A medical device with a wireless card could connect to a smart phone carried by a doctor or clinician and that smart phone could act as a bridge connecting the medical device to the internet. This could lead to a payload getting depositing onto the medical device interfering with the data that it collects. That payload could be Malware or the patient data could be uploaded to the Internet. This would bypass normal network security filtering and scanning.
