Summary of CV

This section describes briefly a summary of your career in science, academic and research; themain scientific and technological achievements and goals in your line of research in the medium-and long- term. It also includes other important aspects or peculiarities.

I am an enthusiastic researcher with 7 years experience in breast imaging. After participatingin 5 national and international research projects and showing technology transfer skills,I currently hold a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University ofGirona (UdG) with a budget of 160.000€. I participate in the Spanish project SMARTERandI actively apply for funding: NIH, HHMI.

I undertook my PhD studies at the University of Surrey (UK), where I developed a greatinterest in investigating methods to improve early breast cancer detection by means ofimage processing. As part of the UK project OPTIMAM, I proposed a method to estimatescattered radiation in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), after understanding the underlyingphysics from Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Now, as a MC expert, I provide detailed analysisof X-ray systems to members of project OPTIMAM 2 and other European researchgroups (The Dutch reference centre for screening). As a result, I have co-authored severalpublications in international conferences and Q1 journals.

Later I was employed at the University of Surrey as a postdoctoral fellow within the UK project' Solid-state Breast CT with X-ray colour imaging'. I developed an image simulation tool togenerate synthetic breast CT images, demonstrating the feasibility of using a novel imagingdetector in breast CT scanners (IEEE MIC 2013).

My experience and skills brought the attention of the UdG, which I joined as postdoctoralresearcher within the EU project ASSURE in 2014. I developed a software tool for lesionsegmentation algorithm in 3D ultrasound, which was presented at the European Congress ofRadiology 2016 and clinically tested by MeVis Medical Solutions. In addition, I proposed anautomatic quantification of breast dense tissue enhancement in magnetic resonance (underreview). My participation in ASSURE let me work with top EU researchers in breast imaging(Prof Nico Karssemeijer, Prof Sir Michael Brady), and more importantly, learn new radiation-free breast imaging technologies, which complemented my previous knowledge in x-ray breastimaging.

Then my career path and strong interest in breast imaging were rewarded after winning ahighly-competitive individual Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship which allowed me 2 yearsof contract at UdG with a budget of 160.000€. As co-PI of this H2020 project ( SCARtool), Icollaborate with radiologists from Hospital Parc Taulí to improve lesion detection performancein DBT. This fellowship has helped me to improve my training as researcher by attendingto 4 international courses, as well as to meet worldwide researchers to establish future

research collaborations. One of such successful meetings finished with a technology transferagreement with an x-ray imaging detector manufacturer (PerkinElmer) to reduce scatteredradiation in grid-less mammography and supervise an EngD student.

I am also part of the research team of the Spanish project SMARTER, where I superviseone PhD student. My experience in the field has been recognised in the breast imagingcommunity as reviewer of several Q1 journals, international conferences and invitations toPhD evaluation panels and talks. Furthermore, I am involved in scientific disseminationactivities (e.g. www.somoscientificos.es, European Researcher's Night, Campus Jóven deInvestigación UdG, etc) as well as organising local events: International Day of Radiology2016.

Oliver Díaz has been researching full time in the breast imaging field, since he started his PhDin 2009. In his 7 years research experience (4 predoc + 3 postdoc), he has published 6 journalpapers and presented his research in 20 international conferences and workshops,including an invited talk in the IEEE Black Sea Conference. Below, the main indicators tomeasure his scientific research quality are shown:
