Travellers are expected to use the designated campsites If you are not able to reach the next campsite hikers and cyclists are permitted to put up a normal hiking tent for one night anywhere along the road track path except on cultivated land too close to residential buildings and in especially protected areas Ask the owner for permission before camping on farmland or private ground Always take care to leave all stones moss grass and trees intact and in their natural places and take all garbage with you For details see httpwwwustiseinstaklingarfrettirfrett20160630May-I-camp-anywhere-

This rule also applies to motorized travellers using a normal hiking tent but be considerate to nature and inhabitants Never drive or park vehicles off-road

Camper vans and caravans always have to use designated campsites

In nature reserves camping is permitted only on designated campsites In a few nature reserves hikers and cyclists may camp elsewhere after obtaining a special permit from the park wardens Environment Agency of Iceland (see weblink above) In South Iceland (Hvalnes east of Houmlfn ndash Herdiacutesarviacutek west of THORNorlaacutekshoumlfn) even tents may not be put up outside designated campsites except in uninhabited areas several km away from houses and cultivated areas
