This course teaches you the skillsyou need to ride safely on roadsand make trips by bike. BikeabilityScotland is the modern form ofcycle proficiency, with a focus onon-road training and makingjourneys by bicycle.
Bikeability Scotland level 1 isoften delivered to school pupils inprimary five and teaches the basicskills you need to ride a bike, suchas balance, control and makingturns. Level 1 takes place in atraffic free environment.
Bikeability Scotland level 2 ismainly delivered to school pupilsin primary six, and teaches youhow to ride a bike safely on the road and deal with basicjunctions. Level 2 takes place on quiet roads.
Bikeability Scotland level 3 ismainly delivered to school pupilsin primary seven or during earlysecondary school, and teachesyou how to deal with morechallenging junctions and planand make journeys effectively.Level 3 takes place on roads,using a route risk assessed by a qualified Cycle Trainer.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
No matter what your skill level you can take part in BikeabilityScotland training.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Each level of Bikeability Scotlandnormally consists of between sixand eight sessions of roughly 60minutes each.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will need a bicycle in workingorder, and clothes appropriate for the weather. You are alsoencouraged to wear a correctlyfitted helmet.

Bikeability Scotland training andresources are free for schoolchildren.

The Cycle Commuter course isdesigned to give you the skills and confidence to tackle everydayroad conditions. You may neverforget how to ride a bike, but werecognise that you can forget tofeel confident when cycling on the roads.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
• check a bike is safe to use;
• plan a journey;
• make an independentjourney;
• make minor adjustmentsand carry out simpleroadside repairs.
The course is designed to give youpractical experience, and is mainlydelivered outdoors. Recognisingthat everyone will have differentlevels of ability we use experiencedtutors who can tailor the course toyour individual needs.

You don’t need any specific skillsother than the desire to be moreconfident on your bicycle.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
The course lasts eight hours and is made up of four modules,each two hours long. This allows us to deliver the course flexibly.Normally, the course will bedelivered from your place of work.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will need a bicycle in workingorder and clothing appropriate forthe weather.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The course costs £400 for a groupof up to eight individuals. There isfunding available for organisationsregistered with the Cycle FriendlyEmployer Award. If you are on an open course the cost is £75.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Once you have completed the Commuter Course you will have thenecessary skills and abilities tocommute bybicycle withconfidence.

Go Mountain Bike is designed togive you the confidence to maketrips into the outdoors by bike.
WE’VE SPLIT THIS COURSE INTO FOUR THEMES:
• riding skills;
• first aid;
• being independent and self-supporting;
• sharing the outdoors.
Within these four themes thereare five levels of ability. GoMountain Bike allows you to mixand match the themes and levelsdepending on your interests.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
If you would like to take part youshould have the basic skills neededto ride a bike. To really make themost of Go Mountain Bike youshould gain the skills at each levelbefore progressing on to the next.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Go Mountain Bike lasts as long asyou would like to keep progressing.Taster sessions can be as short asone hour.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Costs for each session are set byyour local Go Mountain Bike centre.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Go Mountain Bike will make you abetter mountain biker, giving youthe skills and knowledge necessaryto cycle off-road.

This course can be designed to suityour specific needs and usuallycovers both on-road and off-roadriding skills. Bike set up, trailsiderepairs, navigation, clothing,equipment as well as health andsafety issues can all be covered onthe course.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
You do not need any specific skillsor qualifications but it is helpful tohave the basic knowledge requiredto ride a bike.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
This is a two day course and theusual class size is between six andeight.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You should have access to abicycle in working order, clothingappropriate for the weather, andany accessories that you use aspart of your patrol.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The cost of this course is £150 perperson or £800 for a group of upto eight.
WHAT’S NEXT?
After completing this course youwill be confident in using your bikeas part of your everyday patrolduties.
These led rides are likely to be aimedat adult groups returning to cycling,who want to become more active orare looking to see more of the cycleroutes in their local area.
Our Cycle Ride Leader course is idealfor new leaders at Let’s Ride centres.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
You don’t need any specific skills orqualifications to take part in a CycleRide Leader course. You should be aconfident cyclist, as you will beleading others.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
This is a one day course.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will need a bicycle in workingorder, clothing appropriate for theweather, and must be 18 or over.
Cycle Ride Leaders are not qualified to carry out risk assessments on newroutes. You may need the help of anorganisation or qualified Cycle Trainerto develop new routes
It is recommended that as a CycleRide Leader you have a valid first-aidcertificate and insurance. If yourorganisation does not haveappropriate insurance in place, youcould consider the insurance offeredthrough membership bodies like theCTC or British Cycling.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The course costs £400 for a group ofup to eight. For anyone on an opencourse the cost is £75.
WHAT’S NEXT?
You will be able to confidently lead agroup of cyclists on easy to moderaterides and will have a range of ridessuited to your each of your groups.
This course supports you and yourorganisations to deliver our ‘Let’s Ride’accredited group rides.
You may wish to continue developingas a leader by following one of therecognised pathways such as theMountain Bike Leaders Award (MBLA)managed by Scottish Cycling.

