Introduction
Cyclists
South Moraviawelcome in
Take your bike, or start by unfolding your road map, and set off for rides across South
Moravia. It is worth doing. Within one single day you can admire fertile fields and
vineyards in the lowlands, and in next to no time you can enjoy a ride through forests
resembling those in a mountain range. You can pedal your bike in the centre of a town
and in a moment you can pass along silent woody landscapes or rivers.
Take, e.g., the Lednice-Valtice area or the battlefield of Austerlitz where you embrace
history, and on the same day you can be confronted with the pulsating present in the
Brno Exhibition Centre. In the Moravian Karst you can take a deep plunge in the mystic
world of underground caves and submersible streams. A few hours later you can admire
South Moravia high above the ground from the gallery of some of the numerous outlook-
towers. There are many attractive spots in this region that you can reach without any par-
ticularly fast vehicle – a bicycle will do.
South Moravia is a true gem for cycling tourists. In order to facilitate their excursions,
the real world of South Moravia has been complemented with yet another world,
launched in autumn 2007, and namely a virtual one. That information guide for bicycle
touring through South Moravia is only a modest review of information; all available data
can be accessed via internet: "Cycling portal of the Southern Moravia Region"

This guide is part of an implemented project that has been co-financed within
Measure 1.3, Tourist travel and offer of leisure activities – Program of Initiatives if the
Community INTERREG IIIA Austria – Czech Republic, under the title "Cycling Tourism
Portal of the South Moravian Region linked with Lower Austria ".
This project runs under the auspices of Mr. Milan Venclík, 1st deputy of the
Governor of the South Moravian Region.
Notes to track descriptions in the brochure:– place at the track– place close to the track– dangerous length, risky spot
Difficulty classification:■ Easy trail Asphalt or other smooth surfaces prevail. The profile is flat (or down the slope) or with rather small ups and downs. Even an untrainedperson and a child under 10 can cope.
■ Trail of medium difficulty The surface varies. In some instances the gradient may be considerable. Recommended for partially trained persons and more maturechildren.
■ Difficult trail The surface varies. The profile has considerable gradients in the up-direction. The down-slopes require low speed considering the sur-face. Recommendable only to trained persons, in general not suitable for children.
Landscape classification along the trail:Highly attractive ÎÎÎThe landscape along the track is rich in natural elements (forests, rocks, water streams) or the man-made elements match the landscape, some artificial and some canalised streams, parks, architectural monuments…). The landscape along the trail is diversified. Close to itnational and international monuments accessible for the public, monuments of technology and important sites for the natural sciences(natural reservations, natural monuments, memorable trees etc.). The prevailing share of the trail is separated from automobile traffic.
Medium attractive ÎÎMan-made elements (woods, agricultural lands, canalised streams, settlements) that partly match the landscape and partly not prevailalong the trail. Certain sections are rather monotonous, certain sections are manysided. Close to the trail memorable places of region-al importance are accessible for the public, technical monuments and valuable natural sites (natural reservations, natural memorableplaces and memorable trees) can be found along the trail. In some instances the track is separated from automobile traffic, in othersboth are combined.
Less attractive ÎMan-made elements (woods, agricultural lands, canalised streams, settlements) that partly match the landscape and partly not are seento prevail along the trail. The landscape along the trail tends to be rather monotonous. There are few memorable places, technical mon-uments and natural sites (natural reservations, memorable sites and trees) along the way. In some instances the track is separated fromautomobile traffic, but mostly both are combined. Certain hurdles can occur discouraging the bikers from using the track, such as verydense automobile traffic, long impassable sections, necessity to carry the bikes.

The track in Brno leads predominantly over agreeable cycling paths orsmaller streets, further along the right bank of the Brno dam lake overa lively street of the 2nd class. From Veverská Bitýška to Tišnov mostly overroads of 3rd class. Roads with low traffic and frequent ups and downsbetween Tišnov and Doubravník (through Lomnice). Dense car traffic atthe 2nd class road in the section Doubravník – Nedvědice. This is a favouredtrack among the Brno cycling fans, as the starting way for excursions intothe surrounding of the Brno dam lake and further to the Czech-Moravianhighlands. Dangerous spots: All crossings of lively streets in Brno, especially Vídeňská and at Anthropos, public lighting poles standing in theline of the path between Brno-Komín and Brno-Bystrc, further denselyfrequented road of the 2nd class in Čebín, and the section Doubravník –Nedvědice with heavy car traffic. Families with children are recommendedto favour unmarked roads at the left bank of the river in Brno Jundrov, thesame applies to the bypass of the Brno dam lake, even for the price ofovercoming the rather "breakneck" section at Zouvalka opposite theVeveří castle.
Physical difficulty: The track is medium diffi-cult, some places in the vicinity of Lomnice aredifficult. The passage through Brno betweenthe centre and the Brno dam lake is easy.Attractiveness of landscape: Mostly medi-um attractive, very attractive sections are bet-ween Lomnice and Doubravník and at thePernštějn castle.Road number marking

The trail leads mostly over 3rd class roads, special purpose asphalt roadsor newly built cycling tracks, at the Austrian border also over a former sig-nal way. Especially the section between Brno and the shopping centreOlympia is favoured for cycling and in-line skating. Its benefits reside in itslevel profile and relative safety for families with children. It is also popularamong distant bike riders as a connection between Brno and Pálava andthe Lednice-Valtice area, Novomlýnské artificial lakes, or between Brnoand Vienna. Its disadvantage is the lack of accompanying green; it is notrecommendable during really hot days.
Physical difficulty: The track is easy.Attractiveness of landscape: Mostly medi-um attractive, some less attractive sections.Road number marking

Lanžhot: see Route 43. Lanžhot, border check pointMikulčice, Valy: national cultural monument. One of the most outstanding set-tlement sites of the Great Moravian Empire with documented slavonic inhabitantssince the 6th century. The main findings from the 9th century. Steel boats of 36 m and 1,2 m draught werepulled at first by horses and later by a tractor. That is why a dam was built along thewhole artificial branch facilitating the movement of animals or machines. In 1945the channel was destroyed by the retreating German army, after the war in 1947the operation was renewed for a short time but then terminated allegedly due topoor economy. After 1989 it has been gradually refurbished so as to be navigablefor excursions and sporting motor boats.
