CWSF 2015 - Fredericton, New Brunswick Nikhil Patil Beta Cells' Ability to Secrete Insulin under Glucotoxic Conditions Challenge: Category: Region: City: School: Abstract: Health Intermediate Waterloo-Wellington Waterloo, ON Waterloo Collegiate Institute Despite obesity being correlated with diabetes, there is yet to be conclusive evidence regarding what links the two together. Beta cells' ability to secrete insulin was diminished after exposure to hyperglycemic conditions. Glucotoxic states are likely to be induced in obese patients who are developing type 2 diabetes. It was found that glucose toxicity could be a significant factor connecting obesity with type 2 diabetes. Youth Science Canada PO Box 297 Pickering ON L1V 2R4 www.youthscience.ca / [email protected] 416-341-0040 Biography My name is Nikhil Patil and I am a grade 10 student attending Waterloo Collegiate Institute. I have participated in science fair twice previously (grades 7 and 8), reaching CWSF both times and winning a bronze and silver medal. I play rep soccer for Waterloo as well as participate in many school extracurricular activities (debate, science club and orchestra). I have always had a passion for science and biology in particular, however I was unable to conduct cellular experimentation. I would like to pursue a career in the medical field. I was drawn towards research relating to type 2 diabetes after becoming aware of some shocking statistics indicating the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes at a young age. I believe that increased knowledge is the first step towards the development of an effective treatment or cure. My research aimed to determine a potential linking factor between obesity and type 2 diabetes. I would like to continue research on glucose toxicity along with extending my project to include experimentation in a clinical setting. My advice to anyone participating in science fair is to manage their time well, as even simple tasks can take a significant amount of time.

Kimia Raahemifar, Rishika GedaBinaural Beats: Bio-feedback Via Brainwave Entrainment

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

DiscoveryIntermediateWaterloo-WellingtonWaterloo, ONWaterloo Collegiate InstituteThis project explored immediate influences of binaural beat stimulation onbrain bioelectrical signals and mood. Thirty participants were exposed tobeta frequencies with a difference of f=30 Hz. EEG data showed that theentrainment increased the participants' awareness rates immediately afterexposure to binaural beats?an effect that persisted even after the stimulushad been removed, opening numerous pathways for innovation based onthis research.

Arjun PandeyDeterminants of the Accuracy of Blood Pressure Measurement: ANovel Strategy

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

DiscoveryIntermediateWaterloo-WellingtonWaterloo, ONWaterloo Collegiate InstituteMy project aims to develop a more effective strategy for blood pressure(BP) measurement to reduce the risk of erroneous readings and conditionslike White Coat Hypertension. Specifically, I tested the impact of the type ofindividual measuring BP, their attire, and the location of BP measurementon the accuracy of readings and the incidence of Isolated Clinic and WhiteCoat Hypertension in 106 volunteers.

BiographyMy name is Arjun Pandey. I am a grade 10Extended French student at WaterlooCollegiate Institute, in Waterloo Ontario. Forthe past few years, I have been researchingcardiovascular diseases including PulmonaryHypertension, Nocturnal Blood PressurePatterns and, most recently, White CoatHypertension, a condition where individualshave high blood pressure in doctors' officesbut normal blood pressure while going abouttheir daily activities. I came up with the ideafor my project during a visit to the dentist. Inoticed I felt more anxious around the dentistrather than the dental hygienist and thoughtabout how this might affect my bloodpressure. From there my research hasexpanded to a large clinical trial with over 106participants. My past research has beenpublished in the Canadian Journal ofCardiology, the British Journal of GeneralPractice, the Journal for Student Science andTechnology, and the Canadian YoungScientist Journal and was featured in thePulmonary Hypertension Association ofCanada's magazine "Connections," andCTV's Canada AM. I presented my researchwith a Highlighted & Moderated Poster andOral presentation at the CanadianCardiovascular Congress, and with two posterpresentations at the American HeartAssociation's Lifestyle and Epidemiol...

Devanshi ShuklaEvaluating antimicrobial plant-derived compounds

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

InnovationSeniorWaterloo-WellingtonGuelph, ONCentennial Collegiate & Vocational InstituteObserving the inhibition of bacterial communication in V. fischeri, seen asdecreased luminescence, provides a new method to screen for effectiveantimicrobial plant-derived compounds. Various compounds in Holy Basilwere isolated using HPLC, and screened for their effectiveness. The samewas done for its essential oils, but without contact. Interestingly, the volatilecompounds are more effective antimicrobials than the compounds whichwere isolated.

BiographyI remember learning about antibiotic resistantbacteria in biology class, and how big of aproblem it is in the world of medicine. At thesame time, more and more Natural HealthProducts are being discovered as potentialinhibitors of these supernatural bacteria. Buthow do we know what's the best product? Iwanted to find out a way to easily screenvarious plant-derived compounds in order tolimit down to the most effective one! For thefuture - I would like to research further tomake a product that can be used forsterilization, easily limiting contaminationthrough the use of volatile oils. For otherstudents - think about the fact that the world'sbiggest problems can be solved by itssmallest things. I absolutely love science(favorite class at school!) and doing researchwhich is what I want to do when I'm older.

John FishGPS Footprint: A Modern Approach to Emissions

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

InnovationIntermediateWaterloo-WellingtonWaterloo, ONSir John A. Macdonald S.S.Carbon dioxide is the most radiative forcing greenhouse gas, and iscommonly released through transportation. To measure thesetransportation carbon dioxide emissions, a phone application was createdthat combines GPS data with the fuel economy of multiple methods oftransportation. Accurate data presented in a meaningful manner should actas an incentive to lower a person's carbon dioxide emissions.

BiographyMy name is John Fish, and I'm a 15 year oldstudent in grade 10 from Waterloo, Ontario. Amajor passion of mine is running, and myprimary race distances are 400m and 800m. Iwon a provincial track gold medal twice and abronze medal three times. Another majorpassion of mine, which led to my science fairproject, is programming. I've released fiveapps on the Blackberry World and GooglePlay store, one of which is called "GPSFootprint" and is the basis for my science fairproject. A talk with my brother about usingcomputer science to help the environmentprovided the inspiration to create thisapp/project. I want to pursue this field in thefuture, and be able to combine STEM withenvironmental issues. At my regional fair Iwon a gold medal as well as best in divisionfor earth and environmental science.
