Our first #CVATexpo in January 2013 was a huge success – with over 97% of the 120 people attending saying that they found it valuable and learnt new skills to help run their group.

Our 2014 Expo will be bigger and better – with a great programme of speakers and workshops, it is a fantastic way to ‘kick off’ your week (it’s on a Monday!) and your year. If you can only make time to attend one event in 2014, make it this one!

About our keynote speaker – Kevin Curley, CBE

We are delighted that Kevin Curley, CBE, is able to join us as our keynote speaker for #CVATexpo2014. Kevin has extensive experience in the charitable sector, and was Chief Executive of the National Association of Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA) for nearly 10 years until retiring in February 2012. NAVCA champions and strengthens voluntary and community action by supporting its members (including CVAT) in their work with over 160,000 local charities and community groups.

His previous experience also includes leading a number of infrastructure organisations, overseas development work with VSO, and as the Chief Executive of Headway, the UK health charity for people with head injuries. Kevin was a member of the Treasury independent challenge group for the spending review 2010, and has also been a member of both the Treasury third sector review group and the Cabinet Office public services

steering group. He is a trustee of NCVYS, Charity Finance Group, Community Action Derby, The People’s Operator Foundation and is a member of NCVO’s Advisory Council.

Kevin was appointed CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2012 for services to the voluntary and community sector and he writes a regular opinion column for Third Sector magazine.

Kevin now describes himself as a voluntary sector adviser. When he stepped down from NAVCA, he told civilsociety.co.uk: “I’m not going to stop working for the local voluntary sector, I’m simply going to stop running an organisation.” His keynote address will look at what the future might hold for the sector. It is bound to be a good listen!

CostWe recognise that funding remains a challenge for many voluntary and community groups. We are therefore delighted that we can continue to run this event FREE for the majority of voluntary and community groups operating in Tameside. We are only able to do this having been able to secure external sponsorship for this event.

Due to venue size, places are limited to two per group, and priority will be given to Tameside voluntary or community organisations. If you work in another sector, or don’t operate in Tameside, or are a voluntary organisation with an income over £1m, the cost is £70 per person.

SponsorsWe are extremely grateful to a number of our suppliers and local businesses for helping to support this event financially:

Social media/getting your message across(Workshop slots 1 and 3 - 10.45am and 3.00pm)

“Tweet me”, “Like my page”, “Hashtag”, “Thunder clap”... do you have any idea what all this means? What is your theory of change?(Workshop slot 1 - 10.45am)

Proving the difference your group makes to people’s lives is becoming more important to potential funders, supporters and volunteers. This workshop will help you start to get to grips with measuring your organisation’s social value and wider impact. Martin Duffy, who is working on a new CVAT ‘Valuing our communities’ project, has

over seventeen years experience of working in the community and voluntary sector and has been involved in measuring the impact of infrastructure organisations (such as CVAT), Housing Associations and large grant programmes for local strategic partnerships.

10 tips for community fundraising – lessons from Tameside 4 Good(Workshop slot 2 - 1.30pm) Over the last year, Tameside 4 Good has tried and tested lots of difference fundraising methods. We’ll share our pearls of wisdom and inspire you to raise money in new creative ways.

Whistle Stop Tour to Retaining Your Volunteers(Workshop slot 1 - 10.45am) Why do volunteers leave? Taking an honest look at why volunteers leave we will explore simple and effective ways of motivating your volunteers ready to take on 2014! Delivered by Vashti Holland, Volunteer Centre Tameside.

The workshops (continued)

It’s not what you know! Are you making connections for success?(Workshop slot 2 - 1.30pm)

With so many changes to personnel in local agencies, this workshop aims to help you identify the key people in your local neighbourhood who can help raise the profile of your group, and help you identify people who will help you solve problems and develop relationships for the future. Facilitated by Anna Hynes, Health and Social Care officer at CVAT.

Plan B(Workshop slot 2 - 1.30pm)

It’s a changing world – start to put a plan B together in this workshop to help your organisation adapt and make important key decisions about your future direction. The workshop is being led by Dave Packwood, a consultant who has worked within the sector for 25 years and has excellent experience of undertaking organisational reviews and management development. Through exploring real life scenarios relating to the challenges affecting the sector, you will identify responses and develop ideas for your own organisation’s ‘Plan B’.

Make a difference! How can your group develop successful campaigns to influence decisions?(Workshop slot 3 – 3.00pm)

Ben Gilchrist (CVAT Policy & Participation Manager) and Sue Pomfret (Community Organiser for Denton) will help you to identify practical ways to help you change things in your community including giving you tools and examples of what has worked for other groups.

Quality Assurance: Identifying the Jewels in your Crown(Workshop slot 3 – 3.00pm)

After an impish look at the way that many people fail to be excited by the term ‘quality assurance’, Andrew Kay from CANWe Solutions will introduce you to the possibility that reviewing and improving ‘quality’ in your organisation may well be far from the painful process that you might expect it to be – and that the benefits may well be considerable. CANWe Solutions are the business division of the Child Action Northwest (CANW) charity and pride themselves on being a single-source provider of business solutions for Third Sector organisations.

Annual General MeetingsAfter the morning workshops and before lunch we intend to hold the Annual General Meetings for CVAT, Tameside Third Sector Coalition and Volunteer Centre Tameside. These will be short.

BookingYou must book in advance for this event and the workshops you would like to attend — please do not turn up without having booked. Places are limited to two per group/organisation, and will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

You can book online at www.cvat.org.uk/expo2014 or by completing this form, and posting it back to us, by Monday 13 January 2014.
