My background A very brief history

Est.1882

Page 3: Cyclone presentation 2012

Biggest concern at the outset

The distractions the iPad offers the students and how we would discipline or manage this

My students are always on task.

Management of my classes

Physical set up of desks

The future

What I'd like my classroom to look like

Page 6: Cyclone presentation 2012

Slow to start: digital natives?

Research from US, UK, OZ, NZ shows students are not digital natives

Screenagers but only with FB and gaming

Page 7: Cyclone presentation 2012

No longer the sage on the stage

Truly have a differentiated classroom

Plan well ahead: facilitator

Need a LMS like Ultranet

Not HW but prep before your lesson

Never underestimate 'the human touch'

Flipped classroom

Page 8: Cyclone presentation 2012

Definition of flipped approach

The popular definition that it is only when students prep for lessons using short videos is flawed

That every lesson needs to be run this way is also flawed. Variety is important

Changing preconceived ideas in students' minds is part of the mix

Students take ownership of their learning

Basics to flipping my classPost all work on line on a LMS

Download the work at school

Set short bursts of work for students to prep

Start the lesson at the point of least understanding

Don't expect the change to occur overnight

Find novel ways of checking if the prep was done

What about conventional exams?

Essay structure on Educreations

Prep before the test

Page 12: Cyclone presentation 2012

Need very little teacher help

Prepping was successful

Hand writing is not a forgotten skill!!

Page 13: Cyclone presentation 2012

Need another look

Page 14: Cyclone presentation 2012

Need additional input

Working with six students rather than entire class

Success with prep

Differentiated teaching and learning
