We certainly have had a great start to the year and who canbelieve that it’s already November, we’ve set the clocks back

an hour and in 6 weeks’ time, we will bebreaking for the Christmas Holidays. Ourstudents continue to be participating ingreat things both inside the school andoutside in the community, we are so proudof each and every one of them, they aretruly amazing students! As noted in an earlier communication,Cameron Crossing does not do formalscheduled Parent Teacher Interviews. Inlieu of these, we are more than happy tomeet with you to discuss the progress ofyour child throughout the yearupon your request. Please contact us viaemail or simply contacting the school.

Students have continued to work hard.

Most students successfully completed their

their next core subject. Some are working

on Language Arts while others have chosen

Math or Social Studies. Physical Education

Cameron Crossing staff are excited to start introducing mindfulness into the school starting in November and we are going to call it Mindful Moments.

What is mindfulness anyways?Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment without judgments or expectations.Being a teenager or young adult can be stressful, and mindfulness can be a powerful tool to help cope with the stresses of everyday life such as; school, work, home, family, and relationships. These stresses mean the students are constantly living in crisis mode, and when you are surviving you can't thrive.

Mindfulness can be practiced ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, doing absolutely ANYTHING. Some of the benefits offered by practicing mindfulness are:

• It helps their ability to focus and pay attention, which can help with school pressure

• It teaches them to deal with life situations in a less emotionally reactive way

• It teaches effective strategies for making better choices

• It helps to increase their kindness and compassion for themselves and others

• It teaches them skills for self-care• It teaches inner resilience and how to regain

control, which aids self-regulation• It can reduce the anxiety of trying to ‘fit in’• It improves sleep and the immune system

Mindful Moments

Our experienced staff are going to implement these Mindful Moments into the school in various ways and will provide the students with tools and resources to grow their individual mindfulness practices.

In October, six of our studentshad the opportunity to attendthe YouthSMART Summit inCalgary put on by the Canadian

Mental Health Association. This event was attendedby several hundred Jr. High and Sr. High studentsfrom Calgary and area. The summit was designed toengage youth in combating mental health issuesthey see within their school. Our students brainstormed and came up withwonderful ideas to help foster a better sense ofbelonging and inclusion at Cameron Crossing. Someof the ideas presented by our students included;setting up a social committee, hosting fun monthlyevents, setting aside time for peer partneringduring academics, and playing two-person boardgames to provide an opportunity to get to knowtheir classmates better. We are very proud of thesestudents for stepping forward to participate, andfor how well they represented Cameron Crossing atthis event! Stephanie Laborge-Family School Liaison Counselor
