INTRODUCTIONWelcome to The Station’s programme for the Spring term 2014. We’re going straight into our second term of the academic year with exhibitions of work by young artists, Urban Arts Space courses, professional performances, services support and youth clubs, as well as an exciting new programme of courses for young people who are finding themselves out of education, training or employment.

DANCE Urban Arts Space: Breakdancing Classes

Ages 12 - 19

Tuesday 14th January onwards, 4.30 - 6.30pm

No experience necessary

The Station’s Breakdancing classes are for those that want to develop technique as well as learn a new style. The first 5 sessions will be taking place around Bristol so call in advance to find out where. After half term they will be back at The Station. It’s a friendly and encouraging class for those that want to dance. New members are always welcome.

Urban Arts Space: Street Dance Classes

Friday 17th January onwards, 4.30 - 6.30pm

The weekly Street Dance classes at The Station are for those that want to express themselves through hip-hop dance and develop technique in a friendly and supportive environment. The classes take place every Friday and start from the 17th January with a break for the half term. New members are always welcome!

SWDT CYGNETS: Youth Ballet Company

SWDT CYGNETS is a youth ballet company led by South West Dance Theatre and the Creative Youth Network at The Station. Throughout the term the company rehearse weekly working on a unique storyline which will draw on techniques from other dance styles and be shown in an end of term performance.

Carnival Dance Baton Open to all ages6 week project every Saturday

from 11th January, 11am - 1pm

No experience necessary

Exploring Carnival through the art of Masquerade in an African and Caribbean context using dance, art, music and spoken word. The aim of the project is to provide an introduction to masquerade and work creatively to start building a Mas Band ‘section’ for various performance opportunities.

This exciting and unique project is led by Cleo Alberta Lake, an experienced theatre and dance practitioner, specialising in African, Reggae and Urban dance styles. She is the current Chair of St Pauls Carnival and is also an ADAD Trailblazer researching festivals in Ghana and traditional dance in Jamaica.

Love&SexAges

Monday 13th January, 7pm

State of Emergency presents a brand new hard hitting dance theatre show entitled Love&Sex aka Per-Mission that explores issues of love, sex and consent and examines the emotions, the pressures and the comedy of sexual relationships.

Through dance and music, Love&Sex invites audiences to reflect and question their own behaviour and that of others. Targeted at young people aged 13 to 25, the show highlights the connection between sexual health and emotional well being.

With choreography by the internationally renowned Colin Poole and an original soundtrack by SoE’s own Steve Marshall. This piece has been developed in partnership with the Creative Youth Network and Brook during State of Emergency’s artist residency at The Station.

MEDIAUrban Arts Space: Radio JournalistsEvery Thursday from the 16th January, 4.30 - 6.30pm

No experience necessary

The Urban Arts Space Radio Journalists is a group for young people that are interested in gaining more experience in media and radio. The group will work on the programming, production and presenting of their own radio show that will be aired weekly throughout The Station and as podcasts on The Station’s website. Those that join the club will be given the opportunity to complete their Arts Awards during the term should they wish.

Urban Arts Space: Film Making ClubEvery Monday from the 13th January, 5 - 7pm

No experience necessary

Join the Urban Arts Space Film Making Club and work with a professional film-maker on a weekly basis to direct, produce, edit and screen your own films. You’ll have the chance to experience different types of film such as music videos, short films, animation and documentaries. At the end of the term the films made will have their own film screening at The Station. Those that join the club will be given the opportunity to complete their Arts Awards during the term should they wish. The award can go on your CV and go towards UCAS points.

Desh Project: Homeland/ MotherlandEvery Tuesday 7th January - 24th March, 4.30 - 6.30pm

No experience necessary

Do your parents or grand parents originate form the Indian sub-continent? Are you interested in animation, film or music? The Asian Arts Agency are looking for budding animators and creative types to take part in an intergenerational project exploring and interpreting South Asian culture and its place in Bristol history.

Throughout the project you will work with professional artists to explore different animation techniques, digital story telling and music production, gaining new skills.

