CW PRICE REPORT COMMENTARY S harp drops in crude oil and natural gas prices led petrochemical prices lower last week, but trading was reported to be snbdued in North America du e to the holiday, market sonrces say. Wes t Texas Interme diate erode oil slumped $6,96/bbl, to $62.93/bbl, while Brent crude slipped $8.36/bbl. to $61.72/hbl. Natural gas on the Henry Hub Index deflated 40 cts/ million Btu to $3.30/miHion Btu. North American feedstock prices contin- ued to decline off of lower crude oil prices. NAPHTHA lost about 6 cts/gal. ETHANE slipped 4 cts/gal, PROPANE fell 13 cts/gal and BUTANE dropped about 9 cts/gal. The U.S. spot oleflns market was mixed, a s E T HY L E NE lo s t 2 cts/lb. PROPYLENE remained stable, and B UT ADI E NE g a i n e d nearly 1 6 cts/lb due to supply constric- tions and rising input costs, sources say. June ethylene contracts settled up 3 ets/lb, to 33.5 cts/lb, Producers have nominated price increases of 4 cts-6 cts/lb fo r July con- tracts, but it is likely that they will only be able to implement a partial increase, mar- ket sources say. Meanwhile, July butadiene contracts settled np 14 cts/lb. to 45 cts/lb. The settlement represents producers' needs market players say. Spot naphtha in northwest Europe declined $25/m.t.. a smaller decrease than primary hydrocarbons, olefins buyers say. Lower spot oleflns prices are expected in the com ing weeks, and buyers have held o f f purchases, sources say. Spot prices were flat in the wake o f July contract settlements the week before. Aromatics were more active, but not by mach, traders say. U.S. Gulf Coast activ- ity was all but non-existent, however, spot TOLUENE dropped a dime. There was more business condncted in Europe, but trading was lackluster as trading ranges expand- ing, sources say. Spot BENZENE declined an average o f $35/m.t. while spot toluene slid about $65/m.t. MIXED XYLENE S lost $20/ni.t., while spot STYRENE rose about $30/m.t. and its July contract price settled higher by €90/m.t.