Cycle Patrol Cycle Ride Leader
This two day course is for anyone who uses a bicycle toenhance their current patrol duties e.g. Park Rangers,Police Officers, Scottish Ambulance Service, CommunityWardens, Fire and Safety Officers.
This course gives you the skills necessary to lead groups on short rides (one to twohours) along previously identified riskassessed routes.

WHO’S IT FOR?ANYONE LOOKING TO HELP INSTRUCT CHILDREN
Cycle Training Assistant
Cycle Training Assistants help deliver BikeabilityScotland training levels 1 and 2 to school aged pupils.
Normally as a Cycle TrainingAssistant you will work under the supervision of a Cycle Traineror local authority coordinatorwhile you gain experience. By completing the course you can go on to plan and deliver cycle training sessions using ourBikeability Scotland resources.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
To become a Cycle TrainingAssistant you should ideally be a competent cyclist and must be a minimum of 16 years old or 18where working independently.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
This is a one day course.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will need a road worthy bicycleand clothing appropriate for theweather.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Cycle Training Assistant courses are usually available free of chargeif you are committed to deliveringBikeability Scotland to schoolpupils.
For other groups, the course cost is £400 for a group of eight, or £75 per person.
WHAT’S NEXT?
As a Cycle Training Assistant you will be able to help deliverBikeability Scotland training levels 1 and 2.
You may eventually want to deliver Bikeability Scotland level 3,at which point you can progressonto the Cycle Trainercourse.

This course is for you if you wantto be able to deliver all three levelsof Bikeability Scotland. As a CycleTrainer you can develop, plan,prepare and deliver learningsessions to anyone that wants tolearn to cycle.
WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED?
You should be fully competent on a bicycle, and have experience ofriding on busy roads. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
This is a four day course, with allsessions normally delivered withina month.
If you already hold a Trail CycleLeader award can access a shortertwo day version of this course. Thiscourse is called “TCL 2 CT”, andtakes account of your previouslearning.
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will need a road worthybicycle and clothing appropriatefor the weather.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The course costs £300 per personor £1,500 for a group of up toeight.
The TCL 2 CT course costs £150per person, or £800 for a group of up to eight.
WHO’S IT FOR?ANYONE LOOKING TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR
Cycle Trainer
Cycle Trainers are able to deliver all threelevels of the National Standard for cycletraining.
WHAT’S NEXT?
This course allows you to confidentlydeliver all three levels of the NationalStandard for cycle training(including Bikeability Scotland).
As a Cycle Trainer you may also actas a Cycle Ride Leader at a Let’sRide Centre.
After completing this course you can access Continued ProfessionalDevelopment opportunities likeCycle Trainer Plus, which gives you the ability to train up others asCycle Training Assistants and deliverCycle Commuter courses.
It is recommended that as a CycleTrainer you hold a valid first aidcertificate and insurance, such asthat provided by membershiporganisations like the CTC andBritish Cycling.

Cycling Scotland TutorCycling Scotland Tutors are some of the most skilled and
experienced cycle trainers in Scotland. All of our tutors have
qualifications in leadership and a background in training
delivery. On top of this, all of our Tutors have taken part in
nationally aligned tutor training and are only recognized as
accredited Cycling Scotland Tutors after completing a period
of supported course delivery.
Cycling Scotland periodically recruit and train new Tutors toensure that we have capacity to deliver our range of training courses.