UAS+ Journalist MasterclassSaturday 1st March 12.30 – 2.30pm

No experience necessary, but an interest in journalism required.

Join Martin Booth a journalist and editor from Bristol Culture in this exciting one off opportunity to learn about the art of journalism. Whether you’re a budding reporter, want to learn the tricks of the trade or would just like to find out what it’s like to be a journalist come along and meet one of Bristol’s finest professional journalists.

MUSICStudio 7 Ages

16 - 25 Every Tuesday, 6 - 9pm

A basic level and skill in singing is required.

Studio 7 is led by professional Motown singer and radio presenter Kizzy Morrell. Every Tuesday, Studio 7 turns the Main space at The Station into a practice performance area where individuals get the support, tuition and experience to gain confidence, skills and stage presence. Each month Studio 7 run an open mic at The Station to give you opportunities to perform.

Calling all singers and acoustic musicians Ages

11 - 24 We’re looking for young people to start a choir with a difference at The Station and want to hear form you if you’d be interested in joining! The different types of music that the choir will cover are hip-hop, Motown, acoustic music, rock, pop, reggae and more.

Temple Record Label Launch

Temple Records is a new record label in Bristol organised and created by young people. This exciting project supported by Creative Youth Network is looking to discover unsigned artists in the wealth of Bristol’s musical scene. We aim to raise the profile of these musicians and give them the opportunity to not only work within the trade but to also build relations with industry professionals.

UAS+ Visualising Sound

PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONSGuitar, Singing, PianoAll levels of experience welcome

The Station is offering private tuition for young musicians that would like to learn how to play the Piano or the Guitar, or would like to have a private signing lesson. The lessons are 30 minutes each for a course of 10 weeks. The tutor will create a personal lesson plan for your level and interest. Lessons are available to fit into your diary. Do you want to understand how music makes us move? How different genres of music and technologies move us? How many sound waves are produced in music? This is a one off opportunity to work with one of our specialist tutors to experiment and explore the science of music.

Listening can be a difficult concept for many people. This musical masterclass in listening gives you the opportunity to discuss if there a right answer to the tonality of music or is it down to taste? To discover what instruments are present? To discover the importance of listening.

Take to distortion and leave clean... Scientific correctness or artistic merit? Discover the relationship for all amplified sound. In this specialist session you will work with the gain and experiment with the amplification of music. It will be a noisy session.

THEATREImprovisation & Physical Comedy Workshop

Thursday 30th January, 6 - 9pm

In partnership with CYN, LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) is offering a free workshop on Improvisation and Physical Comedy, suitable for anyone with an interest in the performing arts.

Led by a LAMDA tutor this entertaining and highly practical workshop will provide an introduction to the basics of improvisation, the rules of comedy and how to apply these principles in performance. In addition, participants will have the chance to find out more about vocational training opportunities at LAMDA.

VISUAL ARTS Urban Arts Space: Young artists

Every Tuesday from the 14th January, 4.30 - 6.30pm

No experience necessary

Work with a professional artist in our young artists group to explore materials and different art methods such as screen printing, graffiti, sculpture and keeping a sketchbook amongst others. The group will be working towards an exhibition of work that will take place outside of The Station. Throughout the term there will be the opportunity to work towards a bronze or silver Arts Award.

Urban Arts Space: Young Photographers

Every Wednesday from the 15th January, 4.30 - 6.30pm

The Station’s young photographers group meet weekly and work on projects that allow them to explore the medium of photography to learn skills, develop techniques and express themselves through the lens based media. The projects that the group will work on will be decided by them and will work towards an exhibition of their work. Those that take part in the group will also be given the opportunity to complete their bronze or silver Arts Award.

Is a volunteer just a volunteer?

An exhibition of documentation and stories put together by the volunteers at the Creative Youth Network. From being a volunteer youth worker, to creative workshop assistant, find out why they volunteer and what they’re getting out of it.

Young Bristol exhibition8th - 29th March

A creative showcase highlighting the work from the young creatives engaging in Young Bristol’s services and in partnership with Ambition, UK Youth and CYN’s outreach programme.

