Forty students took advantage of getting to work, which is a 42% increase from 2018. The second release

Page 8: CVCC Board of Education February 28, 2019

started February 19 for students with a B average and 11 or less absences. In February an additional nine students headed off to work reflecting a 36% increase since 2018. Currently CVCC’s highest paid student is receiving an hourly wage of $13.25 an hour and the average wage received is $10.56 versus the state of Ohio current minimum wage of $8.55. CVCC skills have allowed our students to earn 24% more than the typical starting wage. We thank our employers for giving our students this opportunity, to name a few: Bob Evans, Case Western Reserve University, Danbury Senior Living, Ganley Chrysler Dodge, GPD Group, Hyson Metal Forming Solutions, Nook Industries, Regina Health Center, ROE Dental Lab, and Swagelok. CVCC wishes our student workers the best of luck as they start their careers, add critical job knowledge to their classroom and lab training, and fill vital roles in our region’s work force! STEM Career Showcase On Saturday, February 9, CVCC hosted a STEM Career Showcase for students in grades 7-12 and their parents. Students also had the opportunity to take a variety of online assessments to help identify their skills and interests. Through two presentation sessions, parents and students gained a better understanding as to why STEM skills are important and “Why Employers Are Seeking STEM Skills.” The STEM Career Showcase is developed and executed by CVCC Community Liaisons Marie Elias and Darden Blake. CVCC Career Specialists play vital roles in the event through their marketing efforts in their districts, along with participation during the showcase! Some of the objectives the LPN students met from this enrichment experience was to utilize Maslow’s hierarchy to identify the priority physical, psychological, social developmental and educational needs of the student, as well as apply principles of pediatrics, growth and development, nutrition and other classroom content to assist in achieving and maintaining optimal health and development. The LPN students used “teachable moments” to instruct the Hotels and Resorts students and positively reinforce good health behaviors. They also facilitated participation in psychosocial and educational activities at an increasingly independent level, and recognized the meaning of a special needs classroom. What an educational and beneficial collaboration between CVCC’s Adult Education LPN students and High School Hotels and Resorts students!
