@CYCLONESB HEADLINES 1. The Iowa State softball team closed its 2020 campaign with a record of 11-13 overall. The season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Following a ruling by the NCAA that allowed softball student-athletes an additional year of eligibility due to the season’s cancellation, seniors Sami Williams and Logan Schaben both announced they would return in 2021. 3. Iowa State had the youngest pitching staff in the nation in 2020, and pitching coach Kate Sinnott has done a masterful job with her bullpen. All 158.1 innings of work in the circle this season were handled by the freshman trio of Karlie Charles, Janessa Jasso and Ellie Spelhaug. The group had a combined ERA of 3.18, and allow opponents to hit just .270. Iowa State had not had a staff ERA lower than 3.25 since 2009. 4. Williams ends the 2020 season as the NCAA’s active leader in career doubles, and is already the Big 12’s all-time doubles leader with 64. She is also just 10 hits behind the NCAA’s active hits leader (Amber Bishop, Liberty - 260). 5. The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif. has already secured spots in the program’s top-10 for career doubles (64 - No. 1), at-bats (660 - No. 4), home runs (46 - No. 1), RBI (126 - No. 6), runs scored (148 - No. 2) and stolen bases (35 - No. 8). Her .379 career batting average would rank No. 2 on Iowa State’s career list. 6. Newcomer Janessa Jasso touted a 4-2 record while leading the team with 34 strikeouts on the year in 42.1 innings of work. The native of Dos Palos, Calif., collected her fourth win of the season at Georgia Tech, 4-3. 7. The Cyclones are 2-0 in their last two games vs. top-10 opponents (5-10-19 vs. No. 8 Texas / 2-22-20 vs. No. 8 Michigan). Prior to this stretch, Iowa State had not bested a top-10 team since March 9, 2013. 8. Karlie Charles boasted a team-leading ERA of 2.57 and was steady in the circle during her freshman campaign. Charles boasted 33 strikeouts to just 10 walks and her control has been on display, as she’s registered just one wild pitch on the year - the lowest on the staff. 9. Williams made school history on Feb. 22 vs. No. 22 South Carolina. The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif. blasted two home runs on the weekend, the second of which broke Iowa State’s all-time home run record of 42, previously held by Cyclone great Tori Torrescano (2010-13). 10. Following the season, seven Cyclones were named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 teams. Hannah Carter, Bryn Hanrahan, Logan Schaben, Sarah Tyree and Sami Williams earned first team honors, while Mikayla Ramos and Kasey Simpson were named to the second team. College: Tulsa, Class of ‘97Twitter: @CoachPinkerton Jamie Pinkerton was named the ninth head coach in Iowa State Softball history on August 2, 2017. His three seasons coaching the Cyclone program have left no doubt that he is the right man for the job. Pinkerton’s knack for building winning programs has been evident, as he’s coached Iowa State to eye-catching offensive numbers and achieved the best RPI finish in program history.

In 2019, Pinkerton led one of the greatest seasons in program history. His Cyclone squad won 37 games, the second-winningest season in program history, and appeared in a national postseason tournament for the first time since 1988. Iowa State was No. 48 in the final RPI rankings, the highest RPI finish in program history.

The 2019 Cyclones not only won, they were fun to watch. Iowa State set a new single-season school record with 48 home runs, breaking the previous mark of 45 set in Pinkerton’s first season at the ISU helm. Led by All-American Sami Williams, Iowa State advanced to the NISC Finals in Fort Collins, Colo., claiming an NISC Regional Championship crown along the way. ISU’s fifth-place finish in the Big 12 is tied for its best final conference standing since 1993. The Cyclones also finished with a winning record for the first time since 1995.

The season was highlighted by one of the best victories on program history, as Iowa State defeated No. 8 Texas in the opening game of the 2019 Big 12 Championship, notching its first win over a top-10 team since March 9, 2013 (vs. No. 8 Oregon). It was the first postseason win over a top-10 team program history.

Perhaps no individual player better encapsulates Pinkerton’s coaching abilities than Cyclone standout Sami Williams. Under Pinkerton’s watchful eye, Williams was named an Honorable Mention All-American by Softball America following an outstanding junior campaign, becoming the first Cyclone softball player since Jenny Condon in 1989 to earn All-America honors. Williams finished the 2019 campaign as the NCAA DI doubles leader with 25 on the season. She set Iowa State single-season records for hits (82), doubles (25), home runs (17) and runs scored (59) during her historic 2019 campaign. Williams is also already the Big 12’s all-time doubles leader with 59.

Under Pinkerton’s tutelage, the 2018 Cyclones hit a school-record 45 home runs, shattering the previous mark of 40 set in 2013 during Pinkerton’s first stint in Ames as an assistant coach. He was also masterful in late-game situations during his first season at the program’s helm, as Iowa State went 6-0 in extra-inning games in 2018, and also went 9-3 in games decided by one run. The Cyclones clinched a Big 12 postseason bid for the second-consecutive year, finishing sixth in the conference to punch their ticket to the 2018 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City.

Pinkerton, whose program-building prowess was well documented throughout his career, was a head coach at Tulsa, Arkansas and Montana prior to taking the reigns at Iowa State.