Young Bristol’s Creative Programme has been implemented through its network of youth clubs, focusing on 13 - 19 year olds with the aim of raising their aspirations and achievements while supporting young people to become peer mentors and Young Arts Leaders of the future.

A body of intriguing work from the photography students from our Urban Arts Space programme, which shows an insight into the people and places of Bristol as well as exploratory work showing images of interest and learnt techniques.

Jess is a student at Bristol School of Art and this is her first solo show in Bristol.

“I am drawn towards the concept of identity; the work is driven towards exploring personal experiences, almost exclusively so I’m interested in documenting my reality and seeing how this exists in parallel with other individuals. Travel and environment have always been important elements of my work.”

Every Monday, 2.30 - 5pm (NEWS Career session 2 - 4pm)

Come down to the Chill Sessions at The Station where we can offer you the very best in urban arts experiences. In addition there are dedicated youth workers here to support and develop your interests alongside NEWS Career advice specialists to help you write your CV, apply for jobs and prepare for interviews. The Chill is also an opportunity to link up with the Creative Careers support worker to help you with your Arts Award. Whatever your interests we’ll support you in getting started!

Teenage Parents Project

Every Monday, 12 – 2pm

Would you like to meet new people? Why not come along to our free drop-in session, have a chat and join our activities which include arts and crafts, self defence, discussions, or just chill out. Courses are also run including first aid and live and kicking. Crèche facilities are available for children aged 0 – 4 with a small cost of 50p per hour per child.

LGBTQ support groupEvery Monday, 5 - 6.30pm

A new group for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans and young people questioning their sexuality aged 12-14. Straight-identified young people are also welcome if supporting an LGBTQ friend.

STN Sports Hub Ages

Every Thursday, 6 – 8.30pm

No need to be sporty, but an interest to get active.

Try your hand at dodge ball, tag rugby or get advice from a personal trainer. The STN Sports Hub is a drop in session so you can come for the whole two and a half hours or for as long as you can.

For regular attendees we’ve got great giveaways and an opportunity to go on a free sporting trip.

The Listening Partnership invite speakers to talk to us about issues of interest and concern. We work on projects, including making a DVD and pieces of art work. Accessible transport for members attending meetings is provided if required.

The Basement Studios run the record studios and practice rooms at The Station, which are available to use. They also run evening youth clubs where you can come in and hang out, and should you wish to, get involved in some music from DJ’ing to radio, music production to playing the drums. Wednesday nights is urban nights.

The Big Chill on Fridays is a session which has grown from nothing into one of the most attended sessions at The Station. We have exciting weekly projects and activities as well as the chance to come and socialise with other amazing young people. The reason for our rapid growth and great attendance is because what we deliver is driven by your ideas! From the food we provide to the projects, activities and games we run…it all comes from you! So if you have a passion for something and want the chance to make it happen, come down to The Chill on Fridays!

The Station Drivers need you!

Ages 12 - 19

Meetings will take place on the first Monday of every month from 5 – 6.30pm.

The Station Drivers youth group is changing from being a youth led projects group to a committee made up of young people that want to inform and lead on what happens at The Station… and we’re looking for new members!

The committee will meet monthly to discuss activity at The Station from what to programme to how young people can be more involved in decisions made. All travel expenses will be paid to get to the meetings and refreshments will be provided.

Being on a youth committee will not only look fantastic on your CV and applications, but will give you a voice and chance to shape what happens for young people in the city centre.

YMCA Café: The KitchenOpen 9am - 5pm, Monday to Saturdays

The Kitchen café at The Station is open to all and serves some delicious food and drinks. They also offer voluntary opportunities and apprenticeships for young people interested in hospitality and catering. For more information contact café manager Ben Silvey on [email protected]

Brook Sexual Health Clinic

Drop in clinic open Monday - Friday 12 - 7pm & Saturdays 12 - 5pm.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME AT THE STATIONCreative Youth Network has a dedicated staff member who delivers projects in the community and at The Station with the vision to slowly introduce young people to its services and creative opportunities. We want to shout about what we can offer young people and outreach is how we do that!

We can provide creative programmes for schools, organisations and communities working with young people.

