Personal Summary

Design has been a part of my life that I have strived to achieve and succeed at from my school career to present. I am going into my fourth and final year of studying design for industry.

As a creative individual, I have been lucky enough to investigate several aspects of design through my education and as I begin to explore and develop my skills, my interest and passion for design have broadened.

My strength lies in the ability to communicate my many initial concepts and I follow each and every project with diligence and clarity.

OTHER INTERESTS

Asides from design I am a keen sportsman, and I have learnt a lot as a person. I have been part of an international team in both athletics and hockey, and I have learnt how to work and perform as an individual as well as part of a team. As a past captain in the 1st XI school hockey team and a house leader I have the leadership qualities and organisational skills required for the field of design.

My most recent sporting achievements are being part of the Scotland U18 hockey team that won the European Division II Championships and a member of the U21 Scotland hockey training squad. Sport and design are passions of mine that continue to inspire me both on and off the field.

LEGO DESIGN INTERN

Internship at LEGO System A/S working on the LEGO House design in

Billund, Denmark.

May-August 2014

Here is my Lego experience... 24th April: After a successful skype interview I accepted an internship with Lego and flew out of Edinburgh at the start of May.

As the LEGO House is a completely confidential project I can not show or discuss specific details of the work I undertook over the summer. However I can share with you what I got up to as a Lego design intern.

7th May: The LEGO house is an experience visitor centre currently under construction. It shall hold a range of exhibition spaces, a cafe, shop and an open square accessable to the general public.

Due to the confidentiality of the product I new little more than what is available to the public. So the first few days I familiarised myself with the overall footprint and the exhibition spaces that I would be working on over the summer.

6th May: I arrived in Billund, Denmark home to the Lego group where Ole Kirk Christiansen founded what is now the most profitable toy manufacturer in the world.

Although I was not based in Lego’s main project office I found myself working in some of the office spaces shown here specifically when Lego building and model making,

June: I was present for the opening of the Lego House exhibition and unvailing of the only to scale model on show to the general public. This was the first mile stone in the Lego House journey.

May: I worked on several spaces within the LEGO House specifically sketching and model making several itterations as designs adapted over time.

Ralph Appelbaum Assocciates are the New York award winning architects firm that were chosen to work alongside the Lego House design team on the overall experience and the two company’s collaborate on a regular basis via skype. This was a new working environment for me that required a lot of planning and communication but also meant that the project was being worked on 24/7.

June: Spread across 2 days I took part in user testing which were mock ups of two of the intended experiences that will go on in the Lego House. These inlolved over 50 kids and were split up into hour long sessions. Taking part highlighted the importance of user testing and the insights you can gain and improve on.

Everything is awesome !

August: The first six foundation stones of the Lego House were layed by three generations of the family of Ole Kirk Christiansen. The event marked a major mile stone in the construction of the Lego House.

Having been an experience design intern I have learnt a lot not only as designer but as a person too and I look forward to taking all I have learnt and the insights I have gained into my final year of university and beyond.

PHILIPS DESIGN INTERN

Internship at Philips International B.V. within the department of

Design Innovation/EM of Design inEindhoven, The Netherlands.

May-August 2013

Here is my Philips experience... After standing out in a project internally within the univeristy I was offered an interview for an internship with Philips. The interview was a success and I was offered the placement.

Due to the confidentilaity of the project that I was part of I can not share the work I produced as a design intern. However here are some of the highlights over the 3 1/2 months I spent at Philips.

Living in a different country for the first time I embraced the local culture. This meant quickly adapting to life on a bike!

Asides from a new way of living it was also my first time working for an international company as a designer. The consumer lifestyle department I was part of focuses on creating consumer electronics, domestic appliances and personal care products.

Wed 15th May: I arrived in Eindhoven, the Netherlands which is where Philips was founded and where I would work as part of the consumer lifestyle team.

Although our main focus was our project we were also given opportunities to take part in workshops which included collaborative discussion, sketching workshops and putting presentation material together.

June: I was given a project to work on throughout my internship along with a fellow intern looking into the future of Philips successful BlueTouch back pain relief product that makes use of cutting edge technology. This would be our main focus over the 3 1/2 month period.

Many of the workshops I was part of were not only with Philips employees from Eindhoven and Amsterdam but external designers from other design consultants. The majority of whom I worked with were designers for Gro, a local design consultancy that have a close relationship with Philips. Working with these designers showed a new way of design thinking and a distinct sketching style that I found particularly inspiring.

July: During my time at Philips I took part in a 2 day workshop at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) on flexible electronics. This was an extremely interesting two days where we were exposed to other technical innovations from fellow designers and students. The workshop covered a range of topics from materials and manufacturing to creating a business cas for our ideas. This was a huge eye opener in an ever advancing field and it was great to meet a wide range of people looking at how flexible electronics can be used in our daily lives.

August: At the end of my internship we held a presentation to about 40 members of the Philips team which included colleagues we had worked with on the project but also others who were investigting the area we had looked into. Pitching our idea effectivel was an extremely nerve racking process however the presentation went well and we were later informed that the

Philips team would carry on exploring the project further.

September 2014: A year on from my Philips internship a fellow colleague shared a link to the release of the new BlueTouch and pulse relief app that shares similar features and thought process that we had worked on over the 4 months in Eindhoven.

HOCKEYSHIN GUARD

First year major project. Designing a product that tackles the existing

problems of shin guards in field hockey.

Field hockey is a sport played by many in the UK and worldwide. It’s the same at whatever standard, whether male, female, amateur or professional. Health, safety, hygiene and comfort are essential which means wearing the right protective equipment.

Currently products in the shin protection market have tried to consider, health, safety, hygiene and comfort however the same problems occur to players.

Although the majority of shin guards provide the required protection from external game play they fail to protect the player from the shin guard itself. Many shin guards do not allow the skin to breathe causing sweat which in turn results in skin irritation. Players will often come out in rashes and in worse case scenarios, ecze-ma. Sweat and skin deposits are also left on the guards after use which is not only unhygienic but can make the guards smell and difficult to clean.

The ideal shin guard would be lightweight, compact, durable, flexible

and avoid direct skin contact.

THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

adidas PANGOLIN SHIN GUARD

1. Simply unfasten the straps of the shin guard.

2. Unroll the guard and place over the sock against the shin.

3. Using the smaller strap secure guard around ankle.

4. Roll end of the sock over guard.

5. Using the larger strap, secure middle of guard to individuals’ preference.

6. Repeat steps with other shin guard. After use simply reverse the process.

THE SOLUTION

Rather than using conventional plastic and foam, the adidas PANGOLIN shin guard is made of D3O, a specifically engineered material. On contact, the molecules of the material lock together which absorbs and distributes the force over a larger area, thereby reducing the effect of impact.

Players run around in hockey so they are bound to sweat. The adidas PANGOLIN shin guard is designed to be placed over the sock, avoiding direct skin contact. This means sweat is no longer trapped and the skin can breathe naturally. This is much healthier for the skin.

As the shin guard is placed over the sock the product would be part of the adicolour range. This would allow the guards to be customised and be specific to individual teams and clubs.
