndash 17 yrs old) Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives
The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers CROSSROADS is symbolic of where the youth we serve are standing - at a critical point in time in their lives