Pinkerton was already familiar with the Cyclones before arriving in Ames in 2017, having served as assistant coach for four years (2009-13). In his first stint at ISU, Pinkerton was instrumental in developing a strong offense. The 2013 Cyclones set schools records for runs (284), home runs (40), RBI (253) and walks (166).

Pinkerton left Iowa State after the 2013 season to start a softball program at the University of Montana. For a year, he built a roster from scratch, hired coaches, ordered equipment, assembled a schedule, served a key role in building a facility and laid the groundwork for a Division I program.

The Griz’ softball program had an immediate impact when it began play in the Big Sky Conference and raised its win total all three years. His last team was 35-24 (15-6 in the league), won the Big Sky Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Pinkerton was named Big Sky Coach of the Year twice in his three seasons at Montana. His players earned all-conference honors 19 times on the field and 13 times in the classroom over three seasons.

Pinkerton got his opportunity at Arkansas after a highly successful tenure at Tulsa. After three seasons as an assistant with the Golden Hurricane, he was promoted to head coach in 2001. Tulsa registered two 40-win seasons (48-16 in 2002 and 45-18 in 2004) and he was named conference coach-of-the-year both years. The 2002 season was the first winning campaign in program history.

Jamie earned his history degree from Tulsa in 1997. He and his wife, Dori, have a daughter Sarah, who graduated from Iowa State in mechanical engineering and a son, Dane.

• The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif. has already secured spots in the program’s top-10 for career doubles (64 - No. 1), at-bats (660 - No. 4), home runs (46 - No. 1), RBI (126 - No. 6), runs scored (148 - No. 2) and stolen bases (35 - No. 8). Her .379 career batting average would rank No. 2 on Iowa State’s career list. YOUTH MOVEMENT

• Iowa State had the youngest pitching staff in the nation in 2020, and pitching coach Kate Sinnott has done a masterful job with her bullpen.

• Half of Iowa State’s rostered softball players (10-of-20) in 2020 were freshmen - the Cyclones signed eight true freshmen out of high school and added Sarah Tyree to the class after redshirting, in addition to transfer pitcher Ellie Spelhaug.

• Iowa State’s entire bullpen is made up of underclassmen. Sophomore Shannon Mortimer is the most experienced of the bunch. She’s joined by a trio of freshmen in Karlie Charles, Janessa Jasso and Ellie Spelhaug.

• Jasso touted a 4-2 record while leading the team with 31 strikeouts on the year in 37.1 innings of work. The native of Dos Palos, Calif., collected her fourth win of the season at Georgia Tech, 4-3.

• Karlie Charles boasts a team-leading ERA of 2.57 and has been steady in the circle during her freshman campaign. Charles boasts 33 strikeouts to just 10 walks and her control has been on display, as she’s registered just one wild pitch on the year - the lowest on the staff.

• Ellie Spelhaug is leading Iowa State’s pitching staff in opponent batting average (.245) in 56.0 innings of action. She picked up her third career win in Iowa State’s 5-1 triumph over No. 8 Michigan - and also collected a go-ahead 2-RBI base hit in the top of the seventh inning. The freshman has also been Iowa

IOWA STATE SOFTBALL • Season In Review

State’s go-to in relief situations, already tallying two saves on the year.

• Ellie Spelhaug transferred to Iowa State after playing one season of collegiate basketball at Bradley. Spelhaug, who initially chose to play basketball after high school, transferred to Iowa State in part for the chance to once agian be teammates with sister Carli Spelhaug, a freshman infielder for the Cyclones.

• The Cyclone pitching staff was one of the highlights of the season-opening Paradise Classic for Iowa State. The trio of Karlie Charles, Janessa Jasso and Ellie Spelhaug - all freshmen - tallied a cumulative 2.00 ERA and .192 batting average.

PROGRAM HISTORY IN PINKERTON ERA• In 2019, Iowa State advanced to its first national

postseason tournament since 1988, when the Cyclones went to NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Nebraska.

• Iowa State concluded its 2019 campaign with a record of 37-25 overall (7-11 Big 12) and as runners-up in the National Invitational Softball Championship, falling 4-3 to Loyola Marymount in the tournament finals. It was program’s winningest season since 1982, and tied for the second-winningest season of all-time.

• The Cyclones have set the single-season home run record in both of head coach Jamie Pinkerton’s first two seasons. The Cyclones hit 45 home runs in 2018 and 48 in 2019. The record was 40 prior to Pinkerton’s arrival in Ames.

• The Cyclones are 2-0 in their last two games vs. top-10 opponents (5-10-19 vs. No. 8 Texas / 2-22-20 vs. No. 8 Michigan). Iowa State had not previously bested a top-10 team since March 9, 2013.

• Prior to 2019, Iowa State had never swept multiple three-game series vs “Power 5” opponents in the same season. The 2019 Cyclones had three such three-game sweeps (Georgia Tech, Baylor, Kansas).

• The Cyclones’ sweep of the Lady Bears in Waco in 2019 was the first three-game road conference series sweep in program history.

• Iowa State is No. 48 in the final RPI rankings, released by the NCAA. It is the highest RPI finish in program history. The Cyclones were ranked No. 44 on April 8, 2019, which was the highest weekly RPI ranking ever achieved by Iowa State.

• The Cyclones crossed the 30-win barrier for the first time since 1989, when the program went 33-17-1. ISU has also secured its first over .500 since 1995 (22-21-1).
