What’s going on? Rapid manufacturing, ranging from 3D printing, CNC milling and laser cutting to computerised lathing and sewing, has for a long time promised a world of highly customised personal products. Decreasing costs mean that these technologies – originally meant for prototyping – can double up as small-batch manufacturing techniques to cater for ultraniche or bespo- ke product markets. These machines do not require any specific molds or tooling designed for each individual object, so – in principle – each and every object they churn out can be unique. Uniqueness becomes a matter of generating unique blueprints. The challenge is to make extreme personalisation and customisation both meaningful and practical. The „Create Your Own 2011“ Exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore the future of how things will be conceived of, produced and consumed in the near future. It highlights the freedoms and constraints offered by the new manufacturing technologies, and an embodiment of the different attitudes towards them; some exhibits are commercially successful businesses while other projects are playfully critical or visionary. .