FEBRUARY HALF TERMOver the February half term Creative Youth Network will be running a series of Urban Arts Space+ workshops for those that are interested in joining the courses from April. URBAN ARTS SPACE is open to anyone aged 13 to 19yrs. It’s a chance to get involved in theatre, graffiti, live music and music production. Learn to use state of the art equipment and facilities under the guidance of expert tutors, artists and assistants. Express yourself and make something new.

Urban Arts Space - Youth Theatre

Every Monday excl half term, 6:30-8:30pm from 13th January

No experience necessary

Work with industry professionals in a group setting to explore and develop your youth theatre skills. You will also gain experience presenting your work as part of an end of term showcase at the Kingswood Estate. We will offer you support in training, work placements and/or employment. Throughout the term you will also be given the opportunity to work towards an Arts Award that provides creative exploration, CV opportunities and points towards UCAS.

Develop your song writing skills, rehearse with other musicians and bands, start your journey into the music industry. Each session is run by professional musicians and tutors. Equipment and rehearsal space provided.

Urban Arts Space Showcase

Please come and show your support for our young creatives. This will be an evening to showcase the work of our up-and-coming artists and musicians. They have been working over 10 weeks to complete their final pieces in theatre, music and graffiti. It is a great opportunity to spot that raw talent and a chance for Bristol’s young ones to reveal their passion.

ARTS FOR LIFE: Creative CareersCourses every month starting on 28th January 2014

No experience necessary

Fancy yourself as the next Banksy, Devlin or even Beyonce? Want to pursue a career in the creative industries and even make money from your art? If you are not working or not in college then Creative Careers could be the pathway for you. It is a short course which uses creativity such as spoken word, film and art to develop employability skills and knowledge to support you into the creative industry of your choice. Specialist sessions and work placements are included alongside continuing information, advice and guidance to support young people into progression.

You will be supported to complete your Bronze and Silver Arts Award which is a recognised qualification in the creative industries and can go on your CV and towards UCAS points.

You will have access to all of the equipment needed and lunch and travel expenses are provided.

The course is funded by The Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund and is FREE for 16-24 year olds who are not in education, employment or training.

ARTS FOR LIFE: Future4Me Ongoing

No experience necessary

Working in partnership with 1625 Independent People, Creative Youth Network are offering Arts Mentoring with our professional artists to young people who are either leaving the care system or leaving custody.

Young people will be supported by creative industry professionals in a mentoring role enhancing their skills and offering progression opportunities.

You will have access to all of the equipment needed.

This is a FREE service for 16-25 year olds who are leaving looked after care or leaving custody.

ARTS FOR LIFE: Stepping UpJune 2014 - October 2014

No experience necessary

CYN is part of a consortium with The Bridge Foundation, Empire Boxing Academy, Bristol Drugs Project and HAWKS. The project supports schools to identify a cohort of students that may struggle with the transition into secondary school. CYN deliver a programme of creative arts sessions to a group of students before they leave junior school and as they enter into secondary school.

Young people will work in groups to develop an artistic piece alongside a professional tutor.

This programme is funded by The Big Lottery’s Realising Ambition.

A brand new programme supporting young entrepreneurs to develop creative business skills and make some money.

Did you know that 99% of business ideas fail… because they don’t even start! Come and learn the skills and crafts to fine tune your idea and turn peanuts into pennies.

Professionals in clothing design and graffiti will support you to produce your product. We are a Bristol Youth Links funded project which aims to offer a safe, friendly, fun environment to come along and meet friends, listen to music, play sport, learn new skills in cooking, making music, the arts and take part in discussions.

We are passionate about offering opportunities to young people from East Bristol and everything we do from arts, music and sport has a pathway to accreditation, further participation and excellence.

The youth hub is also a Sport England doorstep sport club site and we offer pathways for young people to take part in sports participation and volunteering. Projects that we have run so far include: basketball with Bristol Storm and Bristol Academy Flyers; table tennis with Bristol City Community Trust; multi-sport with Streetgames; and cricket with Gloucestershire Cricket Club Streetchance.
