CVTC was started in 1910 as an epileptic colony and soon began serving individuals with developmental disabilities. By the 1950s, more than 3,000 people lived at CVTC, making it the largest such facility in the country.

Our History

Page 4: CVTC is the first and largest of the five training centers in Virginia.

280 persons are currently served in the ICF/MR.

Only deficiency cited in May 2011 survey was for “pony walls” on Building 9-since abandoned for renovation

ICF/MR is the level of care of the other four training centers in the state.

Persons served have many facets of their disability but are healthy enough to be involved in “active treatment” and are involved in learning activities leading to growth and development of more independence in activities of daily living.

With Intellectual Disability (ICF/MR)

Nursing/Skilled Nursing Facility

84 people are currently served in the NF/SNF.

5 Star rating for four consecutive years.

Persons have more serious medical conditions than those living in the ICF/MR component.

“Active treatment” requirements are not the same as for ICF/MR and emphasis is on activities rather than learning.

Regional Community Support Center

The Regional Community Support Center (RCSC) provides specialized, out-patient health and behavioral services not readily available in the community, including dentistry, primary care, psychiatry, pediatric neurology and behavioral consultation.

Individuals requiring services are referred to the RCSC by their Community Services Case Manager.

The services are provided by both CVTC staff and independent health care practitioners who have contracted to work with the RCSC.
