    Our menu is for an all-day childcare facility located in San Francisco, California,

    for grade school children, ages four to ten. Our philosophy is that healthy habits are

    formed in childhood and we strive to give our clients the nutritional foundation they need

    to lead a healthy life. We believe the good nutrition of growing children is key to their

    development and we focus on providing balanced meals filled with a variety of nutritious

    choices. The children at our facility are generally healthy kids, without any special

    dietary needs. Our menu aims to show children that healthy meals can be both fun and

    delicious. We will offer clearly marked vegetarian options at every meal. This helps

    distinguish us from many other daycare facilities and helps meet the demand of

    vegetarian families within the city seeking childcare that reflects their lifestyle. Most of

    our menu is filled with local food, supporting the surrounding community we live in.

    Special care is taken during meal preparation to keep nut and nut-free options

    separate. Due to widespread nut allergies, which can be severe in children, foods with

    nuts are clearly labeled on the menu. All of the meals are included in the cost of

    childcare, which means price will not play a roll in childrens actual menu selections.

    Many parents in the San Francisco area put high priority on feeding their children well

    and are willing to pay more for more nutritionally adequate and balanced meals.

    However, so as not to overburden parents with high food costs, menus strive to limit cost

    and maximize nutrition.

    Our menu is designed to meet the specific dietary needs of children and cater to

    their preferences. Daily calcium requirements for this age group are high (800 mg), so

    low-fat milk is offered to drink, any time of day. The caloric needs of growing children

    ages four to ten range from 1200 to 1800 per day, depending on age and gender, so

    portions on our menu are appropriately sized for children. Our daily selections highlight

    lean protein, whole grains and various fruits and vegetables to encourage children to eat a

    variety of foods. Entre and side offerings strive to be nutrient dense and attractive to

    children. For example, Confetti Quinoa offers a protein-rich whole grain with vitamin-

    packed bell peppers, corn and herbs. While a child may not make their meal choices

    around nutritional value, they may be attracted to the name or the appearance of the dish.

    Our selections also take into consideration common childhood favorites and add a twist.

    For example, our Worlds Best PB&J elevates the classic sandwich with a waffle iron

    presentation. We ensure kid-approved dishes call for ingredients offering the best nutrient

    intake for the calories. Our Spaghetti with Turkey Meatballs dish, for instance, calls for

    lean turkey meat and whole grain noodles thereby providing higher nutritional quality

    than the more traditional beef meatballs and refined wheat noodles.

    Our food is also fun. We put a priority on offering whimsical options to attract

    children to try new foods. Dishes like Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal, Peas of a Different Pod or

    Rainbow Chopped Salad engage a childs imagination and curiosity to try something

    new. To be sure our menu is offering every child a healthful option, daily offerings

    include a selection of raw, steamed or roasted vegetables served with little else. A childs

    palate can be very particular, and too many new flavors may not always be a welcome

    experience.

    Cafeteria style service allows kids the best opportunity to see attractive,

    colorful dishes and to be intrigued to try new options. This style also fully engages all of

    their senses in the selection process, giving them ownership over the food selections. The

    name of the dish is clearly shown directly above the display so children are able to

    associate the name with the food. When we plan our menu, we aim to give children a few

    comfort foods or well-known options and to also introduce them to new foods. Special

    care is taken to make sure a variety of food is offered daily and nutritional needs are met.

    Next, the dish is assessed for its durability in a cafeteria style of service. For example,

    can the dish withstand extended heat from warmers? Or, will the dish still look appealing

    after sitting out on a cold bar for one hour? Dishes are then garnished in the serving trays

    to add an extra pop of color and add appeal.

    Our daycare foodservice provides San Francisco parents a place where their

    children are exposed to wholesome and thoughtful meals. Our mission is to build a

    childs healthful habits at a young age. Our menu reflects this commitment by engaging

    their senses and their curiosity, all while respecting the unique preferences a child may

    have.
